We Dig It: Planters Pumpkin Spice Almonds Taste Like Cupcakes

We got a chance to test out the new seasonal Planters line and were pleasantly surprised by the palatable taste. With everything from vile Pumpkin Pie Vodka and questionable Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles (among other things), we were wary to say the least.

However, lo and behold, the Planters Pumpkin Spice Almonds are a seasonal Pumpkin-flavored treat that doesn’t make you want to gag. In fact, we wanted more. While the general response for the Winter Spiced Mix was, “I’m not mad at it,” the Pumpkin Spice Almonds were absolutely exquisite. They were like munching on crunchy pumpkin pie cupcakes, while still retaining the nutty flavor. Think a nutmeg, cinnamon cupcake minus the mounds of icing.

Hmm…possible clutch ingredient for a holiday recipe? Stay tuned.

Peanut Butter Cups

Believe it or not, it wasn’t until I was nearly 20 years old before deciding to give peanut butter a taste test. It all started with a Reese’s Cup.

Everyone always raved about how good these cups were, but I just couldn’t get myself to eat them. Buttery, spreadable peanuts were not my kind of a snack. If I was going to spread anything on a piece of bread, it was going to be Nutella or Eurokrem (hazelnuts and milk spread), not peanuts.

Until that one day at Speedway.

I was waiting to pay for the gas I had just pumped, and these candy bars were all just staring at me…errr I was staring at them. I eliminated every candy bar that had peanuts in it. I then changed my mind. I wanted to be daring! I put all the peanut candy bars back in play and I got rid of the favorites. After some deliberation, I made a choice – Reese’s and I were going to get to know each other, and like it.

Like it? I loved it! I ate up both cups while driving, and then I pulled over at another gas station to buy some more!

Soon enough I learned that I could make my own at home, but would they taste the same?

After several trials and errors, in my opinion, Miss Martha’s recipe is pretty darn close to it, if not better. This recipe contains white chocolate, as well as semi-sweet chocolate, and of course, peanut butter:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

(recipe courtesy of Martha Stewart)

You will need:

4 ounces white chocolate, chopped

1/2 cup smooth peanut butter ( my favorite to use is Natural Peanut Butter by Smucker’s)

12 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, chopped (I like to use dark chocolate)

2 tablespoons unsalted roasted peanuts, chopped

Line two 12-cup mini muffin pans with paper liners; set aside.

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate and peanut butter. Microwave, until almost melted, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, stirring halfway through.

Set aside to cool slightly.

Meanwhile, place semisweet chocolate in another microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave, stirring once or twice, until almost melted, 2 to 3 minutes.

Dividing evenly, use a spoon to layer semisweet chocolate and peanut butter mixture into liners, beginning and ending with chocolate; sprinkle with peanuts.

Place muffin pans in freezer until peanut butter cups are firm, about 15 minutes.

Bring to room temperature before serving.

Peanut Butter Chicken Chili

Yes, you heard right,  you’re looking at a bowl of chili that utilizes peanut butter as its main ingredient! This Peanut Butter Chicken Chili contains a creamy rich peanut butter that balances out the tang of tomatoes and the heat from the traditional chili spices. Another interesting toss-up is the usage of ground chicken as opposed to the traditional ground beef usage. Oh yeah, the entire dish is topped with some cool sour cream, chopped nuts and another dollop of peanut butter.  (Thx HealthyFoodForLiving)

Peanut Butter Slices

I was cleaning my kitchen cupboard yesterday and I realized that we had three different types of peanut butter. It got me to thinking about peanut butter, and of course led to searching our site to see what we’ve talked about in the past on peanut butter. Early October in 2008, one of our old correspondents; Reggie, posted about Peanut Butter Slices, which coincidently my friend Dave had just mentioned to me. So I thought to myself, why not re-up this awesome product for everyone that may have missed it, to see. Stewart Kennedy, the creator had to find a way to make peanut butter “unsticky.” Creating P.B. Slices took Kennedy, more than four years, thousands of feet of plastic cling wrap and countless samples hanging from his kitchen cabinets. In the end, diligence paid off as P.B. Slices became a wonderful, nationwide product. (Thx P.B. Slices)

Are Northwest Flights Serving Penis or Peanuts? [Humor]

Oh poor Zain Verjee. The CNN News anchor has recently blundered on live television, announcing that Northwest Airlines flights would begin serving “penis“, although she surely meant, “peanuts“. In this age of YouTube, news anchor bloopers like this one become long term archived video gems. It’s okay Zain, we know what you meant.

Five Guys Burger & Fries: 2 More OC Locations in 2010

Hot off its early August opening, Five Guys has inched its way into Orange County through its first Orange, CA location and has no plans to stop expansion before the year’s end. The Virginia-based burger chain will see the arrival of two new locations before we ring in the 2011 new year, one in Huntington Beach and the other in Tustin. According to the Maven, the exact locations will be:

  • The District, 2427 Park Ave, Tustin (Opening in November or December)
  • 18645 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach (Opening in September)

Particularly interesting will be the Tustin location. By setting up shop in The District shopping center, they will be in direct competition with In-N-Out, just a few feet away. What’s the word Orange County? Where will you be going for your fast food burger fix in 2011 and beyond??
