The Purposely Sexual Secret Behind The McDonald’s Logo

If you have an irrationally dirty mind, ever looked at those golden arches on the McDonald’s logo and thought to yourself, “boobs,” you were actually right.

Of course, the double arched logo was made to look like an “m,” but design consultant Louis Cheskin also found value in the logo looking like a pair of nourishing mom boobs.

According to Eric Schlosser, author of “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American meal,” McDonald’s was going to change its logo in the 1960s, but Cheskin used his psychology skills to convince the brand that subliminally boob-shaped arches would help attract customers.

Consistent with the Freudian belief that humans are sexually driven, McDonald’s was convinced to keep the logo in tact, and rounded “m” has remained since.

If driving by a McDonald’s makes you feel some type of way, now you know it was on purpose.

The Transformation of Iconic Food Logos, from McDonald’s To M&M’s

A company’s logo can be a huge part of branding, a crucial part to a consumer’s first impression. Some of the most iconic are those of food brands, and the infographic below illustrates just how much transformation some logos have undergone throughout the years.

Most people are familiar with M&M’s simple, large brown font and Coca-Cola’s classic script lettering, both of which have stayed fairly similar since conception. However, if we rewind to 1893, for example, Pepsi’s logo is unrecognizable, simply reading “Brad’s Drink.” McDonald’s didn’t always have those famous golden arches, either — its very first logo read “McDonald’s Famous Barbeque,” with no color or graphics.

Starbucks vs ‘Starbung,’ Starbucks Sues Bangkok Vendor Over Logo

Starbucks is suing a coffee vendor in Bangkok for using a logo curiously similar to the coffee giant’s.

Starbung — owned by 43-year-old Damrong Maslae — employs a green-and-white insignia featuring stars and a moon with a smiling figure at the center. Starbucks filed a cease-and-desist letter on Oct 17th last year, requesting the vendor to stop usage of the logo. Maslae and his brother ignored the warning and proceeded to display their Starbung logo on shirts, stickers and wrappers.

In turn, the US firm is suing the brothers for 300,000 baht (~ US $9,600), in addition to a 7.5% annual interest and monthly installments of 30,000 baht until the pair drop their Starbung emblem. Starbucks insisted that the similarity between the two logos may confuse customers into thinking they are purchasing Starbucks coffee when it’s in fact Starbung.

Maslae, a father of six, informed the Guardian that his logo took no inspiration from Starbuck’s but was influenced by Islam, his religion. The Bangkok-based street vendor responded to Starbuck’s second request by offering to sell Starbung to the coffee chain for 3 million baht (~US $100,000).

Meat Advertising May Lead to Printed Pork Chops

For IDEO’s WebDev101 sessions, designer Ivy Hu experimented with laser-cutting to make posters on unconventional objects: like meat.  Yes, your steak might soon be full of advertiser’s messages, your burgers emblazoned with logos, your pork chops printed with fonts.

Hu created a laser-etched meat poster containing printed words and details, proving printing on meat is possible.  Which of course raises the question, if ads are printed on meat, will advertising soon be truly inescapable? Umami already brands their buns with their logo, so Big Mac patties with laser-etched arches aren’t too far fetched.

Watch a slab of meat get the works below:

McDonald’s Figures You Know Who They Are By Now, Eliminates Branding in New Ads

Those crispy fries may have finally achieved world domination.  McDonald’s has launched a series of advertisements across France that are completely “unbranded.”  Each of the four ads lack text or logos, yet the featured classics — fries, Big Mac, Sundae, and Filet-O-Fish (whose ad subtly sneaks in M logo on a wrapper, but we won’t tell) — have apparently become so iconic that they need no introduction.

This of course, leaves us with only one question: Is McDonald’s ready to put their food on such an intimate, bare display?  And are we ready to see our fast food so closely, so simply, so (dare I say it) beautifully? Because one thing’s for sure.  McDonald’s has raised the bar, and I will now expect my fries to come to me looking like a beauty shot each and every time. So bring on the unbranded, picture-perfect fries and a Sundae, because I am ready.

After 30 Years, Hooters Gets a Younger, More Dapper Hootie

After serving up their vintage logo (below) for 30 years, Hooters has decided it’s time for a change. The go-to American institution for buffalo wings and “pleasant conversation” is giving their scruffy ol’ old owl the boot for a younger, more dapper Hootie.

Atlanta design firm Sky Design, revamped the logo and created a modern, sleeker look. But don’t worry guys and gals, the double entendre is still there. “We want to keep the tongue-in-cheek wink going,” says Dave Henninger, chief marketing officer.

Of course, the move was not one Hooters took lightly. After presenting various owl designs to 300 consumers, roughly 9 to 10 preferred the new logo to the old one. In the next few months, we can expect to see the new logo appearing everywhere from menus to waitress uniforms.

According to USA Today, Hooters has been stagnant for the past decade as other “breastaurants,” such as Twin Peaks and Tilted Kilt, have snatched up customers with menus and designs that appear to Millennials.

I’m guessing it’s only a matter of time before nostalgic Hooters fans start repping “Bring Back Hootie!” shirts.
