Are Jackfruit’s Health Benefits Enough To Justify Substituting It For Pork?

Photo: So Delicious

Alternatives to meat are very in right now. One of them that’s gaining traction lately is jackfruit. But should you go for it? Here are the jackfruit health benefits to know about.

Maybe you’ve heard news about jackfruit lately as a viable, tasty and a quite similar alternative to meat. Pizza Hut has just announced that it’s replacing pulled pork with jackfruit on one of their pizzas. But are the jackfruit health benefits good enough for you to start using it? Let’s find out right now.

You might have seen some jackfruit around your grocery store. It’s pretty big, green, and it looks very similar to a sea urchin. People have been using jackfruit in recipes for pulled pork sandwiches, tacos, chili, and so on.

Jackfruit is part of the Moraceae plant family, which means that it’s related to figs, mulberry, and breadfruit. Its taste is mildly sweet and fruity. Where does it come from? It’s been used for centuries in countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and India, where it’s the absolute star in a lot of dishes. Chief among them are desserts and amazing breakfast meals.

Jackfruit Health Benefits - Is This Vegan Meat Worth It?
You can eat the pods and the seeds of the jackfruit, raw or cooked!

When you tear into a jackfruit, you can eat the flesh, which can also be described as fruit pods, but the seeds of the fruit are also edible. And the great news is that you can eat them both raw and cooked! How’s that for convenient?

The main jackfruit health benefits

I always tend to be skeptical when it comes to buzzed-about food items. I always want to know if they are as good as the marketing makes it seem. So I went into a deep dive of research. The results… Well, read them for yourself and see what I’ve found out.

Jackfruit is low in calories, but it also doesn’t have any fat and sodium. It has plenty of vitamin A and vitamin C, and a large load of potassium, which helps regulate your blood pressure. Add to that a healthy heap of magnesium, manganese, riboflavin, and copper and it all sounds pretty good, right?

Another perk? It’s also pretty rich in fiber, which keeps you satisfied long after you eat it. It doesn’t have as much protein like meat or fish, though – only 2 grams per serving as opposed to 6-7 in an ounce of meat or fish.

Jackfruit Health Benefits - Is This Vegan Meat Worth It?
If you are just starting out with jackfruit, try using it in a salad and go from there.

All of the antioxidants in jackfruit may help prevent inflammation but also lower it. They also lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Vitamins A and C may help boost your immunity and protect the healthy glow of your skin.

The roots and extracts of jackfruit have been used in Indian and Sri Lankan medicine to treat ulcers, upset stomachs, and asthma. The scientific evidence on that is not enough, yet.

And if you have trouble sleeping, you might want to eat some jackfruit before bed, because the magnesium and iron in it help improve the quality of your nighttime rest.

What else should you know about jackfruit?

Jackfruit has the ability to absorb the flavors of the foods, herbs, and spices it’s cooked with, which makes it a great ingredient for vegetarian or vegan meals. But also, as opposed to almonds, for instance, jackfruit is actually a sustainable food, because it’s drought and pest resistant. One tree can produce about 200 fruits per year and some of them end up being as large as 100 pounds if you can believe it!

Pizza Hut’s New Vegan Pizza Is Loaded With JACKFRUIT

Photo courtesy of Pizza Hut UK

With each New Year comes the resolution to eat slightly healthier, which likely means cutting back on pizza toppings like pepperoni, bacon, and double sausage.

For those looking to avoid meat, Pizza Hut locations in the United Kingdom have launched a new vegan pizza they’re calling Vegan Jack ‘N’ Ch**se. Customers will find this pie topped with a vegan non-dairy alternative to cheese, tomato sauce, BBQ jackfruit, sweet corn, red onions, peppers, and a finish of BBQ drizzle.

The pizza is the newest edition to Pizza Hut’s vegan pie line, joining their Vegan Veggie and Vegan Margherita.

This may not be merely a seasonal addition, however, as Pizza Hut UK says they’ll make the item a permanent fixture on their menu if 10,000 vegan pizzas are sold by the end of their Veganuary (January) promotion.

Really wish Pizza Hut offered this here in the United States as a vegan option as well. Well-seasoned jackfruit is a delicious alternative for meat.

5 Awesome New Foods To Try At The LA County Fair

It’s time for the LA County Fair once again. Our entire Foodbeast crew got a sneak peek at some of the newest offerings from this year’s veritable fried food expo, held at the Pomona Fairgrounds.

We’ve got returning favorites like bacon-wrapped fried chicken, deep-fried pizza, deep fried avocado bombs, funnels cakes, and many other dishes that took the shallow plunge into a pool of searing oil.

Check out our Facebook live stream to get an up-close look at fair foods the little devil on your shoulder would shy away from.

Deep-fried Hot Sauce

This is Frank’s RedHot Sauce mixed with some batter, balled, and deep-fried. The hot sphere of solidified sauce is served with a spicy ranch and a jalapeño pepper. With its incredible kick, we see it as a fiery hush puppy. If you’re not a fan of buffalo-style heat, however, this is definitely not for you.

Bacon S’mores on a stick

Imagine the best s’mores you’ve ever made during a childhood campout. Got it? OK, now let’s deep fry it and throw some bacon crumbs on that bad boy. Now, to actually see that dream come to life, hit up Chicken Charlie’s and feast on his newest dessert that takes marshmallows and fries them up in a corn dog batter. The sweet entry is then topped with chocolate drizzle and chopped bacon to stake its claim as the most intense item at this year’s fair.

We LOVE anything that has to do with fried chicken and waffles, though it can be tough getting both components onto your fork. The best part of this year’s Chicken-in-Waffles is that the iconic dish is everything’s fused together in one majestic, hand-held treat.

Bacon-Wrapped Pork Belly Corn Dogs

Pork belly fans’ already-clogged hearts will skip a dangerous beat with this one. The culprit here is a piece of pork belly that’s wrapped in bacon, coated in batter, and deep-fried like a corn dog. This fatty tour de force inspired many heated bacon discussions.

Jackfruit Vegan Tacos

We were shocked to find that our favorite dish at the fair this year was actually something vegan! These shredded, seasoned jackfruit tacos are topped with a vegan chipotle mayonnaise and coleslaw. Completely plant-based and indistinguishable from its porky counterpart, these tacos just might win over some carnivorous fans.

The Best Food At The LA Fair Is Actually A Vegan Taco

For a food lover, going to the fair can be a blast. Everything’s either deep-fried or wrapped in bacon. However, eating all that fried stuff really takes a toll on your body. That’s why we were delighted to discover the best tasting thing at this year’s LA County Fair was, in fact, a vegan dish.

This year, a booth called Plant Food For People shocked us with one of their dishes: a carnitas-style taco made with shredded jackfruit. It was arguably the tastiest dish there.

We tried a bite and honestly could not tell the difference between the taco and its porky counterpart. The shredded jackfruit are specially seasoned and thrown on the grill. Afterwards, the jackfruit is dressed up with a vegan Chipotle mayonnaise and coleslaw.

After ingesting a ton of fried foods on premises, this was a welcome surprise.

Owners Jeremy and Genise Castaneda said that they plan on opening a stand in Venice sometime in the near future. For now, you can find them slanging these delectable vegan jackfruit tacos at this year’s LA County Fair.

Vitamin Water: B-Relaxed (Guava-Jackfruit)

“Modern life got you all geeked up? With our flying cars, robot butlers, and moving sidewalks, it’s hard to catch a few stress-free moments. Thankfully, b-relaxed is packed with theanine to help you relax and deal with all the technochaos out there. Just watch out for those elevator rides with claustrophobic samurai. Some things never change.” (Thx Vitaminwater)
