Study Finds That Unhealthy Diets May Be A Bigger Cause Of Death Than Tobacco

Unhealthy diets get over 11 million people killed every year, and yeah, those deaths are pretty much preventable, according to a new major study.

This is not a drill! Your unhealthy diet could lead you to an early grave, since our diets lacking in nutrition are responsible for more deaths every year than smoking, per The Guardian! Researchers are saying that it’s not about junk food per se and all of the sugar and unhealthy fats we tend to consume way too much of these days. No, the problem is that our diets are severely lacking in nutritious foods and all kinds of vitamins and minerals that are paramount in our lives.

This particular cited research is part of the Global Burden of Disease Study by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle. It was published in the Lancet medical journal.

Unhealthy diets lead to preventable deaths

The same study says that one in five deaths are preventable if we include more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes in our daily meals. Otherwise, in the absence of nutrition, the biggest culprits for untimely deaths are heart attacks and strokes, but also cancers and type 2 diabetes. The research says that eating too few fruits and vegetables and sprinkling way too much salt in our meals leads to all of that. Not to mention that by making these changes in your food routine, you could shave off two-thirds of the possible years of disabilities that can be attributed to unhealthy diets.

Unhealthy Diets Kill More People than Tobacco, Study Says
Pulses like beans are some of the healthy foods you need in your life.

“Our findings show that suboptimal diet is responsible for more deaths than any other risks globally, including tobacco smoking, highlighting the urgent need for improving human diet across nations,” the researchers warn.

Their conclusions are that world health initiatives have focused constantly on cutting sugar, salt, and fats from daily diets when the best solution would be to advocate for the inclusion of nutritious foods, as many of them as possible.

In 2017, unhealthy diets were responsible for 10.9 million deaths, or 22 percent of all deaths among adults, while tobacco was held responsible for 8 million deaths among the same demographic, in the same time frame.

Dieting is an integral part of our society today. Fad diets are introduced regularly and promoted by everyone from celebrities to your neighbors. For the most part these diets provide a quick and easy — though usually not sustainable — solution to our weight problems. What people don’t realize is that the body can only take so much before you’re put in danger. Here are 5 instances of extreme dieting that went too far.

Soy Sauce Cleanse

An internet hoax gone too far left a woman brain dead after consuming a liter of soy sauce in 2 hours. The soy sauce cleanse claims that because water flows towards sodium in the body it would drive toxin filled water to her colon and flush it out. YouTube medical star Bernard of Chubbyemu reported that she drank so much sodium it sucked the water from her brain, muscles, and organs. This led to irreversible brain damage as a result of acute hypernatremia — a high concentration of sodium in the blood. 

Dehydration Diet

18 year old girl Jessica Lindsay died after dehydrating her body to cut weight before a Muay Thai kickboxing fight in Australia. It is common in combat sports for fighters to attempt to cut weight before a fight so they can compete in a lower weight division. Saunas and sweat suits, as well as high intensity exercise, are used to rid the body of excess water weight. In Lindsay’s case, she was running with her 14-year old sister when she collapsed from dehydration. She was then rushed to intensive care where tests showed her heart racing at 189BPMs. Unfortunately, it was too late for doctors to do anything to save her and her organs shut down one by one. A report conducted by the California State Athletic Commission in 2016 reported that extreme weight cutting is linked to concussions and traumatic brain injury. Lindsay was the second athlete to die in 2017 due to weight cutting following Scottish professional Jordan Coe who died in Thailand. Since her death, Lindsay’s parents have been campaigning against weight-cutting in Australia, resulting in Australia’s combat sports authority, WA Combat Sports Commission, drafting a strategy to regulate the practice.

Water, Ginger, and Slaps

Chinese practitioner Hong Chi Xao and parents of a 12-year-old boy are currently facing charges for forcing the young child to undergo a slapping and stretching workshop that was meant to cure him of his diabetes. In disturbing detail it was revealed that the child was forced to drink nothing but water and ginger for three days before an intense stretching and slapping session. His parents stopped administering his insulin injection for 5 days leading him to vomit black and yellow substances as a result of diabetic ketoacidosis which ultimately resulted in his death. Xiao claimed that this was toxins leaving the body and that this alternative medicine, known as paida-lajin, would “activate the body’s self-healing powers and unlock energy channels capable of curing cancer and diabetes” reported Guardian News. Both the parents and Xiao are pleading not guilty and the trial continues on.

Vegan Children

Veganism is growing in popularity and for the most part promotes an overall healthy lifestyle that can provide plenty of health benefits. This is a decision adults can make on their own and and adapt their lifestyles to with little problems. On the other hand, children are far more susceptible to illnesses as their development depends on certain nutrients. One Glasgow, Ireland couple faced questioning when it was discovered that their 12-year-old daughter had the spine of an 80-year old woman. Since birth the child was never allowed to consume meat or dairy, thus causing a  severe form of rickets. Rickets are caused by a lack of Vitamin D that softens the bones and results in fractures and deformities. Dr. Faisal Ahmed of Gasglow’s Royal Hospital for Children told The Telegraph “that the risks involved in forcing a child to adhere to a vegan diet ought to be made clear.”

Ma-Pi Diet

Italian macrobiotic guru, Mario Pianesi, is under investigation for allegations that his wife’s death was caused by him putting her on an extreme form of the Ma-Pi Diet. The unorthodox diet consists primarily of carbohydrates, whole grains, and vegetables while eliminating animal fat, protein, and added sugar. His wife, Gabriella Monti, died in 2001 after suffering from acute hepatitis caused by aflatoxins, a fungal poison sometimes found in grains or nuts, reported The Guardian. Thousands of people are known to follow Pianesi’s diet almost religiously and he has also been accused of manipulating people to avoid the outside world and behave as slaves to him and his diet. His wife Gabriella suffered from a stroke and instead of seeking help, Pianesi kept her hidden at home and attempted to cure her with the Ma-Pi diet. Allegedly, Pianesi wished to keep her illness a secret so it wouldn’t appear that his diet had failed.

Multiple Major Soda Brands Sued Because Their Diet Soda Claims Are ‘Deceptive”

Six different individuals have filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. for misleading advertisements regarding the companies’ diet soda options.

The six individuals, who have all struggled with obesity and looked to diet sodas to help with weight loss, claim that the aspartame, a low-calorie sweetener that’s used in the diet sodas, have made them gain weight instead.

Aspartame, a sugar substitute that’s also sold under the name NutraSweet and Equal, is used heavily in “diet” labeled foods. According to Boston Magazine and a 2016 study from Massachussets General Hospital, when aspartame is ingested, a compound called phenylalanine is produced. Phenylalanine has been proven to interfere with IAP, or intestinal alkaline phosphate, an enzyme that helps prevent diabetes and weight loss. According to that same article, artificial sweeteners have been shown to make consumers hungrier, leading them to binge eat in the long run.

Therefore, with these proven studies, the suits claim that marketing these beverages as “diet” is false, misleading, and unlawful.

Derek Smith, whose law firm is the lead counsel for all three lawsuits, said that their case will focus on aspartame, but noted that all artificial sweeteners behave the same in our bodies.

Coca-Cola and Dr Pepper Snapple has called the lawsuit “meritless” and claims to “vigorously defend against it.” PepsiCo has yet to make an official statement.

The World’s Strongest Man Eats Twice As Much As ‘The Rock’ Daily

There’s only one man in the world who can claim to be the strongest, and Brian Shaw is that man. The 2016 World’s Strongest Man was on Super Training Productions and showed what the world’s strongest diet looks like, as he usually chows down on 7 meals a day, totaling over 12,000 calories.

As you can imagine, his diet is different than a normal man’s diet. Hell, it’s leaps and bounds different than The Rock’s diet, and The Rock is a beast in his own right. As has been documented in the past, The Rock’s typical diet will have him consuming about 5,165 calories a day. Shaw literally eats more than twice as much as The Rock.

The 423-pound, 35-year-old, out of Fort Lupton Colorado  has a dietitian who tells him to grub on bowls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast, and cheesecake before bed. That sounds like a diet we can all get behind, everything he eats in between is a little more health conscious.

While dieters often get specific about what times they eat their meals, Shaw was running behind on this particular day and had to squeeze in all seven meals in 13 hours.

It also seems like Shaw isn’t too worried about being specific about every single calorie, carb or gram of protein, and he just ballpark’s it at times.

If you thought cutting out food for a diet was hard, having to add 10,000 calories of food to the recommended daily intake might be even harder.

Breakfast: 1st Meal

– 1 lb of 93% lean ground turkey

– Uncle Ben’s Jasmine Ready Rice, 8.5 ounces

– 1 bag of Steamfresh brocolli

– Salsa- unmeasured

Dinner, 6th Meal: Pasta, Pasta, Pasta

For dinner, Shaw said he usually eats another pound of beef, potatoes and asparagus, but since he had a big day of training ahead, he changed it up a bit, going with a carb-heavy, pasta meal. Shaw went to an Italian restaurant, and didn’t really go into detail of his meal, but he did say it was a total of about 3,400 calories. From his plates, you can see a huge plate of spaghetti, about four breadsticks, what looks like tortellini, meatballs, and a huge glass of soda.

He doesn’t seem too worried about his macronutrients here, he just knew he had to go heavy on the carbs.

Pre-bed Snack: 7th Meal

Constipated Man Shoves Live Eel Up His Butt To Eat Away Blockage, Here’s What Went Wrong

As we’ve learned as we get older, fiber is essential to our diets. Especially in this line of food-heavy work.

It seems a man in Guangzhou, China needed just a bit more fiber in his lifestyle as he had a pretty bad case of constipation, reports SoraNews.

His solution to this shitty problem? The dude thought it was the best form of treatment to shove a live 20-inch eel up his butt to eat away all of his shit blockage.

Yes, rather than buying laxatives or seeing a physician, he thought it would be a good idea to try this ancient folk remedy he heard about.

Unfortunately, the terrified creature tore through the man’s intestines before getting stuck in his midsection.

The man went to the hospital, yet avoided informing doctors of his newfound friend. Imagine their surprise when they ran tests and discovered this dude’s “home remedy” just sitting in his stomach. Immediate surgery was needed in order to prevent further harm to the man’s life.

Sadly, the eel died while inside the man. He was, however, said to be recovering after the procedure. Check out the recreation of the incident provided by TomoNews in the video above, complete with post-surgery photos.

The takeaway from this? Maybe eat more fiber and shove less eels in your body.

Study Reveals The 20 ‘Fattest’ Cities In The U.S.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 70.7 percent of Americans over 20 years old were overweight or obese.

A personal finance website named Wallethub decided to chart the cities that have the “fattest” people. By analyzing the 100 most populated U.S. metro areas, they gathered data from physically inactive adults to projected obesity rates by 2030 to healthy-food access within those areas.

It’s also good to point out that a lot of the top cities on this list, such as Memphis, TN and Jackson, MS, are known to be food deserts. Cities like these don’t have easy access to healthy or wholesome food, which may be the leading cause of the rampant obesity.

A lot of the cities that deal with obesity, or have weight-related health problems on this list, seem to be from the South. In fact, the whole top-20 consists of cities in the southern U.S.
