Is This Ham Leg Pillow the Adult Version of a Stuffed Animal Pig?

Confession time: I sleep with a stuffed animal. Gosig was an Ikea clearance rack pickup who quickly became the best body pillow a man could ask for. The fake dog physique is skinny and makes for a pillow shape that isn’t overstuffed like a regular body pillow, but the huge golden faux-triever cranium provides a comfortable headrest during slumber. My dog even thinks he is real sometimes, and once in a moment of boredom I stole him from behind my back and arranged him like a dog crouching and ready to pounce – perhaps hoping he would come to life.

Venezuelan artist Alejandro Kobiakov is taking on the realistic plush toy from a slightly different angle with his piece “Jamón ibérico de bellota” – a stuffed ham pillow that is a little too realistic for full sleepy-time comfort. What cute, cuddly name do you give to a dismembered, seasoned, and cooked ham leg? What happens when you wake up, still half asleep, and mistake it for food?

The pillow runs for the equivalent of $22, but unfortunately isn’t available to US buyers.

Love of Pork Might be Genetics Based, Studies Show

There are tons of different types of food out there in the world, and a good slab of it is meat. But have you ever wondered why carnivores out there enjoy the taste of pork so much while others look upon you with pure disgust as you suck back every last strip of bacon on your plate?

Research conducted by Duke University Medical Center, Monell Chemical Senses Center and three Norwegian institutions show that it might be a genetic trait.

They conducted an experiment where they requested that a group of people with different levels of a particular odor receptor gene to take a whiff and a couple bites of certain pork products and rate them. The goal was to gauge sensitivity to androstenone, a testosterone-like steroid found in male pigs.

Those in the study group that had a specific variation of the gene that was insensitive to androstenone, said they enjoyed the taste and the smell of the pork samples more so than the others in the group with a different variation of the receptor gene. While other members of the study, with a more sensitive receptor to androstenone, found that the pork products were disgusting.

It was concluded that meat that contained less androstenone will be more likely to sell better in markets and butcher shops. So here’s something to think about next time your stomach starts rumbling: Do you like ham? Are you fond of ribs? Do you have a unnaturally unhealthy obsession for bacon? Well that hankering may not be entirely on you. It could be your genes talking.

Homemade Cream Cheese Pizza

Utilizing a Betty Crocker Pizza Crust mix as the base, our friend Kate has pieced together this easy recipe for a Cream Cheese Pizza. Topped with cream cheese, ham, mozzarella, Parmesan, onions and baby portobello mushrooms, the pizza comes together with a sweet level of pizazz that makes it look like a fancier chef had made it (no offense if you are actually a fancier chef…).

The B.O.S.S.: the Big Oversized Sub Sandwich

Our friend Nick usually hits the foodie community with a FOODBEAST calibur meal at LEAST once a week. Today, he gives us a look at the B.O.S.S. sandwich, aka: the Big Oversized Sub Sandwich. This badboy is sold in the deli area of Pick ‘n Save grocery stores, weighs in at 2.5 lbs. and is piled long and high with ham, turkey, salami, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes for a measly $5.99.

Being the beast that he is, Nick decided the sandwich needed some moisture. With that in mind, he decided to add a layer of sunny side up eggs and a generous guacamole spread for both color and texture. Oh yeah, did we mention he torched this badboy in one sitting!? Eat on Nick.
