Matthew McConaughey Just Won A Celebrity Burger Showdown, Here’s What He Made

May 28 was a big day for burger lovers.

In celebration of National Burger Day, Off the Menu, the LA-based food discovery app, teamed up with Uber Eats to host The Burger Showdown. The challenge paired more than 60 celebrities including Matthew McConaughey, Paris Hilton, and Dwyane Wade with restaurants in 10 cities to create their ultimate burger, available exclusively on Uber Eats. Even better, the Showdown supported Frontline Foods, a grassroots organization that supports local restaurants while feeding frontline workers and impacted communities..

Each pairing created a video sharing their burger inspiration and recipe, which lived on theburgershowdown.com for fans and burger lovers to watch and vote on their favorite before ordering on Uber Eats from May 28-31. 

And, the winners are in: 

Best Burger (US):

The Best Burger in the US was awarded to The Jacobite, made by Scottish actor Sam Heughan and Boston’s The Haven. It’s made with a chuck beef patty smothered in bacon-infused marmalade, pickle sauce, arugula, tomatoes, Huntsman cheese, deep fried onions, and a hand-cut french fry wedge served on a milk bun to create a deviously rich burger. 

Best Burger (Canada):

The Best Canadian Burger was won by the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner and The Burger’s Priest. The Mitch One-Six Burger kept it simple, with a smashed patty, cheddar cheese, thick cuts of bacon, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, the famed High Priest Sauce, and a classic, soft house bun. Simple, to the point, and dependable. 

Most Creative Collaboration:

The winners of the Most Creative Collaboration, Shay Mitchell and NYC’s Flip Sigi, created the Filipino-inspired Shay Sigi Burger, which featured a three-meat burger that bonded longanisa, ground beef, and bacon. Seared on a hot pan, the amalgamation of a patty was topped with pickled onions, tomato, lettuce, a homemade banana ketchup, and a pan de sal bun.

Max Greenfield and Chicago’s Busy Burger’s collab, the Busy Max Veggie Delight, won the Best Plant-Based Burger presented by Lightlife. Here’s the juicy deets: Two Lightlife Plant-Based Burgers topped with pepper jack cheese and cut with guacamole and sauteed veggies, were topped with butter leaf lettuce, tomato, pickles, and Busy Burger’s signature Busy Sauce.

Rounding out the awards by being inducted into The Burger Showdown Hall of Fame is Matthew McConaughey and Aaron Franklin of Austin’s Loro, who created a burger for those who hate when their patty slides out the back (or “slidie-out-backie,” as deemed by Mr. McConaughey) when bitten. Dubbed the “And…” burger, it is made with a brisket and chuck patty and brioche buns, then stacked with double-cut smoked bacon, American cheese, pickled jalapeños, butter leaf lettuce, thin-sliced tomato, mustard, and a jalapeño aioli.

This New Food Festival Is an Ode to the Chicken Strip

Chicken tender fanatics often live out their passion in silence. The dish can draw some serious side-eyes if ordered for dinner during a night out. Once the age has passed where “being picky” is a legitimate excuse for not wanting to try new menu items, the childhood favorite is usually reserved for the occasional bar order or desperate fast food buy. But, those crunchy breaded chicken strips are loved by most for a reason — they’re easily made and moldable to just about any profile. 

Later this month in Los Angeles, tenders will be getting the recognition they deserve, when Off the Menu and John Terzian of the H.Wood Group will be teaming up to throw the city’s first TenderFest at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on November 15. The festival aims to show off the tender’s full potential by bringing together some of the area’s top chicken vendors, including Delilah, Fuku, Raising Cane’s, Hot Mutha Clucker, CAULIPOWER, and Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.

Additionally, famed chefs Nancy Silverton, Wolfgang Puck, Chris Oh, and Timothy Hollingsworth will each be crafting their interpretation of a tender to serve in front of a panel of judges. The winner of this showdown will be gifted a cash prize to give to a charity of their choice. 

Tickets for TenderFest are available now for $65, which pays for unlimited tenders and beer. The VIP tickets, which run for $175, also include the food and booze, as well as event merchandise, a VIP lounge, access to VIP-only vendor Dave’s Hot Chicken, a gift bag, and a 6 month membership to Off the Menu.

Off the Menu has been throwing dope food-focused events for a while now, and is a consistent source for innovative and creative flavors, which stands out in a Southern California culinary universe that can tend to stagnate on flavor-of-the-month trends.

Los Angeles is going to a have a chicken wing festival. Writing that out seems like a dream to me — I, connoisseur of any fried bird, one who considers fried chicken as the only food group that matters. But here I am drooling at the prospect of filling myself to level ten out of ten on the full as f*ck scale on glorious, crispy, crunchy, sauced up chicken wings. And what’s even better is that said wing fest is equipping patrons with their own bucket to fill up with as much wings as they can fit.

Yes, this all you can eat chicken wing festival, aptly named Wing Fest, is coming to bless Angelenos’ wing lovin’ hearts on July 29 AKA National Chicken Wing Day at Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Boulevard. And it’s all courtesy of Lawrence Longo of Off The Menu, who has switched his focus from eating a burger everyday to chicken wings. What fans can expect is a lineup of the best of the best: Pizzeria Mozza’s wings Alla diovola, Button Mash’s double fried sweet and spicy wings, The Greyhound’s sweet cherry BBQ wings, Banh Oui’s Vietnamese-style wing, Chef Kang Food Rehab’s Korean-style wings, and even Anchor Bar, the originators of the Buffalo Wing, all the way from New York, amongst a roster of other solid wing purveyors.

General admission for unlimited wings starts at $45, and tickets are available online. Pro tip: the Guatemalan Insanity wings from The Greyhound should come with a roll of Tums and a quart of milk. Trust me. They don’t call it “Insanity” for nothing.

EDM DJ Marshmello Creates His Own Secret Burger That Features Charcoal Ketchup Leather

For superstar EDM DJ, Marshmello, rockin’ a massive festival proves to be an easy challenge. His ear for what can get a set poppin’ off and the handiwork he wields at his fingertips to mix and manipulate beats has lead to his astounding success in the electronic music world. But did you know those clever hands can craft a mean burger, too?

It’s an off-the-wall thought, but Marshmello has actually created a secret burger alongside Los Angeles burger hub, Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, to enter in the Secret Burger Showdown event from Postmates and Off The Menu. The meaty throw down that pits celebrities and their burger creations against each other is happening on Saturday May 26, as a part of the LA Food Bowl festivities that Angelenos have been experiencing throughout the month of May.

The details in the burger are as eclectic as the sounds Marshmello loves working with. Think Plan Check’s signature ketchup letter infused with charcoal to create the distinct facial features of the DJ right onto the burger’s house-made Swiss cheese. Other tasty trappings include a prime ribeye 28-day dry-aged patty, kombu pickles, onion, watercress, and salt & pepper mayo, all in a crunch bun. It’s a lineup of ingredients that’s just as satisfying as the beat drop after a climactic build up.

Marshmello, Tommy Lee and Shay Mitchell Amongst Celebs Competing In Secret Burger Competition

Jay-Z versus Solange, KimYe versus Taylor, The Rock versus Tyrese — the public loves a good celebrity feud. Spats between the showbiz elite always capture headlines, and for the most part, it’s the usual he said, she said and finger pointing narrative. Yawn. Beef’s gone stale these days, really.

But what if I told you that celebrity beefs can actually be put to the test over how juicy their actual beef is in a burger battle? Confused? Intrigued? Both? Good. Let me break it down for you. This Saturday, May 26, Postmates and foodie favorite app, Off The Menu, are throwing together a Secret Burger Showdown as part of the LA Food Bowl festivities that involves celebrities teaming up with Los Angeles’ hottest restaurants to create wildly inventive and mouth-watering burgers to duke it out against one another.

So think EDM DJ Marshmello tag-teaming with Plan Check to create a Marshmello Burger that’s got a patty comprised of prime ribeye dry-aged for 28 days and topped with charcoal-infused ketchup leather made up as the face of the party-rocking maestro himself. Then imagine them going toe-to-toe with Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell and Top Chef alum Marcel Vigneron of WOLF, who’s got the formidable Bourgeois Burger that features decadent details like a Beyond Burger patty, truffle mayo, and truffle shavings.

The battle’s gonna be bloody (slightly, at least, because medium rare, of course) and contentious, but most of all, lights out delicious.
