9 Foods You Wouldn’t Expect To Find In A Vending Machine

When you think of vending machines, you think of gifts of gloriously cheap and convenient snacks and beverages to keep you going throughout the day. However, the world is beginning to spin these contraptions in brand new directions, and you can find all sorts of crazy things in vending machines that nobody would have dreamed of putting in there just a few years ago.

Read on to see nine things you would never expect to find in a vending machine.

Pet Food

It sounds really weird for pet food to be coming out of a machine, right? Well, it turns out this one is actually for a great cause, as the machine, created by Turkish company Pugedon, is designed to feed stray pets in urban areas. All you have to do is drop off a recyclable bottle, and the bottom tray of the vending machine will dispense some food for the strays to eat. It’s an odd but awesome way to take care of pets on the streets, that’s for sure.

Italian Pasta

The Barilla vending machine shown in this Bicom clip will actually cook pasta for you, with sauce, in a short amount of time. While you can make pasta at home for much cheaper than what this machine charges you, it’s an interesting remedy for anyone who forgot to bring their lunch one day.

Live Minnows

We’ve seen live crabs in vending machines before that you can take home, but minnows? You can buy small cans of them to use as fishing bait from this particular vending machine shown in YouTuber’s Village Tackle vid. The longer they’re alive, the more likely fish are to catch them, I guess…

Fried Foods

I don’t think anybody expects to get their lunch out of a vending machine. If you have a hankering for fast-food items like chicken nuggets, you’d rather just go to the restaurant and get them yourself. Of course, convenience and unique Japanese vending machines say otherwise, and so, here we have YouTuber Venus Angelic ordering fried chicken out of a machine. Yes, fried chicken.

MyCupcakeAddiction got to check out this crazy cupcake ATM at Sprinkles cupcakes in Los Angeles, CA, that lets you customize your dessert and delivers it to you in a sleek box. Upon watching, I’m just baffled at how they make this happen. It’s attached to the cupcake shop, so maybe they just make it super fast and put it on a conveyor to the machine? Or maybe the machine just knows how to custom-build cupcakes? It’s a mystery that needs solving.

If you’re in extreme need of on-the-go, speedy burritos, this vending machine may be your choice. ETC Show checked it out and found it to be pretty interesting. The machine lets you pick your burrito, additional toppings, and then plays catchy music while you wait. Sounds super cool, but honestly, I can get a custom-made fresh burrito in the same amount of time from a fast-casual spot. Is it really worth that extra convenience for this burrito vending machine to exist? We say yes.

Canned Bread

Okay, bread is fine enough when properly packaged in a vending machine. But what is the point of sticking bread into a can? Not sure if it does anything to help the bread out orrrr…? So many odd questions, so few answers. Watch as japanesestuffchannel takes one home in this video, and tbh, it actually looks pretty delicious once pulled apart.

Mashed Potatoes

The reaction of the HLN newscasters in this video says it all for this mashed potato vending machine. You get some liquid mashed potatoes out of this vending machine that then gets topped off with brown gravy. They’re definitely using instant potatoes to make this product, which makes sense since it’s a vending machine.

Japan really loves its wacky vending machines, and this sweet crepe-filled contraption shown in this Only in Japan video is one of the special ones out there. Found in Kagoshima, you can pick from a variety of crepe flavors for a portable treat — including custard, caramel, Hershey’s chocolate and even potato. It looks like there are dozens and dozens of flavors to choose from and I now know where my next vacation is going to be.

Food Fight: Cupcakes vs. Muffins

“Isn’t a cupcake just a muffin with frosting?” It’s a question pondered all too often, and if you’re reading this right now, you’ve probably asked it as well. Or, you just want to watch your faves go head to head in the ultimate smackdown: cupcakes vs. muffins! Okay, maybe it’s not the ultimate smackdown, but it’s definitely a delicious one. Let the games begin.

No matter what that stubborn friend of yours says (“I like cupcakes but I don’t like cake!”), cupcakes are ultimately miniature versions of whole cakes. Hence the name, cupcake.

They’re made with the same ingredients as your everyday cake, bread-based, and are topped with a layer of sweet frosting. And if you’re lucky, there’s filling inside!

Also bread-based, they’re made with the same ingredients as your typical sweet loaf. Often filled with fruits, seeds, nuts, and other goodies, you’ll definitely know you’re eating a muffin rather than a cupcake, as they’re considered the more “healthful” alternative.

Cupcakes are a lot lighter than muffins when it comes to the bread, but when it comes to the bread only. The lightness is a result of the baking difference between muffins and cupcakes: in cupcakes, the butter is creamed with sugar, and the batter is beaten for a longer time than that of a muffin to achieve a fluffier texture.

Even though both cupcakes and muffins use the same ingredients (butter, milk eggs, sugar flour), the texture and consistency of muffins are a bit denser since the batter isn’t beaten as extensively as a cupcakes’.

Cupcakes are a beloved food and pop culture icon, having a strong presence across several media platforms. It’s probable you can name at least three different cupcake-centric reality TV shows off the top of your head. You’re also more likely to double-tap a crazy colorful cupcake on your favorite food porn Instagram handle than a muffin.

The “healthy” thing. It’s true, a lot of muffins aren’t as healthful as we naively assume, but they’re still a lot better for us than any cupcake would be. Muffins are more likely to be made with more wholesome ingredients such as a whole wheat, oat, or nut flour. There are also a lot more gluten, soy, dairy, and egg free options readily available when it comes to muffin recipes.

The “not healthy” thing. Cupcakes can be very taxing when it comes to the effect they have on the glycemic index. If you’re a baker, it’s insanely easy to overdo the top portion of a cupcake with frosting, candy, sprinkles, drizzle – you name it – in the name of creating a fantastically memorable treat. If you’re a consumer, it’s insanely easy to choose the most decadent cupcake at a bakery in the name of making your tastebuds happy (although, you and/or your tum might feel guilty afterward).

Aah, how to put this…muffins aren’t very…“hip.” Honestly, when’s the last time you laid eyes on a jaw-dropping muffin? You can only go so far when it comes to the toppings and glazes that grace the peak of a muffin, because you’d essentially be crossing over into cupcake territory.

WINNER: Cupcakes

This was a no-brainer. Cupcakes and muffins are both delicious in their own right, and they can surely coexist peacefully and amicably, but if someone tries to tell you a muffin is just a cupcake without frosting, please remove them from your life immediately. Or, simply hand them one of each and demand they eat those words (literally), right then and there. You don’t need that kind of nonsense in your life.

You Can Actually Pop These Pimple Cupcakes

One bakery in California might have created the most disgusting cupcakes ever.

Blessed By Baking, a California bakery has created these custom pimple cupcakes made to look exactly like a zit.

How can something so pus-like taste so good?!?! Pimple cupcakes by the amazing @blessedbybaking

A photo posted by Sandra Lee, MD Dermatology (@drpimplepopper) on

The design that makes it look so disgustingly close to a pimple appears to be beige fondant  for the skin and some sort of yellow custard for the pus. The bakery’s Instagram is filled with custom creations from animals to mermaids, but not anything quite so amazingly gross looking.

If the likeness to actual zits weren’t enough, the cupcakes are also squeezable. As you can see you can “pop” them like you would an actual zit and the yellow pus runs out.

The cupcakes were made for Sandra Lee, better known for her Instagram name, Dr. Pimple Popper. Her account, which features pimple popping, among other rather disgusting extractions from her work as a dermatologist. The account has 1.6 million followers, so apparently a lot of people really enjoy being totally grossed out by actual pimples popping, not just the cupcake variety.

Both Blessed By Baking And Dr. Pimple Popper posted a photo and video of the  cupcakes. One of the photos alone on Dr. Pimple Popper’s account received 24.9k likes, presumably by people who can’t decide whether they’d rather devour or be disgusted by the cupcakes.

Cinnamon Roll Mardi Gras Cupcakes Are The Perfect Fat Tuesday Snack

Mardis Gras King Cupcakes

It's #FATTUESDAY aka #MardisGras, and what better way to celebrate than to make these easy King Cupcakes with a hidden good luck charm.

Posted by Josh Elkin on Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Today is Tuesday and that means Mardi Gras is happening tonight. Our buddy Josh Elkin is at it again, this time with a sweet entry in to his video recipe arsenal. Elkin created Mardi Gras King Cupcakes made from cinnamon rolls.

First grab a tube of pre-made cinnamon roll dough. Take two pieces and squeeze them together into one ball of dough which you’ll separate into three balls. Butter up a muffin tray and add three balls to each slot.

At this point, you can hide a baby trinket inside one of the muffins for good luck.

Throw your tray in the oven for about 15 minutes at 375 degrees. While the cinnamon roll muffins are baking, head up your frosting/glaze for about 15 seconds.

When your Mardi Gras cupcakes are ready, drizzle a generous amount of glaze on top of each one. Then add your sprinkles.

Just don’t forget which cupcake that baby’s in. He’s a choking hazard.

Check out Elkin’s video above for the complete recipe, in detail.

This Magical Bowling Alley Indulges Your Inner Child With Pizza Cupcakes and S’Mores Skillets

Every time we visit a bowling alley, we flash back to our youth. There’s nothing like a bowling birthday party complete with pizza and cupcakes. Nothing fuel’s strikes like cheese and sugar.

Bowlmor Lanes, one of the highest-grossing bowling alley in the US, has added a few items that harken back to our childhood diets. Though let’s be honest, pizza and cupcakes are kind of our pregame for dinner.

The bowling chain is offering a Pizza Cupcake hybrid that’s definitely turning heads. These cupcakes are made with pizza dough stuffed with pizza sauce, mozzarella and pepperoni in the middle and on top.

Executive Chef Edward Porter, a former winner of Food Network’s Guys Grocery Games, created the new menu item to accompany the bowling alley’s signature 5-pound Behemoth Burger.

Also new to the menu is a S’mores Skillet that features a bed of crunchy graham crackers, melted milk chocolate, oversized marshmallows and a drizzle of caramel.

The new menu is going to hit Bowlmor locations sometime in November.
