For One Day, Arby’s Is Paying For Fans To Get FREE Actual Sandwich Tattoos

Photo: Peter Pham

Every brand has its hardcore fans who will go above and beyond to profess their love for the company. This could be in the form of collecting memorabilia, getting the company to help them get married, or even tattooing the logo on them somewhere.

Arby’s is giving those who want it the chance to do the latter of those three on their dime, as for one day only, they’ll cover the charges on your themed tattoo.

The sandwich chain has partnered up with tattoo artist Miguel “Uzi” Montgomery to give Arby’s fans a free tattoo of popular Arby’s menu items — all designed by Montgomery himself.

Below is a flash sheet of tattoo designs guests can choose from.

Photo: Arby’s

The one-day promotion will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Port City Tattoo in Long Beach, CA. From 11am to 8pm, the artists at Port City will be working to ensure that everyone who comes in will get their free Arby’s tattoo, though it will be limited to one tattoo per customer.

Arby’s and Montgomery created the sandwich-inspired designs as a way to give fans a way to express their love of sandwiches. They actually look pretty sweet, too.

Not too long ago, Domino’s Russia had a similar promotion (albeit reversed) where they asked fans to get a tattoo of their logo for the promise of free pizza for life. Unfortunately, they had to cut that campaign short due to the overabundance of folks willing to ink themselves for free pizza.

Still, it seems Arby’s is taking a more straightforward approach to getting their branding on fans. No promise of 100 sandwiches a year for 100 years, just a free (well-designed) tattoo. If you’re in the Long Beach area next Saturday, and want some free ink, pop your head in to Port City Tattoo. Arby’s will also be serving free sandwiches during the event.

The BRICK: Howlin’ Ray’s New Deep Fried Nashville Hot Grilled Cheese

It’s expected to be caught in a three-hour line when you’re visiting Howlin’ Ray’s — the spot that put Nashville hot chicken on the Los Angeles map. If you haven’t already been to the fried chicken hotspot, the never-ending crowd is a clear indicator that this place knows how to do hot chicken proper. Paired with an ambrosial dish like their newest Nashville Hot Grilled Cheese aptly named “The Brick,” Howlin’ Ray’s may have discovered the recipe to double their wait time — and we’re totally fine with that.

Now, when we say it’s a next-level version of grilled cheese, that’s not something to be taken lightly.

Photo: Marc Kharrat | Foodbeast

The Brick first begins as a double sliced grilled cheese sandwich, which is then battered and deep fried until its crunch can be heard from neighboring Little Tokyo. It is then seasoned the exact same way the restaurant’s famous hot chicken is, with patrons able to choose the level of heat they want for their sandwich.

If lactose intolerant folks ever had to pick a moment to pop a Lactaid pill, it’d be for this.

Howlin’ Ray’s also offers a secret-menu variation of their cheese fries, as if all that cheesiness wasn’t enough to entice you. Guests can actually ask the restaurant to load your fries with hearty chunks of Nashville hot chicken, coleslaw, pickles, and a shower of their special “Comeback Sauce.”

Grilled cheese and hot chicken aficionados may want to set an afternoon aside to sink their teeth into The Brick. Regardless of wait times, Howlin’ Ray’s is definitely an experience you don’t want to rush — especially with the debut of that glorious new sandwich. Just make sure to come with clear calendars and empty stomachs. You’ll leave happy, albeit with a well-earned layer of perspiration.

Parents Have Been Lying To Us About Bread Crust For Years, Dietitian Says

Parents, if you ever forced your kids to eat the bread crust on sandwiches because it was “healthy,” now would be a good time to apologize. Turns out you’ve been wrong all these years.

bread crust

A registered dietitian told CNN that the common parental advice is actually a pretty pervasive myth. From a nutritional standpoint, your bread crust is barely different at all from the soft, fluffy interior.

Can any changes occur to the crust? If you brush with eggwash the outer skin of the bread before baking, like with brioche, then the nutrition content may change slightly. Other than that, the only difference between the inside and outside of a bread loaf is the presence of a compound called pronyl-lysine in the crust. It’s an antioxidant that can help fight cancer, but that tends to get cancelled out by the presence of acrylamide, a carcinogen that’s often produced when the brown crust is formed.

So parents, if you really want to get your kids to eat healthier bread, get them whole grain/multi-grain instead, and feel free to cut the crust off. The type of bread matters way more than whether the outer crust is consumed or not.

Reach

Isai

Anytime you see the word “still” on a post involving couples, there’s a good chance they were just in an argument, or have argued about whatever the thesis of the post was. Like, “I might be a handful, but he STILL loves me and I love him.” Or “Even though we’re both busy, we STILL find time for each other.” Even when you’re quoting Kanye, “I don’t care what none of y’all say, I STILL love her,” we know you just had a fight and jumped on social media to help put out the fire with that loving “still” post, and a picture of the two of you kissing on a random previous date night. . . . Anyway, we got super intimate with this Australian Wagyu Ribeye from @bartongla. Definitely one of the top 3 steaks I’ve ever had. 🐂🔥🔥🔥 #foodbeast #bartong #tryitordiet #steak #tomahawk #mediumrare #perfect #truelove #dailyfoodfeed

Which Orange County ‘Wich To Have in Hand This National Sandwich Day

Any ingredient you can imagine, piled between two slices of your favorite bread, a culinary expression of culture, creativity and convenience – who doesn’t enjoy a sandwich?

What better way to celebrate our collective love affair with the world’s tastiest invention — amusingly named after a gambling aristocrat — than dedicating an entire day to them? This year, November 3rd is National Sandwich Day, so let’s get rolling and look at the best Orange County has to offer.

Habana

Costa Mesa and Irvine, CA

Does the thought of scrumptious Latin-inspired food keep you up at night? Luckily, Habana is open past midnight and the “Media Noche” is the perfect bite to satisfy those late nocturnal cravings. This Cuban style pressed sandwich is loaded with slow roasted pork, jamón, Swiss and all the fixings, as well as a tantalizing roasted garlic yellow mustard aioli that makes the whole thing melt in your mouth.

Stockyard Sandwich Co.

4th St Market, Santa Ana, CA

Whoever thought to add tuna salad to the already delicious grilled cheese deserves a medal. The crew at Stockyard Sandwich Co. earns the gold for their take on the classic because the ciabatta and cheddar make it better. Tasty tuna and crisp pickles meld together in a gloriously salty and tangy experience that’s only elevated by tomato and red onion. House-made chips or tater tots are included with the order, so you’ll surely find happiness at this 4th Street Market standout.

The Recess Room

Fountain Valley, CA

At The Recess Room, a trendy energetic vibe meets innovative cuisine. If your interests lie between the bread, the “Pork Belly BLT” has your name written all over it. Thick slabs of succulent, rich and flavorful kurobuta pork set the tone for this ‘wich; the charred edges alone will get your mouth watering. Arugula, tender Roma tomato, and chipotle aioli fill out the rest and beer battered fries come on the side. Just remember, there is never any shame in filling your belly with pork belly.

Pandor Artisan Boulangerie & Cafe

Anaheim, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and Orange, CA

Artisan French bread and aromatic coffee highlight this charming breakfast spot – oui, s’il vous plait! If you dream of sipping espresso while savoring a Croque-Madame along the Champs-Élysées, Pandor Boulangerie and Café can at least get you halfway to realizing your fancy.  Served atop a Provençal loaf, this delicacy of jambon ham, cheese, creamy Béchamel sauce and eggs over easy evokes the finest of Parisian sensibilities.

The Iron Press

Anaheim and Costa Mesa, CA

Please excuse the language, but the “Hot Mother Clucker” is so delicious, profanity is entirely necessary. On this ‘which, you’ll find tender, free-range Jidori chicken coated in a spicy buttermilk batter and stacked amid jalapeño waffles, along with zesty slaw, buffalo sauce, and jalapeño maple syrup. This delectably obscene creation will have you exhaling “&#%$ that is good!” between gulps of water. I would keep the pitcher close by.

The Kroft

Anaheim and Tustin, CA

What’s the coolest thing since sliced bread? Sandwich dipping. At The Kroft, thinly cut prime rib slathered with horseradish mayo and caramelized onions are the passengers on a French roll vessel certified for dunking, especially when it’s into Au Jus dip. With your Prime Rib Dip in hand, throw in some panko fried cheese curds and you’ll be on a voyage of delicious discovery.

Civic

4th St Market, Santa Ana, CA

CIVIC’s house-made pesto is the key that truly unlocks the flavor of its juicy, free-range chicken breast burger. Its basil is garden fresh, the olive oil enhancing the herbs while not being too soggy. They then throw savory sun dried tomatoes, arugula, melted Swiss cheese on a delicate yet crispy bun, proving that you can still get your fill without completely wrecking that healthy streak you’ve been on.

Two Birds

TRADE, Irvine, CA

For the “Bird In The Hand” sandwich, you’re going to need twice the standard gripping action, especially if you order double chicken for $3 (as you should). The massive portion towers on a cornmeal bun, seasoned, crispy poultry dripping with slaw and special tiger sauce. Don’t be intimidated, a fork and knife can make tackling the monster more feasible. Add a side of waffle fries and an Arnold Palmer truly bring the Southern comfort home.

Blackmarket Bakery

Costa Mesa and Santa Ana, CA

When the lunch bell rings, countless kids across the country dig into a timeless classic, the staple of every childhood diet. Blackmarket Bakery will take your fondest peanut butter and jelly sandwich memories to the next level. The Über PBJ is a layered masterpiece of creamy peanut butter, signature berry jam, shaved almonds, and fresh berries slathered on pieces of toasted 6-grain. You’ll never think about a PB&J the same again.

Dog Haus

Santa Ana, CA

What is the meaning of life? Was the dress black and blue or white and gold? Is a hot dog actually a sandwich? These are the questions of our time. Including frankfurters on this list might land me in the doghouse with some, but perhaps spending time at Dog Haus will provide a new perspective regarding this controversial debate. Whatever you decide, you’ll surely leave satisfied by the chain’s signature beef sausage combinations, each served on a fresh King’s Hawaiian Rolls. The popular “SOOO CALI” is garnished with wild arugula, spicy basil aioli, crispy onions, avocado, tomato, but you also have the option to craft your own.

The Little Jewel Of New Orleans

Chinatown, Los Angeles, CA

Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, this outpost of authentic Southern cooking truly is a treasure. Each of their Po’boys is rich in bayou flavor; choices liked golden fried catfish, oyster, and shrimp come with mayo and all the fixings. Ask for a ‘crown’ on your sandwich, a topping of melted sharp cheddar and hand-smoked honey bacon, you’ll be glad you did.

Hollingshead Delicatessen

Orange, CA

At Hollingshead Delicatessen, family owned and operated since 1963, every Hero (sandwich) has its Demon (sandwich). On the path to righteousness, you will encounter beef, ham, turkey, cheddar, mayo, mustard, lettuce, and tomato heaped on a French Roll. Luckily, giving into the dark side only means swapping for pastrami, Swiss, and an onion roll – well, and maybe partaking in the diverse beer section that features 22 different brews on tap every day.

Tortas Sinaloa

Santa Ana, CA

The fact that Mexican cooking, predominately embodied by the tortilla, has developed its own type of sandwich is a testament to the universal appeal. At Tortas Sinaloa, there are 60 different combinations to choose from, but the Torta Ahogada, a carnitas sandwich drenched in chili tomato sauce, lime juice and red onion is the best. Add some avocado and queso, and don’t forget to indulge in some of the liquid refreshments like tamarind or horchata.

The Carving Board

West Los Angeles, CA

When pasta ends up on a sandwich, it is a match made in carb heaven, and the meatball sandwich at The Carving Board is your ticket to those exquisite, pearly gates. Sliced all beef meatballs covered in a homemade marinara and melted mozzarella are served between Parmesan spaghetti bread (yes, it’s exactly what you think it is). Extra marinara on the side makes this pièce de résistance all the right kinds of saucy.

This Duck Confit Torta Recipe Video Is The Sexiest Thing You’ll See All Day

While duck confit may already be considered a delicacy on its own, Tabañero Hot Sauce and FOODBEAST decided that creating a duck confit torta recipe would be the next best thing.

For some background, duck confit is one of the fanciest dishes to come out France. By cooking the duck legs in duck fat for several hours, duck confit is known to be remarkably delicious.

duck confit torta

FOODBEAST and Tabañero decided to elevate the succulence of this duck confit torta even more by searing the duck on a skillet before serving. The torta is then topped with a creamy, yet spicy Tabañero mayo, shredded romaine hearts, and sliced avocado.

While this dish may seem a little advanced for some at-home cooks, Tabañero and FOODBEAST have you covered every step of the way. It’s only appropriate the Tabasutra position for this kitchen adventure is “The Virgin.”

Ingredients:

For the duck confit

4 duck legs

1 12 oz jar of duck fat

olive oil

1/4 c brown sugar

3oz Tabañero Sweet & Spicy

1 tbsp dried oregano

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tbsp dried cumin powder

1 tbsp dried coriander

For the accompaniment

1 Bolillo Roll or Torta Bun

1/4 c chopped cilantro

1/2 quick pickled red onion (1/2 cup sliced red onion, 1/2 cup red wine vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/2 cup warm water, soak for 30 min.)

1 c shredded romaine heart

1 avocado, sliced

½ tbsp Tabañero

1 tbsp mayonnaise

Step 1

In a roasting pan or stock pot, pour duck fat over your duck legs. If needed, add olive oil until the legs are covered. On the stove, bring fat up to a simmer and cover with foil. Put into preheated 350 degree oven and cook until duck is tender, approximately 2-3hrs. When tenderness is achieved, chill duck in the fat till fully cooled.

Step 2

Remove legs from fat and shred meat into a mixing bowl. Discard bones and reserve duck fat in separate container. Season with all the ingredients for the duck confit and incorporate well.

Step 3

In a skillet, sear duck until crispy with the reserved duck fat and season to taste. Mix mayo and Tabañero in a small bowl.

Step 4

Toast torta buns and then spread mayo on top. Place the seared duck on buns and build torta with pickled onions, avocado, shredded romaine and cilantro. Serve!
