The Wildest Eats You Can Find At This Year’s LA County Fair

This year, the LA County Fair is going on a bit of a nostalgia trip with a Route 66 theme. As an homage to the iconic highway, several vendors at the fair will be serving up special items that cost just $6.60.

We’ve eaten our way through the entire fair and found some of the wildest $6.60 deal options that you can find. Each of these has visual pop and loads of flavor, making them worth putting both in your mouth and your Instagram feeds.

Of course, there’s also plenty of regular items at the fair that are just as out-of-bounds, and you’ll want to check those out too. Below is a list of both $6.60 and other festival foods that are worth heading to the LA County Fair for.

$6.60 Items

Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese Waffle Cone | Chicken Charlie’s

SoCal fair food legend Chicken Charlie is back at it, this time with a spicy, creamy mac & cheese waffle cone. It’s a combo of spicy buffalo chicken with cheesy mac, piled inside of a hot rod-red cone that’s sure to catch some eyes.

Texas Panhandle Pastrami Fries | C&C Concessions

If you’re looking for loaded fries with a twist, these pastrami fries will satisfy that craving. Crispy spuds are loaded up with hot pastrami, a blend of shredded cheeses, and pickles.

Nitro Popcorn | Nitro Snack Dragon Breath

Nitro Snack Dragon Breath is bringing back this viral item from last year’s fair. The kaleidoscopic popcorn is served after a dip in some liquid nitrogen, so you’ll be breathing “smoke” like a dragon when you take a bite.

Deep Fried Pecan Pie | Fried-a-Fair

It’s not a fair unless something outlandish heads into the deep fryer. This time around, it’s a hefty slice of pecan pie that’s getting the treatment.

Other Items To Check Out

Nitro Sourbomb | Nitro Snack Dragon Breath

Sour Bombs, wafer-like candies with sour powder in the middle, are also getting the liquid nitrogen treatment. Nitro Snack dips a stick of them into liquid nitrogen so they’re served at temperatures way below freezing, creating a smoky effect.

Cowboy Sundae | Chuckwagon

If you’re looking for dessert, this is not the treat for you. But if you want BBQ, this IS what you’re looking for. Chuckwagon’s “sundae” consists of beans, slaw, mashed potatoes, meat, BBQ sauce, and topped with a “cherry” tomato.

Giant Rib | Biggy’s

Biggy’s is selling a MASSIVE beef rib that you can show off to everyone. Mad props to anyone who struts around the fair chomping on this like a carnivorous badass.

4 On The Floor Pizza | Absolutely Italian

Pasta and pizza unite in this creative mashup of Italian foods. A creamy penne pasta is loaded onto cheese-covered pizza dough before taking a trip through the oven.

PBJ & Sriracha Funnel Cake | Dutchman’s Funnel Cake

The classic combo of peanut butter and jelly gets piled onto a funnel cake, but with a spicy kick. A hit of sriracha is added to take this fair food classic to the next level.

The LA County Fair runs through September 23rd in Pomona, CA. You’ve got until then to check out all of these crazy eats PLUS everything else the fair has to offer.

5 Awesome New Foods To Try At The LA County Fair

It’s time for the LA County Fair once again. Our entire Foodbeast crew got a sneak peek at some of the newest offerings from this year’s veritable fried food expo, held at the Pomona Fairgrounds.

We’ve got returning favorites like bacon-wrapped fried chicken, deep-fried pizza, deep fried avocado bombs, funnels cakes, and many other dishes that took the shallow plunge into a pool of searing oil.

Check out our Facebook live stream to get an up-close look at fair foods the little devil on your shoulder would shy away from.

Deep-fried Hot Sauce

Deep-Fried-Hot-Sauce

This is Frank’s RedHot Sauce mixed with some batter, balled, and deep-fried. The hot sphere of solidified sauce is served with a spicy ranch and a jalapeño pepper. With its incredible kick, we see it as a fiery hush puppy. If you’re not a fan of buffalo-style heat, however, this is definitely not for you.

Bacon S’mores on a stick

Smores-Bacon-Fried

Imagine the best s’mores you’ve ever made during a childhood campout. Got it? OK, now let’s deep fry it and throw some bacon crumbs on that bad boy. Now, to actually see that dream come to life, hit up Chicken Charlie’s and feast on his newest dessert that takes marshmallows and fries them up in a corn dog batter. The sweet entry is then topped with chocolate drizzle and chopped bacon to stake its claim as the most intense item at this year’s fair.

Chicken-in-Waffle

Chicken-In-Waffle

We LOVE anything that has to do with fried chicken and waffles, though it can be tough getting both components onto your fork. The best part of this year’s Chicken-in-Waffles is that the iconic dish is everything’s fused together in one majestic, hand-held treat.

Bacon-Wrapped Pork Belly Corn Dogs

Bacon-Pork-Belly-Corn-Dog

Pork belly fans’ already-clogged hearts will skip a dangerous beat with this one. The culprit here is a piece of pork belly that’s wrapped in bacon, coated in batter, and deep-fried like a corn dog. This fatty tour de force inspired many heated bacon discussions.

Found at Biggy’s.

Jackfruit Vegan Tacos

Jackfruit-Carnitas

We were shocked to find that our favorite dish at the fair this year was actually something vegan! These shredded, seasoned jackfruit tacos are topped with a vegan chipotle mayonnaise and coleslaw. Completely plant-based and indistinguishable from its porky counterpart, these tacos just might win over some carnivorous fans.

The Best Food At The LA Fair Is Actually A Vegan Taco

For a food lover, going to the fair can be a blast. Everything’s either deep-fried or wrapped in bacon. However, eating all that fried stuff really takes a toll on your body. That’s why we were delighted to discover the best tasting thing at this year’s LA County Fair was, in fact, a vegan dish.

Jackfruit-Carnitas

This year, a booth called Plant Food For People shocked us with one of their dishes: a carnitas-style taco made with shredded jackfruit. It was arguably the tastiest dish there.

We tried a bite and honestly could not tell the difference between the taco and its porky counterpart. The shredded jackfruit are specially seasoned and thrown on the grill. Afterwards, the jackfruit is dressed up with a vegan Chipotle mayonnaise and coleslaw.

After ingesting a ton of fried foods on premises, this was a welcome surprise.

Owners Jeremy and Genise Castaneda said that they plan on opening a stand in Venice sometime in the near future. For now, you can find them slanging these delectable vegan jackfruit tacos at this year’s LA County Fair.

An Intimate Look At DEEP FRIED SLIM FAST Bars, This Summer’s Hot New Fair Food

deep-fried-slim-fast-bars

Last week news broke that the Deep Frying King Pin (yes, that’s what we call this G of the fair food game) Chicken Charlie was going to deep fry something that would make haters’ heads explode: SLIM FAST bars.

We jumped down to the San Diego Fair to kick it with Charlie himself at the booth. He was posted up against a wall of produce behind his booth, as well as boxes and boxes of these:

chicken-charlie-foodbeast-slimfast-bars

That’s right. SLIM FAST bars. For our readers who may be too young to remember, or those that need a refresher, Slim Fast is a brand of diet and weight loss products that includes shakes, snacks, packaged meals and other dietary supplements. Chicken Charlie is no slim chicken, and decided that he’d take the Chewy Chocolate Crisp Slim Fast protein bars and deep fry them sunnavabitches, then hit them with a chocolate drizzle and powdered sugar.

These things are gonna be available everywhere Chicken Charlie is this summer, including stops at the OC Fair and the LA Fair.

Here’s a video to tide you over until you get to a summer fair and try this thing for yourself:

Finally: A Handy Nutritional Guide to Fair Food [Infographic]

deep-fried-oreos

In 2010, President Barack Obama signed a legislation requiring restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to show calorie counts next to food items on menus and menu boards. Despite the health law, most local county fairs fail to display nutritional information — probably because they don’t want to scare off customers with the calorie-packed truth, and many booths simply aren’t under the jurisdiction of that law.

Thus, we’re left to guess at how many calories deep-fried Oreos contain, and how much sodium a giant Turkey leg is coated with (1,900 milligrams). Thanks to this colorful new photo-infographic, we’re now privy to the nutritional makeup of some of the most popular food items available on this summer’s fair circuit:

Deep Fried Trix and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal, Because This is America

In our country’s never-ending quest to deep fry every food imaginable, and in our never-ending quest here at Foodbeast to make sure the world knows where and how to get all these fried goodies, we’ve come across some special ones today: Deep fried Trix and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.

Brought to you by Chicken Charlie’s in San Diego, CA, a new level of deep fried food has been reached, again. Yes, it is the same Chicken Charlie’s that revealed last year that it is possible to deep fry Kool-Aid.

Chicken Charlie’s has again created a buzz so far at the San Diego County Fair, so much so that the guys over at the Orange County and L.A. County Fairs already have mouths watering over pictures of these fried morning treats.

It is typical to see all things fried at a fair, but Chicken Charlie’s has built a reputation of showing off eye-popping fried meals that leave one wondering, ‘What more can be fried?’

The San Diego County Fair will run up until July 4, while the OC Fair will begin its festivities July 13 through Aug. 12. After that, Chicken Charlie’s will take its frying skills to the L.A. County Fair Aug. 31, to Sept. 31.

There was a day when frying chicken was enough to satisfy the palate. Those days are long gone, my friend.
