Exploring The Taste: Healthy Junk Serves Up The Best Vegan Comfort Food

Working at Foodbeast for so long, it’s hard to pass up the occasional juicy cheeseburger. However, occasional juicy cheeseburgers tend to add up and next thing you know you’re on your way to morbid obesity. We can’t all have the metabolism of a competitive eater.

In our new series Exploring the Taste, we take a look at this spot in downtown Anaheim called Healthy Junk. The restaurant takes popular comfort foods, like burgers, and recreates them using healthier ingredients. This includes vegan and gluten-free options.

Check out the first episode of Exploring the Taste as we visit Healthy Junk and speak to the owner Lynda Santos.

Watch This Guy Juice An Entire McDonald’s Meal Then DRINK It

Screen Shot 2016-06-20 at 10.52.04 AMThis guy posted a YouTube video juicing fast food and it got really weird. He juiced (well, sludged) a couple of McDonalds burgers, fries and a soda, then drank a full glass of the brown sludge.

I was completely prepared to watch him throw it up and, to be honest, I’m still surprised that he didn’t. As far as juicing videos go, this is pretty entertaining. Note their use of slo-mo and highly appropriate music selection.

All in all, it’s just one of those things that you don’t want to watch, but you just can’t stop watching. It was posted 4 days ago and 239,000 people have already watched it.

They’re taking requests for more Junk Juice recipes, and at the end of the video, suggest several other concoctions that sound as nasty as this one.

Mexico Surpasses United States in Obesity: Approves Junk Food Tax

Bad news for our friends south of the border. Mexico’s lower house of Congress is following in the steps of New York Mayor Bloomberg by recently approving new taxes on junk food in an effort to reduce their consumption. The increased costs on higher calorie and sugary snacks were part of a larger bill that included additional fiscal changes and are likely to get passed into law.

With one of the world’s highest obesity rates, Mexico is being met with support from health experts and opposition from small business owners. Mom and Pop shops rely on soft drink sales to stay open and will likely have to close their doors if their customers are deterred from indulging in their favorite treats.

According to the legislation high-calorie foods defined as “those providing 275 calories or more per 100 grams, at 5% of the ticketed price and chewing gum at 16%. Soft drinks would go up in price about 8 cents per liter.” Mexico recently bumped the United States into the #2 spot with 32.8% of adults considered obese vs. 31.8% in the US.

Approval of the tax package, including the junk food tax, would generate nearly $20 billion in revenue for Mexico’s national treasury.
