A Super Simple Guide to Designing Your Wedding Cake, from Top to Bottom [Infographic]

wedding cake

There’s an infographic for everything these days – choosing a flavor of wine, how to make a pizza, even a periodic table of alcohol and a Thanksgiving etiquette infographic exist. So it should come as no surprise there are infographics on how to help you build your dream wedding cake.

The infographic guides you on choosing a wedding cake, from shape to flavors to design.

You start out basic with the general shape – round, square, heart – and then move on to type and filling where things get a bit more complicated.  From fruitcake to cheesecake to chocolate, the possibilities are endless. The infographic does provides some guidance as to which filling goes best with what you’re doing; for example, if you’re having a summer wedding go with a zingy lemon sorbet. Want to be luxurious? Go for Belgian chocolate.  Next, decorations range from icing and gems to shimmer and piping. Last but not least, cake toppers — an actual photograph of the two of you made out of something edible or the infamous plastic figurines that are meant to look like you and your betrothed. Take your pick.

As Franck in Father of the Bride explains, it’s the cake that more often determines what kind of wedding that you’re going to end up having. So check out the infographic, and choose the cake wisely.

Gotta Eat ‘Em All: PokeCakes!

h0n3y5un5h1n3 (leet/1337 speak for “honeysunshine”) over at Instructables has done the worship-able, combining childhood Pokememories with cake. Fantastic. A bit involved, perhaps, but fantastic.

Granted, these Pokeball Layer Cakes are not easy. Most of us would give up after Step 1: Bake Your Cakes (not, she stresses, from mix). But she keeps going, despite the special molds, cake-fillings, malleable fondant x3, AND painted tiny hearts. Sure, you may be thinking “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

But look at the finished product! Right in the childhood, folks. Right in the childhood.

Full instructions here.

Superbowl Delicious: Football-Shaped Whoopie Pies

I know, I know. I’m a disgrace to women everywhere. Guys, there are lots of girls who care more about the game than the snacks and the commercials on Superbowl Tuesday (that’s a joke, I know the Superbowl is on Saturday). Don’t judge them according to my new obsession with these little football cookies that make me feel like a real fan.

Great, now that that’s out of the way: Check out these football whoopie pies! They’re adorable and delicious, and they’ll make you feel like a real fan!

Food blogger Sarah Sprague of Make Merry Events edited this Bon Appetít recipe for pumpkin whoopie pies with maple-marshmallow cream filling by using dark brown sugar instead of golden, and sifting a quarter cup of cocoa powder into the dry mix. A few extra steps, and voila, your pumpkin batter is football-colored.

Meanwhile, an egg-shaped baking tin and a little creative icing will carry you the rest of the way to these adorable football munchies.

Check out the full recipe here while I try to fake my way to a football-related joke to close. Just give me a second.

Pumpkin Muffins with Spiced Cream Cheese Filling

I know Thanksgiving is well over and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, but I had to bring back my love of pumpkin flavored baked goods. What you are drooling over is not your typical pumpkin pie, in fact, it is a pumpkin muffin. Typically, we would usually pair this treat with some sort of ice cream or cool whip… but not these bad boys! They are stuffed with spiced cream cheese filling. Power dessert? I think so! (Thx HealthyFoodForLiving)
