The Halal Guys Officially Coming to Southern California, Here’s What We Know

UPDATE: Halal Guys also coming to Las Vegas and Bay Areas

The Halal Guys, that famous New York-based food cart that offers gyros, chicken and rice platters drenched in ‘White Sauce’  is officially coming to California.

Specifically, the NYC-based concept has just signed a 50-unit franchise deal to bring the famed cart concept to Southern Cali, apparently a Middle Eastern food desert (South County, lookin’ at you). 5 locations in Los Angeles and Orange County are anticipated to open by the end of 2015.

Industry reports mention that Southern California isn’t the only target for The Halal Guys’ expansion.

More deals have been inked that will likely bring The Halal Guys to locations in Houston, TX, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Philadelphia. The Philippines, Kuala Lumpur, and Malaysia are also official targets.

Here is their franchise growth plan, if all goes accordingly:

  • The Philippines: 20 unit franchise agreement
  • Southern California: 50-unit deal for territories South of San Bernadino and San Luis Obispo
  • Houston, TX: 5-unit development deal
  • Washington, D.C.: 10-unit development deal for the entire city

Hell, if you have a couple million dollars to spare, you too can jump on The Halal Guys’ franchising bandwagon.

Bonus #foodbeast points if you open one in my mouth.

18 Knott’s Berry Farm Eats Worth Throwing Up On a Roller Coaster For

It’s summer, which means between the barbecues and theme parks and county fairs, there’s plenty of gorgeous, over-the-top eats to go around. But only a few of these warm weather meccas go above and beyond in blending old-fashioned fun with binge-worthy grub.

Since it was just a roadside fruit stand in the 1920s, then just a homestyle chicken restaurant in the ’30s, the food at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif. has pretty much been made from scratch — providing a surprisingly deft, handcrafted touch to fare most other places might take for granted.

Whether it’s gargantuan cinnamon rolls, Animal-Style fries, or hearty plate of Knott’s famous fried chicken, it turns out that Snoop’s got all your thrill-fueling needs covered.

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites. Just, try not to eat them all right before riding Ghostrider, mkay?

California MarketPlace

Mrs. Knott’s Fried Chicken Dinner

Hello, deep fried poultry crack. Cooked in the same factory Mrs. Knott’s used way back when, this chicken plate is an excellent way to work yourself right into a food coma. Pro-tip: slather everything, from the buttery biscuits to the chicken itself, in Knott’s speciality boysenberry butter. So worth.

Mrs. Knott’s Full Chicken Dinner: $17.99 @ Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant

Also notable: Chicken Pot Pies ($8.15), Snoopy Cookies ($2.99), and Boysenberry Croissant Donuts ($3.99) @ the Farm Bakery

Fiesta Village

Volcano and Carne Asada Fries

Taking cues from its Southern California locale, Knott’s whipped up its own version of Animal Fries. Like In-N-Out, Knott’s smothers its taters in Thousand Island, grilled onions, and shredded cheese, but if San Diego is more your style, you can also grab Carne Asada fries, which come topped with shredded steak, sour cream, and guac.

Volcano Fries: $7.99
Carne Asada Fries: $8.99 @ Papa Loca

Chicken and Steak Tortas

A nice bit of unfussy Mexican-style food for when you’re craving something a bit more substantial. Choose from either ground chicken or ground steak — both taste great stuffed between garlic mayonnaise, pico de gallo, cheese, lettuce, and fresh teleras bread.

Chicken or Steak Tortas: $9.29 Pancho’s Tacos

Also notable: Horchata, Orange Bang, and Pina Colada: $3.59 @ Pancho’s Tacos

Southwest Burger

A regular chargrilled burger topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, cheese, barbecue sauce, and garlic aioli — no biggie. The real clinchers here are the fried jalapeño chips, which are just tangy enough to offer a little kick, but not nearly spicy enough to impose on unsuspecting tastebuds.

Southwest Burger: $7.99 at Coaster’s

Pop Rocks Dippin’ Dots

Everyone’s favorite astronaut ice cream, but in cherry flavor and mixed with Pop Rocks. We’re not sure why we didn’t think of it first, either.

Pop Rocks Dippin’ Dots: $5.99 @ Dippin’ Dots

Ghost Town

Giant Cinnamon Roll

Holy hell = what you will say when you see this thing, what your tastebuds will say when you eat it, and what your thighs will say once it’s digested and they feel about one Knott’s cinnamon roll wider. Topped with your choice of maple, cream cheese, sugar icing, and nuts, they’re so fluffy you might actually die.

Cinnamon Rolls: $5.59 @ Ghost Town Bakery

A simple treat, upgraded with the help of Knott’s bakery-made chocolate chip cookies.

Cookiewich: $5.99 @ Ghost Town Grub

Funnel Cake Sundae

We’ll say this, don’t get this if you don’t want other funnel cakes ruined for you forever. Compared to Knott’s version which comes topped with real boysenberry and soft serve ice cream, regular syrup and whipped cream will just seem depressing.

Funnel Cake w/Soft Serve: $9.99 @ Ghost Town Grub

Boysenberry, Strawberry, and Cream-Stuffed Churros

Boysenberry, strawberry, and Bavarian cream make up your filling options for these fresh made cinnamon sugar batons. Grab all three to make your own beautiful churro bouquet.

Stuffed Churros: $5.99 @ Churro Factory

Also notable: Churro Sundaes: $5.99 @ Churro Factory

Boysenberry Soft Serve Cone

Bedecked in chunks of real boysenberry (kind of a big deal around these parts, if you couldn’t tell), consider this purple soft serve Knott’s version of pineapple Dole Whip — perfectly creamy and just the thing for 2 in the afternoon.

Boysenberry Soft Serve: $4.99 @ Churro Factory

Old-style root beer. Super-refreshing. Tastes better when you talk like a cowboy.

Sarsaparilla: $3.79 @ Calico Saloon

Ribs, Flank Steak, Turkey Legs, Roasted Corn, etc.

For saucy, open-air barbecue, head to the Fireman’s Brigade in Ghost Town. Ribs and steaks here are slow cooked for a minimum of 24 hours, and everything is served with a variety of barbecue-y sides like baked potatoes, coleslaw, and Knott’s special baked jalapeño buns.

Pork Ribs or Flank Steak Combo: $14.79
Turkey Leg: $9.99
Roasted Corn: $3.99 @ Fireman’s Brigade Barbecue

Deep Fried Cheese on a Stick

Available in cheddar or pepperjack, this hand-battered, deep-fried milk stick absolutely melts in your mouth, leaving you drowning in a sumptuously unhealthy blend of butter and oil and breading. We’re pretty sure this is what a cheese-gasm tastes like.

Cheese on a Stick: $8.29 @ Strictly on a Stick

Also notable: Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs: $8.59 @ Strictly on a Stick

Gold Trail Kettle Chips, Cajun Lime Salt Riblets, Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger, Ribeye Steak Sandwich, and Asian Prawn Salad

Gold Trail Kettle Chips: $10.99
Cajun Lime Salt Riblets: $10.99
Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger: $15.79
Ribeye Steak Sandwich: $21.99
Asian Prawn Salad: $13.99 @ Spurs

38 Pieces of Food-Inspired Clothes and Accessories That Actually Look Dope

Because we had the exciting opportunity to work with The Agenda Show during its couple-day tenure in Southern California, we also had the chance to thumb through racks and racks of apparel and accessories launching throughout 2014. We entered the show optimistically thinking that since food has evolved to become a larger part of the cultural zeitgeist, perhaps, just perhaps, we might find enough food-related clothing to put a writeup together. And that’s when we became a bit overwhelmed with the seemingly insurmountable number of pieces, and even COLLECTIONS from streetwear brands like Beloved, Neff and Sabre. The clothing seemed to shout, FOOD, YOU’RE HERE TO STAY!, and we’re excited to feed this trending fire.

Below, find a photo collection of our favorite pieces from the show itself and even a few brands that came from the extended Agenda network. If you’re in the street/surf apparel industry, make sure to catch Agenda NYC happening this week: January 22-23. And if we missed a brand you personally rep that features food in its new lineups, make sure to drop us a line through our contact form or social handles (@foodbeast).

FYI, these food items were spotted at an industry trade show and may or may not be available presently. To find out more information, make sure to follow up with the individual brands.

Umami Burger Debuts PB&J Ice Cream Sandwich Made with Jelly Donut

Umami Burger is upgrading their dessert line-up with a particularly decadent dessert: Donut Ice Cream Sandwiches. The concoction comes from a collaboration between L.A. Creamery Ice Cream and Stan’s Donuts in Southern California.

The flavor mash-ups include: Peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwiched between a jelly donut; chocolate ganache ice cream sandwiched inside a chocolate peanut butter donut; cinnamon toast ice cream stuffed between a cinnamon roll with chocolate chips. Ok, so the last one technically isn’t a “Donut” Ice Cream Sammie but… at this point the sound of saliva waterfalling out of my mouth is making it hard to concentrate… You were saying?

The new Donut Ice Cream Sandwiches are now available at every Umami location in Southern California and New York for $6 and $8 a pop, respectively.

Tegan and Quinoa: Whole Foods Now Selling Vinyl Records In Store

Why do hipsters do anything? Why do they buy record players when they already have iPhones? Why do they wear t-shirts for books they’ve never read and bands they’ve never even heard of? We could keep asking forever, but we’re also willing to bet if we had that much excess disposable income, we’d probably be just as nauseatingly #cultured too.

Following the footsteps as such other hipster bait retailers as Urban Outfitters and Starbucks, Whole Foods has just rolled out record stores inside five Southern California locations out of the chain’s 340.

“This launch isn’t just about stocking our shelves with something new and different,” Mike Bowen, Whole Foods’ executive coordinator, said in a press release. “— it’s about listening to our shoppers and giving them access to the things they want — whether it’s their favorite cheese or their favorite way to enjoy music.”

According to TIME, the artists available include Frank Sinatra, Daft Punk, the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley and Tegan and Sara, among others – more than half of which, yes, sue us, we ourselves happen to like listening to from time to time. But then again, we work in news, so we’ll just be over here snacking on Taco Bell and listening to KROQ.

Taco Bell Waffle Taco Spotted in Southern Californa

You can only imagine my joy when I learned that a Taco Bell in Southern California was testing a Waffle Taco.

Novelty is key here — Orange County’s foodie scene has been gravitating to the idea of utilizing waffles as a vessel for sandwiches for some time now. Over the past couple years, new restaurants like Bruxie and The Iron Press have been pushing gourmet waffle sandwiches to the locals — panini sandwiches with waffles as the bread.

The trend found its way to the mainstream, with both Dunkin’ Donuts and Jack in the Box releasing their own versions of a waffle sandwich over the past couple years. Now Taco Bell is joining in on the action, testing their tacofied version of the waffle in some select Orange County, CA locations.

Initially reported by Brand Eating, Instagrammer Sarah1ch5 snapped a pic of the Waffle Taco when cruising through a Taco Bell in Southern California. When fellow Instalovers commented, “Why? Just Why?” She promptly responded, “Don’t hate . . . It was awesome!”

Now that’s our kind of gal. We immediately set out to a local Taco Bell that we heard had the item on their breakfast menu. We ended up on the corner of Grand and Warner in Santa Ana, CA, where we spotted the following signage in the drive-thru:

The Waffle Taco is currently listed at 89 cents (items in test phase are commonly offered at a low price) and features a sausage and scrambled egg folded into a waffle. A packet of syrup is properly included.

If you want to give the new breakfast item a try, head on over to 2246 S Grand Ave, Santa Ana, CA 92705 during breakfast hours (7am – 11am) while they still have it.

SPOTTED: Carl’s Jr. Testing a Hand-Scooped Strawberry Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich?

We have just received a lead on a photo emerging from a Carl’s Jr. location out of Newport Beach, CA that apparently is serving a Hand-Scooped Strawberry Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich.

The photo appears to have originated from the location off of Newport Blvd and Industrial Way, for those familiar with the Southern California beach city. Interesting that the stoner-friendly sandwich emerged from Instagram user spec_j on the 4/20, but the sandwich indeed falls inline with the fast food chain’s recent line ice cream cookie sandwiches, following up on both an Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich and a Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich.

Our guess leads us to believe the chain is running a spotted test of this new dessert option. For anyone who spots this sandwich at their local Carl’s Jr. (or Hardee’s) location, feel free to Tweet/Instagram a photo and tag it #foodbeast.

Update: 04/22/2013

A Carl’s Jr. spokesperson has provided us with the following window cling graphic being used in the product’s test markets. As a policy, Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s does not comment on test products. The only information we got was a confirmation that the Strawberry Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich is indeed being tested at limited number of Carl’s Jr. restaurants.
