The Party Animal Pasts These 5 Celebrity Chefs Don’t Want You To Know

Sex and drugs and… lobster rolls? Why does it seem that so many celebrity chefs have a wild side? Maybe they just like slurping things out of spoons so much that they decided to try injecting those same things?

Many of them claim that their joie de vivre is the very thing that makes them such good chefs—in essence, their indulgent nature lets them know how to help other people indulge. Well, thank god they’re slinging crème brûlée and not crack cocaine. Let’s take a look at the rituals and party habits of some of the most well known chefs around the globe.

Anthony Bourdain

960

While we’ll never know all of what Bourdain smuggled in parts unknown, this jetsetter enjoys a vibrant lifestyle and never shies away from the sauce. Before he became famous, however, he fostered notorious habits for cocaine, heroin, and the occasional acid trip—which he describes vividly in his book Kitchen Confidential. He was also a remorseless, two-and-a-half pack a day smoker, until his daughter was born in 2007.

Keith Floyd

1433452067785

This chef might not be recognizable to many Americans, but he influenced an entire generation of boozing British gourmands. His off-the-cuff style included cracking jokes with members of his crew and drinking goblets of wine while filming. His excessive lifestyle of heavy drinking, smoking, and extravagant eating ultimately did him in, but he remains a whiskey-pickled touchstone for a hundred other party-hearty celebrity chefs that followed in his footsteps.

Nigella Lawson

nigella-lawson-overcomes-depression-by-bingeing-chocolates

British cook Nigella Lawson rose to success on the back of her book How to Be a Domestic Goddess. While she amassed a fortune of reportedly £100 million, money couldn’t buy her happiness, especially after she married art collector Charles Saatchi. The emotionally abusive relationship led Lawson to seek refuge in cocaine and pot. (Unfortunately, the abusive Saatchi forbade her from entertaining, meaning there was never any amazing coke- and pot-fueled gourmet Friendsgiving you’re imagining.) After the two split, she’s maintained that she’s totally drug free.

Epic Meal Time

Epic-meal-time

The meat-headed madmen at Epic Meal Time are constantly upping their game, and recently their cookouts have become full-blown ragers. With sexy assistants and tons of meat, what more do you want from a party? But these beasts of BBQ were smart enough to add a healthy dose of booze to their unhealthy dose of a calories, and Jack Daniels is a regular invite to each and every meal time.

Andrew Zimmern

download (1)

This cheeky traveler used to steal more than just a taste of Bizarre Foods. When he was getting down, Zimmern would snatch full purses to get his fix. While he hasn’t fully disclosed his personal habits during this dark period in his life, Zimmern was reportedly homeless for about a year and half owing to severe drug and alcohol addiction. Compared to that, eating octopus anus probably doesn’t sound so bad.

10 Tips For Perfecting Your Holiday Bar

The bar at a holiday party is like a bedroom in an episode of MTV Cribs—it’s where the magic happens. The rest of the venue, to be honest, is more or less unimportant.

So what if you didn’t hang up any tinsel, or you forgot to pick up a spruce at the tree farm? Maybe you didn’t grab enough Doritos? Or maybe you’ve lent all your chairs and convertible sofa to your buddy who wanted to build a human-sized beaver dam, and as a result don’t have anywhere to seat your guests—no biggie. As long as you master the bar area, your holiday bash is guaranteed to be killer. Think you can do that?

Of course not! That’s why you’re here reading this right now (or you misread the headline’s ‘Bar’ for Bra). Don’t worry, we’ve got just what the doctor ordered. Here are ten easy tips for setting up a stellar holiday bar, brah:

Use Hat Toppers to Turn Bottles (and everything else) into Lil’ Santas

1

Everything becomes instantly festive when wearing a cute little Santa hat, and we mean everything. This was actually proven by science a couple years ago. You got some bottles? Top ‘em. Empty bottles? Top ‘em. Mounted animal heads? Top ‘em.

1-2

Serve Grown Up Apple Cider

It goes without saying that the best part of any bar is the drinks which are born from it. We’ve got you covered with a brand-spankin’-new holiday cocktail recipe: the “Apple-Spiced Stoli Mule.” Feelin’ all warm and fuzzy already.

Bust Out Funny Holiday Napkins

3

The only con to offering your guests humorous holiday napkins is that they won’t actually want to use them—they’ll want to pocket and frame them in an elaborate scrapbook solely dedicated to how awesome your party was.

Step Up Your Ice Game

4

It’s time to shape up that ice, ice, baby—cubes are for noobs, and yes, I do miss 2005. Pick up some crazy/seasonal ice molds to add a touch of cool to your signature drinks. Bonus tip: add food coloring to coordinate with cocktail colors.

Give ‘Em the Red-Nosed

We lied—we’re actually giving you two holiday cocktail formulas out of the goodness of our hearts (and also, we figured you probably need all the help you can get). Glow up with this Rudolph-inspired recipe.

Get to Know Your Cocktail Herbs and Spices

6

Most people treat garnishes like some kind of magic pixie dust that makes their Instagram picture look better, which is not only wrong—it’s an abomination. Make sure you really know what’s up with herbs and spices when it comes to what flavors they’ll pair well with, especially holiday-centric ones like cinnamon, vanilla bean, and ginger.

Hang Stockings Full of “Good Cheer”

7

Let’s be honest, booze is what we really want in our stockings, right? Hang a couple of these behind the bar for a quick way to fill cups. You can even label them by the type of spirit (ie: “VODKA”).

Keep Up Spirits with Holiday Drinking Games

8

Either team up with your crew to dream up some crazy holiday-inspired drinking games, or look to the web for ideas. When in doubt, there’s always spin the bottle (insert wink).

Pump Up the Jams with a Holiday Playlist

Your friends should be drinking, singing, and dancing at this shindig, so keep a steady stream of holiday jingles on at all times to keep things merry. REPEAT: AT. ALL. TIMES.

Red Cup Party Lights

10

Glow up and string up these easy DIY red cup lights, because there’s just something about a red cup that screams “Let’s paaaaartaaaayyyy.”

Krispy Kreme UK Offers Ultimate Party Pack Featuring 2,400 Donuts

double hundred dozen krispy kreme

Those of you lucky to live across the pond now have access to a very special box of donuts that will definitely make you the hit of the office. Enter, the Double Hundred Dozen box of donuts. Yes, you read that right. Double. Hundred. Dozen.

Obviously meant for large scale events, Krispy Kreme UK is now offering this insane box of donuts as part of their “Occasions” line up. In case you’re as terrible at math as I am, this gigantic box of donuts houses 2,400 of the chain’s beloved original glazed donuts. In fact, the box measures in at 11.5 ft x 3 ft and requires eight Krispy Kreme members to deliver it.

Though there’s no price listed on Krispy Kreme UK’s website regarding the cost of this monstrosity, they are running a contest where one lucky UK based company can win their own Double Hundred Dozen. If you don’t quite need enough donuts to feed a small city, the donut giant also offers much smaller party options, such as their Doughnut Towers.

We Are Not Worthy: Lady Builds the Ultimate Super Bowl Snack Stadium

how-to-make-snack-stadium

I’ve never been a fan of pre-packaged party platters — lifeless celery sticks, ranch, meat and cheese cubes packed air-tight inside cold plastic containers. However, Heather of A Lil Curious created a Super Bowl Snack-Stadium (tutorial here) so breathtaking that it will make you swear off those platters sitting lonely next to the expired potato salad.

Using 22 bankers boxes, aluminum foil pans, styrofoam and lots and lots of super glue, Heather was able to create a beautiful display for her party’s game-day snacks. The “stadium” was filled with a generous amount of chicken wings, onion rings, chips, pizza, deli meat and cheeses, broccoli (some of which were banished to the “outdoors”), cheddar-wrapped hot dogs, bread, and even layered chip dip for the field.

Needless to say, it made for an extraordinary feast. Check out the before and after below:

turkey-meatball-bites-with-pesto-spicy-peppers-large-61310

‘Tis the season for eating, drinking and being all sorts of merry.

Chances are you’ve been invited to everything from ugly sweater parties to Christmas kickbacks. If you’re planning on hosting your own holiday get together or just want to be a gracious guest these Turkey Meatball Bites are the perfect finger food. They’re bite-sized so you can mack on one without spilling your spiked eggnog, which means no holiday party fouls. Made with ground turkey wrapped in puff pastry then topped with traditional Christmas colors thanks to some pesto and sweet peppadew peppers these poppable appetizers might just be the hit of the party.

_____

Turkey Meatball Bites

Makes 36 Pieces

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup seasoned dry bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup pesto sauce
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons canola oil
  • All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 of a 17.3-ounce package Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Sheets (1 sheet), thawed
  • 18 Peppadew whole sweet piquanté peppers or pepperoncini, cut in half lengthwise
  • Marinara or traditional-style pasta sauce, heated

How to Make it:

  • Mix the turkey, bread crumbs, cheese, egg, garlic and 3 tablespoons pesto in a large bowl. Season with the salt and black pepper. Shape the turkey mixture into 36 (1-inch) mini meatballs.
  •  Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the meatballs and cook for 10 minutes or until well browned on all sides. Remove the meatballs from the skillet. Repeat with the remaining oil and meatballs.
  •  Heat the oven to 400°F.
  • Sprinkle the flour on the work surface. Unfold the pastry sheet on the work surface. Cut the pastry sheet into 3 rectangles along the fold lines. Cut each rectangle crosswise into 12 (3/4-inch) strips, making 36 in all.
  • Top each meatball with 1/4 teaspoon pesto sauce and 1 pepper half, cut-side down. Wrap 1 pastry strip around each and press the seams to seal. Place the pastries, seam-side down, into 36 mini muffin-pan cups.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown and the meatballs are cooked through. Serve with the remaining pesto sauce and the marinara sauce for dipping.

This Spherical Oven Functions As Both A Pizza Oven and A Disco Ball

 4

Just when you thought pizza couldn’t get any better, someone went and invited a Disco Ball Pizza Oven. As in, an oven shaped exactly like a giant disco ball, in the middle of a swanky cool restaurant.  Get ready for the best pizza party/disco of your life.

5

Designed by Lukas Galehr for Disco Volante, a pizzeria in Vienna, this gorgeous masterpiece features a spherical pizza oven covered in hundreds of mirrored tiles. It’s anchored to a chimney, totally functional, and actually works as both an oven and a disco ball.

When the restaurant lights go down, multicolored spotlights are aimed at the oven as it begins to rotate, transforming the restaurant into a bumpin’ dance spot.  Like I said, best pizza disco of your life.
