Let’s be honest about Greek yogurt — it’s pretty boring stuff. Why else would companies make a dozen flavored ones? Staring at a spoonful is about as exciting as watching our nails dry, so we are on a mission to incorporate this good-for-you snack into some of our favorite meals.

You heard us. A dish that can be enjoyed any time of day, hot or cold, pizza is our fifth food group. And get this: there are two-ingredient recipes out there. Two! Make your own next time and throw a DIY pizza party. Doing so will allow you to delegate purchasing beer to everybody else.

Dessert is how we celebrate the best of times and the worst of times, so converting it into a treat is a no-brainer. Blend with chocolate almond milk, and locate those popsicle molds. Ah, now chilled, hand-held happiness is within your reach. Bonus: you’ll have extras to share (or not).

If there’s a way to make flapjacks good for you, we are all in. Assembling this stack with our designated ingredient makes for some protein-packed perfection. Think it’s too healthy? Bring a handful of chocolate chips into the mix. Now pass the maple syrup.

When in doubt, we say craft a party dish. Find us someone who says no to avocado or ranch (allergies excluded), and we’ll slap some sense into them. Greek yogurt’s tart attitude plays well with others, making it the perfect meeting place for raw veggies, chips, and maybe on that chicken sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch.

Of all the pasta indulgences, we avoided this one forever once we learned how much fat this sauce contained… until now. Sans flour, heavy cream, or eggs, substituting with this single item makes up for a trio of richness that’d otherwise go straight to your hips. With so few ingredients, we suggest using some quality Parmesan and pasta. Oooh, and grilled shrimp. Now what time can we come over for dinner?

Greek yogurt on its own is “blah” until layered with tasty delights and stashed in the fridge until morning. Add oats, spice, milk, yogurt and whatever sings to you (we’re fans of flaxseed and protein powder). Then either shake it (if you’ve got a lid) or give a thorough stir to get things mixed up. When it’s time for brekkie, this concoction will provide that punch of energy that’ll last longer than those donuts.

We’re squeezing in a slaw for good measure, because veggies! You might count lettuce leaf and tomato slice in a burger as “salad,” but we feel less guilty with a recipe including carrots, cabbage and green onions. Quick to throw together, cool down a spicy burger with ‘em, or have it accompany that next batch of fried chicken. You’ll be thanking us for that bonus crunch and tang to your meal.

Greek, Shmeak – Go-GURT Protein Now Exists

Either Go-GURT was pretty much the best part of your childhood or you grew up in one of “those families.” Unfortunately, like with most other juvenile glories, we eventually had to forego our precious saliva-varnished portable yogurt tubes in favor of more grown-up fare. Greek things. With honey and antibiotics. Fage.

Luckily, Yoplait’s newest brand extension could give you a very solid, somewhat unnecessary reason (because let’s face it, you don’t need a reason) to enjoy your old friend Go-GURT in your big boy pants. Introducing: Go-GURT Protein.

Each cream-filled, 6-inch plastic tube contains 5 grams of protein per 2.25 ounce serving, or two times that of the leading kid’s yogurt, according to Go-GURT. For the record, a serving of Fage has 23 grams; Chobani has 18. But do those guys come in Strawberry Superstar, Mighty Fruit Punch, Berry Extreme and Burstin’ Berry Lemonade? Are they portable? Do they look good with your Wolverine lunch pail? Didn’t think so.

Go-GURT protein is currently available for $2.99 per 8-pack in the North Atlantic, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Central northeast parts of the United States. Additional distribution is scheduled for October.

Starbucks Poised to Make Overpriced, Overbranded, Over-Instagrammed Greek Yogurt a Reality

Is it safe to call Starbucks the “Facebook” of coffee shops yet?

As in, we’re all over it, we all complain about being over it, yet we keep coming back. This time, because the loosely-interpreted “coffee” giant has just decided to make its own line of Greek yogurt and for some reason, we’re just going to let it. Because we’re suckers. Caffeine and pretty branding-addicted suckers.

The result of a partnership with Danone, the makers of Dannon, Starbucks’ new yogurt will officially be called “Evolution Fresh, inspired by Dannon,” and will be available in Starbucks stores by 2014 and major grocery stores by 2015.

USA Today reports: “Starbucks’ foray into yogurt is part of a strategic plan devised several years ago by Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to [take over the world] evolve the nation’s leading coffee chain into a better-for-you brand. Schultz wants Starbucks products to be as frequently purchased at a grocery store as a Starbucks store.”

Let’s just hope by then, Instagram will have gone the way of Myspace and formspring, ‘cause ain’t no one got time for pre-teens taking selfies in the dairy aisle.

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day 2013 on April 9th

In a world-wide promotion that’s been happening since 1979 when Ben & Jerry’s celebrated their first year in the biz, Ben & Jerry’s will be giving away free ice cream on April 9th, 2013. Yes, that means you can swoop up a cone of any of their popular classics — Phish Food, Chunky Monkey, etc. — or even try something new, like the Liz Lemon Greek Frozen Yogurt.

Personally, I’m all about mixing the S’mores with the Crème Brûlée. Think about that for a moment. Sigh, April never looked so deelish.

TCBY and Ben & Jerry’s Introduce ‘Greek Frozen Yogurt’ Items

As the Greek Yogurt trend continues to grow, it seems both ice cream and frozen yogurt chains are wanting a piece of the action.

This past Thursday, frozen Yogurt chain TCBY rolled out a debut flavor of their Greek Frozen Yogurt varieties: Honey Vanilla. The debut flavor has eight grams of protein, 100 calories and zero grams of fat per four-ounce serving. The Utah-based chain notes that more flavors of their Greek Frozen Yogurt are slated to arrive this summer.

Ben & Jerry’s also took this week to introduce four new Greek Yogurt varieties to their frozen treats menu. Along for the trendy ride includes: Strawberry Shortcake, Raspberry Fudge Chunk, Banana Peanut Butter and Blueberry Vanilla Graham. All of these flavors are higher in protein and lower in calories than the chain’s regular ice cream.

We caught wind last month that Ben & Jerry’s flavors would be toying with Greek frozen yogurt, and the expansion seems to make sense at a time when Greek Yogurt sales have risen over 2500% over the past 5 years.

2012 seems to be the year for Greek Yogurt, starting off prominently with Oikos brand buying some Super Bowl commercial airtime and now making some serious waves with notable chains such as TCBY and Ben & Jerry’s.

It will be interesting to see how these flavors are accepted in a frozen format, and see how long this “trend” continues to flourish.

Ben & Jerry’s to Release Greek Frozen Yogurt Line

Ben & Jerry’s has hinted at a tentative new addition to their ever-expanding ice cream empire: a new line of Greek frozen yogurt.

Although the ice cream conglomerate still remains hush-hush about the product launch, reports from The Huffington Post indicate that the new offering has already trickled down to a few select supermarket chains. Delectable flavors such as Banana Peanut Butter, Raspberry Fudge Chunk, Blackberry Vanilla Graham Cracker, Strawberry Shortcake, and tried-and-true vanilla are expected to line grocery aisles soon.

The strategic expansion makes sense: over the last 5 years, Greek yogurt sales have risen over 2500%.
