Chipotle Debuts Carne Asada Nationwide

Photo: Omari Allen

Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced the long awaited arrival of Mexican food staple, carne asada. Having tested the new menu item in Fresno and Cincinnati to amazing results, they’re now launching it nationwide for a limited time. It took two years of research and development by Chipotle’s Director of Culinary and Menu Development Chad Brauze in order to nail the perfect recipe. I had the opportunity to sample their new protein and am pleased to say that it hits the mark in terms of flavor and consistency.

Chipotle’s carne asada is thinly sliced and grilled with lime juice, cilantro, coriander, cinnamon, and cumin, giving it a distinct taste next to their usual steak option. Citrusy hints mingle with aromatic flavors further enhanced by a kick of spice. The consistency is tender and buttery; a lighter steak alternative with a fresher finish. It manages to maintain the carne asada experience one would experience at a tried and true spot while elevating the typical Chipotle experience. Moreover, keeping in line with their commitment to quality assurance, the new carne asada is Keto, Paleo and Whole30 compliant.

For those that live in Dallas, Detroit and San Diego, Chipotle is also testing out a new sauce to pair with your protein. It’s called Queso Blanco and is made of Monterey Jack, white cheddar, serano, chipotle, and poblano peppers mixed with various spices. I had the pleasure of sampling it and can confirm that it’s cheesier and creamier, with a spicy whisper at the end which makes it stand apart from their current queso. It can be used as a dipping sauce or a perfect compliment to your burrito or bowl. Depending on reception, the Queso Blanco sauce may soon join the Chipotle menu officially.

Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccinos Exist and They Look Like Pure Magic

Less than a week after the infamous “Pink Drink” made its way off the secret menu, Starbucks is blowing fans’ minds with the introduction of Unicorn Frappuccinos.

The unicorn food trend isn’t exactly new. From hot chocolate to grilled cheese, the edible rainbow movement has only continued to grow in 2017. With all the other specialty frappuccinos the coffee giant has offered, it’s kind of surprising they didn’t jump on the unicorn bandwagon sooner.

Rumblings about this whimsical drink started as most internet rumors do, with a Reddit post. After trolling Instagram, Twitter, and through confirmations from Starbucks Partners, it was confirmed that unlike an actual unicorn, this drink is indeed real.

It seems that ‘bucks lovers are having a hard time agreeing on the taste of this limited edition drink, which is probably because the official name of this fantastical frapp is “The Flavor Changing Unicorn Frappuccino.” Most reviews of the magical drink liken the taste to tropical Skittles. According to Starbucks Barista, @TheChubbyBandit, the frappuccino is made with “a mango creme frappuccino with a couple of pink powder scoops, sour blue syrup drizzle, and whipped cream sprinkled with blue and pink powder.”

Through the power of social media, perhaps this Insta-worthy Unicorn Frapp could follow in the Pink Drink’s footsteps to secure its own spot on the Starbucks Official Menu. Until then, be sure to grab your Unicorn Frappuccino from April 19-23.

What do you get when you cross a pizza chain with a country singer. Why, BBQ pizzas of course. Pizza giant Pizza Hut has partnered up with country crooner Blake Shelton to create a new line of pizzas because what’s more American than pizza and country music.

Blake’s Smokehouse BBQ includes hardwood smoked bacon, smoked ham with a hint of sugar, and juicy pork. Hawaiian BBQ is a spin on the traditional with smoked ham, sweet pineapple, and crisp green peppers. Last but not least, the Honey BBQ Chicken is topped with white meat chicken, hardwood smoked bacon, and sweet red onions. All pizzas are topped with a Honey BBQ sauce and a hand tossed crust with a toasty cheddar edge. Nomz.

The new pizzas will be available starting Monday, May 12 for $11, for a dollar more you get a 2-liter to wash your pizza down with.

Burger King Replaces Beef With Chicken to Create New Chicken Big King

Last fall, Burger King introduced their version of McDonalds’ signature sandwich. Burger King’s latest sandwich is the poultry cousin to the original Big King, called none other than the Chicken Big King. The new sandwich is extremely similar to the Big King featuring pickles, onions, lettuce, American cheese, King sauce, and a triple bun. Literally the only difference between the two sandwiches is that the Chicken Big King has two chicken patties instead of beef patties.

Burger King isn’t the first chain to offer up a double chicken burger. KFC debuted their Big Boss sandwich last month in Canada and even Big Mac originator McDonalds created their own Chicken Big Mac, which unfortunately is only offered in Arabia.

The new Chicken Big King will cost you $3.59 but it’s also being offered as part of Burger King’s 2 for $5 deal, which means you can get both Big Kings for a pretty sweet deal.

McDonalds Germany Adds Curry Sandwiches to Value Menu

Seriously McDonalds. Again with the delicious looking gourmet-ish menu items that the golden arches refuses to share with their loyal U.S. customers. Why do you hate us so?

While we’re stuck with lame “Dollar and More Menu” items like the Cheddar Onion McChicken, McDonalds Germany is spicing up their value menu with the addition of curry sandwiches. Cue the jealous groans.

The two sandwiches, Curry Beef and Curry Chicken, are essentially your average hamburger or McChicken just topped with a spicy curry sauce and sliced onions. I’d like to imagine that the Curry Chicken taste like curry chicken katsu on a bun…drool. This isn’t the first time McDonalds has added curry to the menu, the chain previously debuted curry sandwiches in Japan and Hong Kong.

To add insult to injury McDonalds Germany still has a real value menu where these currywiches will only run you 1 Euro. Hmph.

Starbucks Japan Debuts Limited Time Fresh Banana & Chocolate Cream Frappuccinos

Starbucks Japan has been whipping up some pretty delicious flavors recently. Last month they debuted their Creamy Vanilla Latte with Lemony Swirl, now for a limited time the coffee giant is adding Fresh Banana & Chocolate Cream Frappuccinos to the menu.

The new frozen drink comes is available in two flavors:

The Fresh Banana & Caramel Cream Frappuccino, which is a caramel frapp blended with an entire banana then topped with whipped cream, white chocolate brownie crumbles, then drizzled with caramel sauce.

The Fresh Banana Chocolate & Cream Frappuccino is basically the same thing but with chocolate, it contains a whole banana blended in a chocolate frapp topped with whipped cream, brownie crumbles and chocolate sauce.

These have banana in them so it’s totally healthy right? The frapps come with extra wide straws so you won’t suck yourself silly trying to get at those brownie and banana chunks.

Both drinks are set to debut on April 16 and will be available until May 11. To get a version of this frapp here in the U.S. might we suggest asking your local barista to blend a whole banana into your favorite chocolate or caramel frapp?

McDonalds Switzerland Signature Line Includes $12 Burger

Yet again we’re left in the dust while McDonalds debuts some epic menu items everywhere else but here in the U.S. The latest menu we have to be jealous over is the premium Signature Line which is being served all the way in Switzerland.

The Signature Line’s burger is called “The Prime” and runs 10.90 Swiss francs, which translates to a little over $12 USD. The burger, developed with celebrity Swiss chef Rene Schudel, features a 6.3oz  Swiss beef patty, rustic mountain cheese (whatever that means), coleslaw, arugula, and of course a special sauce.

Other items available as part of the Signature Line include “The Chips” which are described as thick potato chips, medallion-cut fries, potato salad, coleslaw, Caesar salad, and couscous salad.

Though no plans have been announced to bring the Signature Line to the U.S., we’re hoping that one day McDonalds will deem us worthy for more premium items like the Bacon Clubhouse.

Starbucks Sweetens Menu by Adding Caramel Treats

Barely a month after their Caramel Flan Latte debuted Starbucks has decided to sweeten up its bakery menu with even more dulce-licious treats.

The new menu items include a Chocolate Caramel Muffin, Salted Caramel Square and a La Boulange Caramel Sticky Bun. Rounding out the caramel themed sweets is Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Cake Pop which has been on the menu for a while.

The majority of the new items feature salted caramel, appeasing customers’ sweet and salty tastes.

Chocolate Caramel Muffin: chocolate muffin with a caramel center

Salted Caramel Square: chocolate square with crunchy pretzels, pecans and caramel mixed in

Caramel Pecan Sticky Bun: flaky pastry with caramel pecan filling

Ranging from 380-410 calories the coffee chain’s new sweets clock in at a caloric count comparable to your favorite latte. You should be able to find these new menu items at your local Starbucks, but the Caramel Sticky Bun is only available at locations that serve La Boulange pastries.
