Gratuitous Food Porn: Sweet Gourmet Popcorn

Who could hate the giant, decorative tins of gourmet popcorn which seemingly sprout out of nowhere in every grocery store and Trader Joe’s and mail-order catalog around this time of year? Seriously, these things were doing the whole sweet and savory thing before it was even a thing — yellow buttery popcorn snuggled up right next to its vivid cheesy cousins and sassier caramel twins. If you’re lucky, you sometimes find a “zebra” batch, caramel kernels dressed in white and dark chocolate drizzles. This holiday season, if you happen to be food-minded, and/or strapped for cash, consider whipping up a few batches of any of these sweet gourmet popcorn recipes as gifts instead. Trust us, it’s way better than another gift card.

Gratuitous Food Porn: Insect Edition

Fried Spider header

Andrew Zimmern pops them like candy and they have an entire cookbook designed around them but they’re considered taboo for modern day consumption. We’re talking insects. Yes, those creepy crawlies out in your backyard are indeed edible but chances are after the age of five you stopped trying to eat them willingly. Insects are actually eaten pretty frequently around the world but here in the US we get freaked out at the idea. There’s a high nutritional value to these little buggers but the only time we ever see these pests is at the bottom of a tequila bottle or immortalized in a lollipop. Besides gag gifts, insects can actually be transformed into some odd yet palatable dishes.

Gratuitous Food Porn: Thanksgivukkah Edition

Eat up, guys. The next Thanksgivukkah (the happy occasion when Thanksgiving and Hanukkah happen to fall on the same day) isn’t for another 70,000 years. Besides, let’s be real, the turkey – stuffing – mashed potatoes combo gets a little old after the 20th (or, you know, 60th) year in a row. This year, swap the tried and trues for latke pumpkin pies, turkey sufganiyots, and challah stuffing in what could be the most inspired culinary mash-up to come out of 2013 (sorry cronut). Happy Thanksgivukkah everybody! L’chaim!

*Warning: not everything on this list is guaranteed kosher.

Gratuitous Food Porn: Thai Food Edition

thaileader

This fall, cozy up with a different kind of spice. Simultaneously prismatic and comforting, Thai is one Asian cuisine which, despite its ubiquity, hasn’t gone completely the way of Panda Express. Which is amazing. Best served family-style, these eats are meant to be enjoyed either in a dimly lit, family-owned restaurant, or made in your own kitchen. From the sore throat-healing sour soup tom yum to the wildly under-appreciated pad thai alternative, pad see ew, it’s time you rested your eyes on some of the world’s prettiest and most nuanced dishes. We bet you’ll soon feel all warm and fuzzy.

Gratuitous Food Porn: Vegan Edition

Gratiutious Food Porn Vegan Header
The vegan lifestyle has become crazy popular in recent years with proponents advocating it as “kind” lifestyle. With restrictions on animal products of all kinds it seems crazy to a carnivore like myself that sustaining a vegan diet could be possible, I mean c’mon, you can’t even have cheese. What kind of life is that? After much deliberation and a considerable amount of time searching through vegan food blogs I managed to round up alternative recipes that even I would eat. Some of these recipes sound so delicious that you might not even miss the meat or dairy. Maybe. Let’s not get too crazy. Either way this post goes out to the vegans out there livin’ that kind life and helping to save those animals one meal at a time.
