Donuts Were Apparently The Earliest Recorded Dessert We Made

Happy #NationalDonutDay! Go big or go home…

A post shared by Mario Lopez (@mariolopezextra) on

It’s National Donut Day today, which means that thousands of people across the country will be lining up to score some sweet deals and take pictures of their favorite fried dough treats to paste all over the Internet. Donuts have extensively evolved across America, from the time-honored original glazed donut to exorbitant and decorative creations at places like Voodoo Doughnut.

On a day that commemorates such an iconic pastry, it’s important to recognize the history behind one of the US’s favorite sweets. If you’re hoping to get a taste of history’s first-ever donut on National Donut Day, you’re in luck because several restaurants still cook and sell that tasty piece of history.

LOUKOUMADES TIME!! @sjgreekfestival #sjgreekfestival #sanjosegreekfestival #sanjose #loukoumades #opa #greekfood

A post shared by San Jose Greek Festival (@sjgreekfestival) on

I’m talking about what may possibly be the oldest dessert on the entire planet: Loukoumades (Λουκουμάδες). These Greek donut holes are made from deep-fried yeasty dough that gets drizzled or soaked in honey. The result is an explosion of syrupy sweet goodness every time you bite into one. Now frequently sold at Greek restaurants and Greek festivals across the country, these decadent bites were actually developed over two thousand years ago.

Back then, loukoumades were known as “charisoi” (χαρίσιοι), which translates in modern English to “charisma” (their more modern name coming from the Arabic word لقمة or luqma, which means small bite). According to the ancient Greek poet Callimachus, they were one of the first-ever prizes awarded to winners of the Olympic Games, which began back in 776 B.C. Depicted in his writing as “honey tokens,” Callimachus’s description of them in his writings marks the earliest mention of any kind of pastry or dessert in literature from around the entire world. That means that loukoumades, and therefore donut holes, are likely the first-ever recorded dessert in the history of our planet.

Since that time, the recipe for loukoumades spread throughout Turkey, Egypt, Persia, and even Italy, which eventually led to the development of zeppole, and then donuts, throughout the entire world. So when you order that donut for your Instagram feed, take some time to remember where these glazed treats came from, and that when you bite into one, you’re also biting into a piece of history.

Dunkin’ Donuts to Give Away Free Donuts Today, Society Rejoices

For donut lovers, June 2nd is the holiday to end all holidays: National Doughnut Day. Plenty of shops and chains celebrate the holiday with special treats and offers, but no one does it quite like the pros. And by “pros,” we obviously mean the good people at Dunkin’ Donuts.

You only have to look at the company name to know that this is their day. And they mean business.

In the tradition of DD (this can mean Dunkin’ Donuts or Doughnut Day, up to you), the company is heralding the holiday by offering guests a free classic donut of their choice with the purchase of any beverage. The offer is good all day on June 2nd in-store and through On-the-Go Mobile Ordering at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide.

Oh no, that means you have to buy a coffee to get a free donut! (Kidding, what crazy person would be upset about that?) In fact, go ahead and buy yourself a Coolatta instead — it’s National Doughnut Day, so treat yo’ self.

But that’s not all folks. Dunkin’ Donuts is also celebrating National Doughnut Day with two new donut varieties featuring fun and colorful new sprinkle toppings.

The Vanilla Cake Batter Donut features vanilla-flavored cake batter filling, frosted with chocolate icing and topped with confetti sprinkles, while the Dunkin’ Donuts Sprinkles Donut is frosted with white icing and topped with pink and orange sprinkles shaped like the brand’s iconic “DD” logo. Both are available for a limited time at participating Dunkin’ Donuts, and there’s no better time to try them than June 2nd!

New donuts that you can also get for free? What a time to be alive.

How to Make Mini Gooey Donut S’mores

Happy National Donut Day! Assuming you’ve already visited all of your local donut shops for your free donuts, I’m going to suggest going a step further and commemorating this momentous occasion by making a donut treat of your own: Donut s’mores! It’s a super easy recipe replacing your garden variety graham with a mini cinni donut. Yum-O!

Donut Smores

Mini Donut S’mores

(makes 1 dozen s’mores)

  • 12 mini cinnamon donuts
  • 6 marshmallows (the s’more-making size)
  • XL Hershey’s Chocolate Bar

  1. Cut donuts in half like you were slicing a bagel.
  2. Cut mallows in half to create two shorter mallows.
  3. Toast mallow halves in toaster oven until soft and light golden brown in color (about 2 minutes).
  4. Place mallow half onto bottom donut half, top with one piece of Hershey’s chocolate bar, and return to toaster oven to get the chocolate just a teensy bit melty (about 15 to 30 seconds depending on how hot the toaster still is).
  5. Remove from toaster oven, top with other half of donut, and holy goodness, dig in.

If cinnamon donuts aren’t your style, feel free to use powdered, chocolate glazed, crunchy, or whatever other flavor mini donut you can find. Celebrate donuts everywhere by making this really simple and really tasty treat today!
