Instagram-Famous ‘Mochi Muffins’ Shipping Nationwide For The First Time Ever

If you’re from or have been to the San Francisco Bay Area recently, you know that the hot sweet treat around there is the Mochi Muffin. Third Culture Bakery, the shop behind the viral and widespread treat, is now making their signature food available for purchase nationwide for the first time ever.

Owners Sam Butarbutar and Wenter Shyu have been growing the Third Culture Bakery brand, with a new bakeshop having opened a few weeks back in Colorado. With the coronavirus pandemic drastically affecting everyone, however, the company decided to expand their Mochi Muffin offering to nationwide masses yearning to get a taste.

As of press time, Third Culture is only selling their Original Mochi Muffin nationwide, rather than branching out into the other flavors they make for shipping just yet. Shyu told Foodbeast that their other flavors of the mochi muffins will be available for national delivery later this week. Folks who live within UberEats ranges for their Bay Area and Denver also have access to the showrooms’ full online menus.

The Original Mochi Muffins are sweet while nutty, with a base of rice flour and ingredients like sesame and pandan that add to their aroma. They’re also incredibly squishy, and might be the closest to an edible stress ball we’ll ever get to.

You can now find these Mochi Muffins for sale on Third Culture’s website in packs of either 6 or 12, alongside other items like Uji Ceremonial Matcha, rice flour totes, and other apparel. Shyu told Foodbeast that they’ve already shipped to 16 states so far.

Between 2 Meals: This Isolated Restaurant Can Only Be Reached By Horse-Drawn Sleigh Or Skis

When I heard that the Foodbeast team was going to Aspen for the new episode of Between 2 Meals, I was worried. There was no doubt in my mind they could do what they set out to— create a utility guide of good eats and a possible excursion for any curious travelers in Aspens, that is. But a bunch of Southern Californians in the mountain cold? I was sure someone was going to end up like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

Luckily, it appears they kept the Java Monster flowing and their bodies moving. Indeed, only once did they come close to a frozen Foodbeast when the episode’s host Geoff Kutnick mistook how to cross-country ski (walking in the snow on skis, for the uninformed) and tried to, literally, ski two miles uphill.

Needless to say, this did not go well, but it did provide for one of the episode’s best moments. And that’s saying something, as Geoff explored two of Aspen’s prime eateries and one of its signature activities.

At the first stop of the episode, Geoff explores the accidental history behind Aspen hotspot Bamboo Bear’s signature fried chicken, which is double fried for a remarkably crispy skin. The dish has become a staple for Aspen eaters, along with the restaurant’s traditional banh mi that uses fresh baguettes from a local Vietnamese bakery. Judging by the look of pure bliss on Geoff’s face after dunking a wing in the restaurant’s Bear’s Breath sauce, there’s no doubt that this is a must visit in the Colorado town.

Before the next meal, our host was joined by twelve-time X Games medalist Jackson Strong. The two tour Aspen’s main attractions, the slopes, via snowmobile. While most people opt for skis or snowboards as their mode of exploration, when an X Games contender approaches you with snowmobiles, you take the snowmobile. Once Geoff had a snowmobile ride that was a little more than he bargained for, it was off to the next restaurant.

After the aforementioned uphill trek, the two reach the Pine Creek Cookhouse, a local stronghold that’s only accessible by sleigh or cross-country ski, to check out it’s surprising specialties. The first is the massive Kurt Russell burger, sourced straight from the actor’s cattle farm. The second, a type of Nepalese dumpling called momos, is a tribute to Pine Creek owner John Wilcox’s extensive experience in the Himalayas. The restaurant’s forte is handmade by actual sherpas, who staff much of the kitchen.

The restaurant also features Aspen’s only outdoor skating rink. When the season heats up, the rink transforms into a mini-golf park. Activities galore!

Home Team BBQ

Home Team is a local spot on Buttermilk Range with a cozy interior and some legit barbecue. The habanero jelly and creamy white Alabama sauce with their wings are a winner. They also fuse together barbecue and brunch or breakfast, with items like a brunch burger, BBQ breakfast burritos and enchiladas, and more on the menu.

Hops Culture

You don’t have to go camping to enjoy s’mores. In fact, Hops Culture bar serves up a tableside s’mores platter that takes the camping experience straight to the bar, letting you enjoy some craft brews all while getting your childhood fix of graham crackers, chocolate, and roasted marshmallows in a casual setting.

Meat & Cheese Restaurant

Rich artisanal cheeses, savory meats, and bread so fresh you can smell it from a block away. They can be made with any of Paradise’s ice cream flavors, such as birthday cake, acting as a creamy companion for your coffee.

Su Casa Mexican Restaurant

For anyone trying to find shelter from the icy weather, Su Casa Mexican Restaurant specializes in a pretty fiery dish. Called the “Crazy Pig,” this seafood dish is served inside a whimsical pig-shaped molcajete and filled with a red tomatillo sauce, scallops, mussels, cheese, and garnished with fried shrimp. A little latin heat to this chilly hamlet.

The Red Onion

One of the oldest bars and restaurants in Aspen, The Red Onion has been around since 1892. A stunning establishment, the building boasts a gorgeous Victorian aesthetic that’s been gradually updated through the ages.

On the menu you’ll find American classics like the Colorado Burger, as well as The Red Onion’s popular customizable Mac and Cheese. Seriously guys, you can load this plate of mac up with all your favorite meats: bacon, shrimp, or even pulled pork and top them with roasted jalapenos.

According to owner Brad Smith, The Red Onion serves more Coors Banquet than any other single outlet in the country.

Blue Moon Creator Shares His Journey To Cannabis Beer And The Difficulties Behind The Brew

Late last year, Dr. Keith Villa, the founder of Blue Moon, launched his very own line of cannabis-infused beer name Ceria. Based in Colorado, the brew sold out almost immediately upon launch and has become a hot ticket purchase at local dispensaries in the state.

So what was the journey behind Ceria?

Villa, who holds a PhD in brewing from the University of Brussels in Belgium, began his career more than 30 years ago at MillerCoors. Upon his retirement, Villa and his wife immediately began their own brewery based out of Colorado.

His foray into weed beer actually began a little bit before his retirement from Blue Moon and parent company MillerCoors in 2018.

“In 2014, that’s when recreational cannabis became legal in the state of Colorado. At that time there was still a pretty large stigma around cannabis,” he recalled. “But I thought, it’s very possible to brew with cannabis because if you look at the genetics in the family tree of hops, you’ll see that cannabis is a close cousin of the hops plant.”

Ever the scientist, Villa began to test the concept afterhours.

“So I tried at home and on my own time because I never wanted to endanger the federal brewing permit of Blue Moon and Coors. So I always did it, all the cannabis experiments at home on my own time.”

That’s when the first semblance of Ceria came to existence.

“I found out quickly that, you can brew some beers with cannabis. That really got me to thinking, you know, this could be a whole new category because there are so many people who don’t drink alcohol for health reasons or religious reasons or whatever and they do want cannabis, because a lot of people believe cannabis does have healthful medicinal properties.”

Villa brought his wife onto the new venture, someone who has been working with him from the very start during all of his home tastings and tests.

“She lived with me in Belgium where I was getting my PhD. She’s one of the few people I know and trust that actually has lived in Belgium and can truly judge Belgian Beers and European-style beers.”

The two put their heads together and discovered that this could be an entirely new frontier that’s been untapped.

“We started figuring out right away that this could be a whole new category for beer. And so yeah, when we retired, we started Ceria Brewing Company and figured out right away that the best path forward was to focus on great tasting, non-alcoholic beers, craft beers that have the effects of cannabis and not the effects of alcohol. It was really hard creating a great tasting non-alcoholic beer. “

Villa didn’t seem like a man who would shy away from the challenge, however.

“Luckily with all my years of brewing experience as a brewmaster, I was able to create a series of non-alcoholic beers that taste really good. The next step is adding the cannabis in. So we have the effects of cannabis inside of a great smelling and great tasting craft beer.”

Working with cannabis and alcohol is an extremely tricky task. Dr. Villa explained that there were some major legal hurdles they had to overcome before launching their new product.

“Cannabis is federally illegal,” Villa states. “Though it is legal in the state of Colorado. So the first hurdle was alcohol, because the federal government, they strictly forbid anybody to put something that’s federally illegal into an alcoholic beverage. So you cannot add cannabis to it.”

“The Colorado Division of Revenue, through a subdivision called the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED), is the agency who controls and regulates the cannabis industry,” Villa explains.

Essentially, you can’t add cannabis to an alcoholic product and you can’t add alcohol to a cannabis product in the state of Colorado.

“So it was real clear right away that we could not have an alcoholic product with cannabis,” he said. “That’s what necessitated me to create a great tasting non-alcoholic beer. So that was definitely the first hurdle.”

Once Villa nailed the taste he wanted for a non-alcoholic beer, he set his sights on a different obstacle.

“After that, the biggest hurdle was getting people to taste our product because so many have read about cannabis or heard about it. And so many are just afraid of getting stoned. Well, our product is always going to be a lower dose so that people can trust it and not get stoned. They can get a mild buzz off, but they won’t get stoned.”

Finally, Dr. Villa explains the rich history behind his company’s name.

“Ceria is actually from the Roman goddess of fertility and agriculture. She’s in history, she is the goddess of agriculture, meeting hops and cannabis. Her name is Ceres. That’s where we get the names, cereal — like breakfast cereal. That’s where we get the name of Ceria.”

Boasting a medium-bodied taste and some notes of citrus and a smooth malty finish, Ceria can be purchased at select dispensaries throughout the state of Colorado. Villa shares in parting that Ceria plans on expanding to other states in the upcoming months as well as the development of new flavors.

Over 200 Million Eggs Recalled, 6 People Hospitalized After Salmonella Outbreak

It’s never good to hear that a food is being recalled, but it’s scarier when it’s such a common food, such as eggs.

The FDA reported that over 206 million eggs from Rose Acre Farms in Seymore, Ind. were recalled after being linked to 22 cases of Salmonella.

Nine states were affected by the voluntary recall, as Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia had eggs at risk of being contaminated.

From the 22 cases, six people have been hospitalized, but thankfully there have been no reported deaths.

The brands that use these eggs are Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, and Sunshine Farms, so if you have any of them in your fridge, you should probably return them.

Rose Acre Farms produces 2.3 million eggs a day, according to the New York Times, that means about three months worth of egg production had to be returned.

If you live in these states, and feel there’s a chance you may have been affected, be sure to watch for salmonella symptoms such as abdomen and muscle pain, chills, dehydration, fatigue, fever, headaches, diarrhea, bloody stool, or even loss of appetite.

Chick-fil-A Actually Opened On A Sunday After A Fatal Shooting

Chick-fil-A is known for being closed on Sundays. It’s a fact that every fan hates, complains about, but eventually accepts. There are exceptions to the rule, however, as a Colorado Chick-fil-A opened its doors and helped feed first responders after a deadly shooting on Sunday, December 31.

The shooting occurred at an apartment in Highlands Ranch, as a suspect shot hundreds of rounds at Colorado deputies, according to Bro Bible.

The gunman killed Douglas County Deputy Zackari Parrish, and wounded six others before being taken down by SWAT, according to Fox 31 Denver.

While a somber day for Coloradans, the Park Meadows Chick-fil-A tried to help by opening its doors and serving 400 chicken sandwiches to first responders.

You might remember that after the tragic Orlando night club shooting in 2016, Chick-fil-A employees went in to work Sunday and made sandwiches for people donating blood to the One Blood center.

Also, just last month, the Chick-fil-A inside Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport also opened on a Sunday, as a massive power outage hit the airport, leading them to hand out sandwiches to passengers.

So Chick-fil-A’s Sunday closure policy isn’t as strict as it seems, but it unfortunately takes terrible occurrences for them to open their doors.

In-N-Out Goes All In, Will Open 50 RESTAURANTS In Colorado

In-N-Out has been a California staple over 60 years, and while it has sprinkled a few locations outside the Golden State, it plans to take a giant leap in Colorado.

The plan is to open up to 50 restaurants, as In-N-Out will be opening a beef production facility and distribution center in Colorado Springs, according to the OC Register.

The distribution center is key, as one of the major reasons In-N-Out hasn’t ventured too far away from California, is its commitment to freshness attitude, keeping its restaurants fairly close to its production facilities.

Outside of California, Texas actually built its own processing plant, as well, leading to 36 restaurants being built in the Lone Star State since 2011.

Setting up a plant of its own gives Colorado similar flexibility to Texas, and as of now, the planned 50 restaurants will all be within 350 miles of the production facility.

There is no scheduled date for the first restaurant, per FOX Denver, so it might be a waiting game for Coloradans before they can get their Double Doubles, but they have to be stoked that the popular restaurant is finally reaching them.

Colorado Is Paying People To Catch This Illegal Predatory Fish

Colorado has a massive problem with a predatory fish species, and is looking to pay fishermen to come in and help alleviate the issue.

Several years ago, a large quantity of Northern Pike fish were illegally dumped into Colorado’s Green Mountain Reservoir. As a voracious predator, the pike were able to grow swiftly by consuming many of the native fish in this crucial body of water that connects to major rivers like the Blue and Colorado River. As their population continues to swell, a growing concern amongst the Colorado Water Conservation Board and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is that Northern pike could enter these rivers and continue to spread like wildfire, eventually eliminating the native fish like pikeminnow and bony tail, all of which have already become endangered.

To prevent this massive blow to Colorado’s ecosystem, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is calling on all anglers to come out to the Green Mountain Reservoir and catch as many of these Northern Pike fish as they possibly can. For each pike they reel in, fishermen will receive 20 bucks as a way to say thanks for preserving Colorado’s ecosystem.

To receive credit for each fish, all you have to do is show up with your fish, driver’s license, and fishing license at the Heeney Marina in Silverthorne. Parks and Wildlife will keep the head of each fish, but the bodies can either be returned to the catchers to use for a tasty meal or donated to the Marina for future distribution.

If you’re looking to make some extra cash and have a fun fishing road trip, maybe consider adding in some public service and going after some Northern Pike. The state of Colorado and the Green Mountain Reservoir community would certainly be happy you did.
