KFC’s Permanent Launch Of Secret Recipe Fries Replaces Iconic Potato Wedges

Last year, select Kentucky Fried Chicken locations in California, Indiana, and Detroit began testing the Colonel’s new Secret Recipe Fries. The new side option was named for featuring all of the Colonel’s 11 herbs and spices in its cooking. This week, Secret Recipe Fries gets a permanent spot on KFC’s national menu, but it comes at a somber bit of a cost.

The Colonel is discontinuing its iconic potato wedges, reports Business Insider as the Secret Recipe Fries take their place as a permanent potato proxy for consumers.

I’ve called a few stores to confirm, hoping to God that there were a few wayward wedges left to order before it was too late. Alas, a fruitless wedge-less endeavor.

Look for the Secret Recipe Fries now at KFC locations nationwide.

KFC Will Be Selling Plant-Based Chicken Nuggets In China Next Week

On Monday, KFC announced that it will be selling vegan chicken nuggets in China from April 28 to April 30, as it continues its expansion into the plant-based market.

The fast food giant said that the nuggets will be sold in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, and will be manufactured by Cargill Ltd.

This comes after extremely successful plant-based product testing in multiple countries, which showed enough consumer demand to expand the dishes into more locations in the US. Notably, the company is using a different manufacturer for the Chinese launch, as they tapped Beyond Meat in the US and Lightlife in Canada, respectively.

This isn’t the only way in which the brand’s Chinese release differs. Customers will have to purchase a pre-sale voucher for 1.99 yuan that entitles them to five chicken pieces, according to the company’s official Weibo account.

This is an interesting path to take, as KFC surely looks to avoid the expansive line that occurred during the high profile Atlanta launch of the company’s plant-based fried chicken. It’s reminiscent of the pre-sale lotteries and raffles that many sneaker companies have done to avoid real-life lines and online crashes during hyped shoe releases.

We’ll surely be keeping our eyes peeled for any visuals of the new nuggets, as well as any potential plant-based nugget voucher resale market, so check back soon.

KFC’s Wild New Chicken & Donuts Are Now Available Nationwide

This past fall KFC teased a wild new dish that was gloriously unashamed of its own decadence: a chicken & donuts sandwich. Tested only at select locations in Virginia and Pennsylvania at the time, the truly American combo gained enough positive feedback to finally be considered for national release. So come February 24, for a limited time only, KFC will be offering this new chicken & donuts combo at all participating locations.

For those curious about the deets, it’s literally all in the name: Kentucky Fried Chicken & Donuts. Sure it sounds like the most simple sandwich ever, but simple don’t mean stupid in this case. Did Dan Flavin achieve notoriety through complex and busy art? Surely not. A hot, freshly glazed donut sandwiching some juicy fried chicken sounds like a winner in any scenario.

So come this Monday the 24th, you can step out and get you some KFC Fried Chicken & Donuts, a duo that guarantees as much instant gratification as Kobe and Shaq highlights.

KFC Expands Vegan Fried Chicken To 70 Locations In The US

Last year Kentucky Fried Chicken announced that they partnered up with Beyond Meat to offer some plant-based alternatives to fried chicken. For one day, the vegan protein was sold at a KFC in Atlanta and the launch did gangbusters in numbers.

The restaurant sold out of the plant-based meat in less than five hours after opening its doors, with lines wrapped around the block with people waiting to get their vegan fix.

According to LiveKindly, KFC is bringing the Beyond Meat back to restaurants in 70 locations. This includes select cities such as Charlotte, Belmont, Salisbury, Lincolnton, Mint Hill, Davidson, and Nashville.

For anyone who missed the initial launch, KFC plans to expand this release even longer than the single day. The Beyond Chicken will be available from Feb. 2 through Feb. 23 while supplies last. During this time, you can order your vegan chicken with a dipping sauce or tossed in Honey BBQ, Buffalo, or Nashville Hot Sauce. They come in either 4-pieces, 12-pieces, or as combo options on the menu.

KFC Now Offers Fully Sauced Chicken Wings

KFC made some noise earlier this summer when it announced it would introduce plant-based wings with Beyond Meat, but now their actual chicken wings are making a bit of noise, albeit not quite as loudly.

KFC is introducing a new set of fully sauced, bone-in wings to its menu, which should make sports fans happy.

While they’ve had variations of wings in the past, including a spicy dry rub and even Honey BBQ, those come and go as limited time offers.

This is their first stab at a true saucy wing lineup, and the three flavors they are debuting are Honey BBQ, Buffalo, and Nashville Hot.

KFC has been pretty active of late, making waves with the above mentioned plant-based wings, but also debuting a Cheeto’s-crusted chicken sandwich, chicken tacos, fries (No, they’ve never had fries before. Trust us) and even a fried chicken and doughnut sandwich.

Their new wing announcement pales in comparison to the other items, but feels like a fundamental right coming from a the biggest chicken chain in the world.

KFC Is Testing Secret Recipe FRIES In Select Locations

Photo: Peter Pham

I’m not ashamed to admit that Kentucky Fried Chicken’s potato wedges have hit the spot on more than one occasion when I’m trying to get my fried potato fix. While I’ll always pick fries over wedges, KFC hasn’t really given consumers the option of fries. At least, not until now.

The fast food fried chicken chain has begun testing SECRET RECIPE FRIES at select locations across the United States.

KFC’s new fries are apparently seasoned the same way as their prolific fried chicken — with 11 herbs and spices. I drove out to the nearest test location that offered them and can attest that they do have notes of the Colonel’s secret recipe, although I would have loved a more assertive presence of its flavor. Still, not bad. Coming from a textural standpoint, they’re not too different from Popeyes’ Cajun fries.

I wonder if Popeye’s recent fried chicken sandwich breaking the Internet has guided KFC to shaking up their menu? Rumor has it that these fries may be edging out KFC’s iconic potato wedges.

You can order the fries three ways: Small (in a paper bag), Individual (in a cardboard fry container), or Large (which comes in a large box). So far, these fries have been spotted in California, Indiana, and Michigan.
