This Ice Cream Is Literally A Whole Thanksgiving Dinner

Salt and Straw Ice Cream has spent the better part of the last decade shocking folks with its unique flavor combinations such as Pear and Blue Cheese, and Arbequina Olive Oil.

Fans of the shop have come to expect anything, and its Thanksgiving flavors deliver above and beyond those expectations.

This November, Salt and Straw has been scooping a Thanksgiving celebration with special flavors consisting of Sweet Potato Caserole with Maple Pecans, Roasted Peach and Sage Cornbread Stuffing, Blood Orange Cranberry Sauce, Spiced Goat Cheese Pumpkin Pie, and even a Salted Caramel Turkey.

Co-founder Tyler Malek explained on the Foodbeast Katchup podcast, the importance of creating new flavor combinations and how they release new ones as often as every month.

“What we do now, is the first Friday of every month, we launch a new menu,” Malek said. “We treat it almost like a Broadway show. There’s literally years-worth of build up for that menu, and it happens every month.”

While the Thanksgiving pints are unfortunately sold out online, you can still run over to any of Salt and Straw’s 20 locations, Wednesday for a last minute try.

Salt & Straw Launch Turkey and Stuffing Ice Cream For Thaksgiving

An entire Thanksgiving dinner in ice cream form sounds preposterous, but Salt & Straw, the popular west coast scoop shop known for their wildly uncommon flavors, is making it a reality this November.

We’re not just talking sweet cranberry or pumpkin flavors, which would still kind of make sense, as the ice cream shop is adding savory flavors, too.

The full lineup of flavors include all the sides you can think of, like Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecans, a vegan Roasted Cranberry Sauce Sorbet, Spiced Goat Cheese & Pumpkin Pie, and Roasted Peach & Sage Cornbread Stuffing.

Of course, a Thanksgiving feast would be incomplete without a turkey, so the main course is remixed as a Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey, made with a buttery turkey brittle, and turkey fat caramel.

The fall flavors will be available at all west coast scoop shops in Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Anaheim. If you don’t feel like getting up, there’s always the Postmates option, as well.

Ice Cream Shop Is Serving Blood And Insect Ice Cream Pints Because Halloween

West coast ice cream phenom Salt & Straw has gained national acclaim for its unique yet coveted flavors. For the Halloween season, their creative team is pushing the limits as to what can go in ice cream yet again, as they’re incorporating blood pudding and insects into the frozen treat.

As part of their “Spooktacular Series” for October, Salt & Straw will be making a couple of different flavors that are sure to turn some heads and stomachs. One of those is the “Dracula’s Blood Pudding,” based off of the Italian treat known as sanguinaccio dolce. In this case, pig’s blood from Portland’s Nicky’s USA is mixed into a spiced ice cream to make the creamy dessert.

The other buzzworthy creation (no pun intended) is called “Creepy Crawly Critters,” and is a collab between the ice cream wizards and Don Bugito, a Bay Area bug treats maker. Their chocolate-covered crickets and mealworms make an appearance in this treat, both of which are incorporated into a matcha ice cream. Salt & Straw has made a coconut almond toffee brittle with the mealworms that can also be added to any of their ice creams in the company’s scoop shops.

While the two flavors may sound on the more bizarre end, Salt & Straw is known for taking unconventional ingredients and making delicious ice cream flavors. Given that the traditional blood pudding and chocolate crickets are on the sweet side already, they should pair well with the frozen custard — once you can get past the mental barrier of eating bugs or blood, that is.

Salt & Straw is launching these flavors in their scoop shops and in pints starting October 5th, and they’ll be available through the end of October. If you’re not on the West Coast, though, you’ll still be able to order them online, as nationwide shipping of the pints will be available.

Entire Thanksgiving Dinner As Ice Cream Will Satisfy The Kid In All Of Us

Our childhood dreams of having dessert for dinner has come true, thanks to the culinary magicians at Salt & Straw.

From November 1-22, you can experience a full Thanksgiving dinner in the form of decadent ice cream at Salt & Straw’s locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland.

It’s a little mind-boggling to imagine savory dishes (like TURKEY) transformed into a sweet treat, but before you knock it, take a look at the website descriptions of the five new flavors Salt & Straw is offering for the “Thanksgiving Dinner of Ice Cream”.

Sweet Potato Casserole With Maple Pecans

We roast sweet potatoes down and mix them with cream and sugar to make a sweet, spicy, sticky ice cream. Then we mix in Oregon pecans caramelized with maple sugar. And then of course you have to add some marshmallow, so we top it off with hand-churned ribbons of our own delicious homemade gooey maple fluff.

Buttered Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

We’ve made over 600 different flavors of ice cream, and this is hands-down the most savory one we’ve ever served. We make a potato-flavored ice cream, thanks to the real potatoes we boil down until the starch turns to sugar, and then stir in our own homemade gravy fudge made from two mashed-up recipes, pun very much intended. The result is a super-dense, super-creamy ice cream that tastes sweet and salty with hints of chocolate, coffee and yes, baked mashed potato.

Persimmon Walnut Stuffing

Our stuffing course tastes like a warm spice cake, thanks to the chopped-up pieces of homemade toasted stuffing made with walnuts and bourbon raisins we add to a savory spiced ice cream. Why yes that is olive oil, salt, pepper and coriander, how insightful of your taste buds to notice. And for a sweet finish, we add roasted persimmons, made with fruit grown locally at Apricot Farms.

Spiced Goat Cheese & Pumpkin Pie

What makes pumpkin pie so delicious? We think it’s the creaminess of the custardy filling. So we challenged ourselves to figure out how to make this ice cream taste just like that. We start with goat-cheese ice cream, which we sprinkle with pumpkin pie spices, but the generous helping of mashed pumpkin we fold and swirl in really steals the show. If there were ever an ice cream that actually warms your face, this is the one. It’s the perfect end to a Thanksgiving meal of ice cream.

…and the pièce de résistance…

Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without turkey, but how exactly do we make it into deliciously salty, creamy ice cream? Two ways! We cook turkey stock mixed with sugar, spices and onions down until it bubbles into a caramel, which creates the base of the salted caramel ice cream.  And we also roast turkey skin until it’s crispy and then candy-coat it and mix bits of that in, too. So you could almost call this Double Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey.

Sounds irresistible now, doesn’t it?

Don’t fret if you don’t live near a Salt & Straw, as you’re able to order all the pints your heart desires and have them delivered in time for the holidays. It’ll be like having Thanksgiving dinner twice with just one food coma!
