‘Two and a Half Buck Chuck” WTF? Trader Joe’s Announces 25% Price Hike

two-buck-chuck-price

The days when you could call Trader Joe’s infamous Charles Shaw wine “Two-Buck Chuck” may have come to an end.

“In general, our retail prices change only when our costs change,” Alison Mochizuki, director of public relations for Trader Joe’s, stated in an email. “We’ve held a $1.99 retail price for 11 years. Quite a bit has happened during those years and the move to $2.49 allows us to offer the same quality that has made the wine famous the world over.”

The company cites increased costs as the cause of the 25 percent price hike, while only California locations are guaranteed to see this immediate change. Of course, going from $1.99 to $2.49 isn’t going to devastate many piggy banks; the main issue seems to be how the new price tag will affect what consumers will now call the wine.

“Inflation Chuck” and “Upchuck” are a few disgruntled responses given to Press Democratwhile another commentator at Grub Street groaned, “Nifty two-fifty Charlie?”

However, Rudy, our Senior NapTaker here at Foodbeast, said it perfectly: “Two and a Half Buck Chuck just doesn’t sound right.”

Agreed.

This Eggplant Has a Face – Why in the WORLD Does This Eggplant Have a Face?!

Tumblr, in its typical simple photographic fashion, has brought us some joy from the behind the scenes at Trader Joe’s. Apparently when eggplants with peculiar growth – like an extra phallic Easter Island statue – arrive at the store, the employees get to have fun in the back adding additional anthropomorphic features and take photos to post online.

This is no miracle like Jesus appearing on toasted bread, given my assumptions about the eyes and mouth being human-aided. But I still hope someone names the eggplant and subsequently eats the entire thing.

In-N-Out Possibly Coming to Denver?

California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas and now… Colorado? That was the talk of the town when Denver City Councilman for District 8, Albus Brooks made a Facebook post about the possibility of the CA-based burger chain making its debut in the Mile High City. Brooks reportedly has ties to the current CFO of In-N-Out and has stated that bringing the fast-food chain to the city of Denver is part of his agenda for 2012.

Along for the ride of possible California chains rumored to be coming to Colorado include Trader Joe’s, the privately held chain of specialty grocery stores with approximately 365 locations. Half of those locations are in California, with the other half spanning across 30 states. How you feelin’ Denver?

Parks and Recreation References Used to Sell Food at Trader Joe’s

Blame the foodies out there for the incredible amount of airplay the characters of NBC’s Parks and Recreation are receiving for their particular in-show food references that have become inescapable memes across the Internet. Maybe it’s our natural tendency to gravitate to anyone who enjoys a hearty meal, or a young Indian comedian who takes huge bites of extremely hot pepper to prove a point in front of his peers.

We’ve seen Ron Swanson get his fair share of foodie love from the show (Ron Swanson Meat Mosaic – All Things Food With Ron Swanson – Ben & Jerry’s Ron Swanson Flavor) along with co-star Aziz Ansari who playes the role of Tom Haverford (Tom Haverford Food Slang – Tom Haverford Eats a Pepper) discuss food quite a bit.

It seems the team at one particular Trader Joe’s market has taken the meme to new heights, using it in their marketing and offering up some humorous suggestions on the price tags starring Ron Swanson and Tom Haverford. While these pictures, which surfaced thanks to Reddit users jmlache and panteradactyl, aren’t indicative of an official co-branding or nation-wide initiative on the part of Trader Joe’s, it is a fun look into one store’s particular sense of humor and pop culture references.
