How Many Calories Are Actually Inside The Alcohol You’re Drinking

People tend to count calories when it comes to food, but not many are very familiar with alcohol calories. How many are there in your favorite drinks?

When you go to the supermarket, all of the foods you pick up have their calories written on their sleeve. Or more precisely, their labels. But brewers, distillers, and winemakers are under no obligation to do that. According to Vox, the drink-related industries have been lobbying for years to keep it that way. Researchers in the BMJ called for mandatory nutrition labels, saying that alcoholic drinks contribute to obesity.

Some of the biggest brewers in America, like Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, Heineken USA, Constellation Brands Beer Division, North American Breweries, and Craft Brew Alliance, promised to begin publishing nutrition information on labels by next year. But that’s just beer and just the calories in beer. Wines, spirits, and mixed drinks will still be unknowns. Especially since a lot of them contain a lot of added sugars, flavors, and preservatives.

Lindsay Moyer, senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in Public Interest (CSPI) has started to track calories in popular alcoholic drinks. Her findings were published in CSPI’s Nutrition Action website.

Check the list out, to know what you’re dealing with when drinking and even cooking with alcohol if you’re into counting calories.

Alcohol calories: how does beer fit in? 

“The calories in alcohol are a concern because people may forget about them,” said Moyer for Vox. “We’re used to seeing calories on nutrition facts labels for almost any food package, but when you pick up an alcoholic drink, that information just isn’t there.”

Most 12-ounce cans of light beer have about 100 calories. Others, which are just fairly light, have about 150 calories. A lot of Belgian brews, IPAs, and stouts get to huge calorie levels, 200 to 300.

Mixed drinks are loaded with sugar

A lot of the mixed drinks are full of sugar because of the juice, tonic water, or mixer and they’re often sweetened with high-fructose-corn-syrup. Some of them reach 350 calories, while others can take you up to 700 if you can believe that. Unfortunately, we can.

Not to mention that the energy they give you is not as filling as solid foods, so you will still want to eat a lot after having one of these drinks.

Wines have more calories than beer

According to CSPI data, most 6-ounce glasses of red or white wine have about 150 calories. Even though red wine is said to be incredibly healthy for you, that’s still a lot. And most of us have multiple glasses for dinner or when we go out. But this is your average glass of wine. There are sweeter varieties that are on trend right now, like Moscato.

How do you know to not up your calorie intake too much? There is a clue when it comes to alcohol content. The larger the percentage of alcohol, the bigger the number of calories in the drink you’re thinking of having. And the sweeter the drink, the more calories as well. Like for anything, the idea here is to drink in moderation, if you’re concerned about your calorie intake.

9 Unexpectedly High-Calorie Health Foods & What You Can Do To Burn Them Off

It seems the consensus is that a healthy diet and plenty of exercise appear to be the key to one’s well being. Gotta make sure to jot that down in my Trapper Keeper.

While introducing health foods to your diet is a good thing, there’s definitely a limit to how much of some health foods you should actually consume. A bag of mixed nuts and dried fruit can clock in at nearly 700 calories (almost half the allotted calories for a day’s worth of food).

Budget Direct Health Insurance created an infographic that highlights nine healthy, albeit high-calorie, foods. Not only does it show you which health foods are a clown car full of calories, but it also offers methods to work off those calories while getting stuff done around the house.

Each food features a daily activity and the length of time it will take doing that activity to burn those calories.

Check out the infographic below. At the very least, you’ll be able to see what health foods to enjoy in moderation and which chores burn off the most calories. Keep in mind these are just approximations and you can still totally go to the gym.

McDonald’s and Disney Will, Once Again, Live Happily Ever After

After much deliberation, Disney has decided to take back McDonald’s.

Disney and the Golden Arches have finally reunited. After over 10 years apart, the two will thankfully have McDonald’s Happy Meals featuring Disney characters as the toys accompanying your child’s delicious meal that you will eventually steal from.

Starting off this shift is the “Incredibles 2,” with toys featuring characters from the highly anticipated new Disney film.

The only Disney film that seems like it could potentially helm the role of Happy Meal toy is “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2,” but that doesn’t come out until November ’18, so the “Incredibles 2” better live up to its name and reputation.

But it’s alright, it’s been over a decade, we’ll cut them some slack for now. The reason Disney severed its ties with the fast food empire was because they found the Happy Meals to be too high in caloric intake. In 2006, the obesity epidemic was huge, and Disney thought it best to relinquish any further desire of the Happy Meals that children harbored.

It was a smart move on Disney, to keep McDonald’s to a healthier standard. The fast food franchise showed it really understood the change by announcing this February that it would reduce the calorie count on their Happy Meals by 20 percent, as well as cutting the cheeseburger from the meal.

So, it seems the children of 2006 were gifted with toys and calories galore, and the little tykes nowadays are going to be getting the same, just maybe a fewer toys and fewer calories. That ain’t so bad, is it?

10 of the Highest Calorie Fast Food Menu Items Ever

Real talk, we can’t be expected to eat healthy all the time. Everyone has cheat meals — or entire cheat days — and that can range from a handful of honey-roasted peanuts to a hefty plate of nachos the size of an infant (I’ll take the latter).

And fast food drive-thrus make it all too easy to obtain a glorious snack-meal that is in no way good for the human digestive system. But we do it anyway. Then we come down off of our high and groan out words like, “Oh, I shouldn’t have done that,” even though deep down we know we’ll absolutely pull this again soon enough.

So let’s talk about those fast food menu items we consider both a blessing and a curse, all those enticing items that dwell north of 1,000-calorie mark. Some crashed into our lives and then fled the menu; others are totally available to order as soon as you finish this list. And for the record, if you don’t count calories, keep in mind that the recommended daily intake of calories is 1,500 – 2,500 for women and 2,000 – 3,000 for men. We’re talking serious gut punches here.

This technically serves three individuals, but let’s also not make assumptions about anyone’s eating habits. Plenty of people order take-out and get handed an extra fork or two by a presumptuous, or maybe hopeful, server. Meanwhile, chicken rings aren’t exactly a caloric surprise, considering that they’re breaded and fried. The tag-along dipping options aren’t exactly slimming either, given that your choices are barbecue, honey mustard, ranch, and zesty-zing sauce.

Even at a casual glance, you can tell this thing crosses into four-digit territory. With three beef patties, cheese and mayo, we’re actually surprised it wasn’t number one on the list. It’s quite the beast to behold, but we’d be up for the challenge, tbh.

They do say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and with that in mind, syrupy pancakes, crunchy hash browns, scrambled eggs, a biscuit and coffee sounds juuust right. That said, at nearly 1,200 calories, it would also have to be the only meal of the day. Maybe.

It’s likely that you don’t usually describe food as “unapologetic,” but I’m otherwise at a loss for words here. Originally hyped as “the hottest burger in fast food” in an appeal to customers in the southwest, this thing straight went for it right out of the gate. Tucked between its buns is a thick burger patty that’s padded with pepper jack cheese, sliced jalapenos, and jalapeno poppers, all with a habanero-bacon sauce going wild in there, too. Also, it should be noted that it was created by an art director, so take that as you will.

Steak Quesadilla // Baja Fresh (1,430 Calories)

So little can mean so much. Made up of just steak and jack cheese in a flour tortilla, topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream, this dish somehow has a caloric intake that sneaks up on you. Hell, people might even be ordering this as a side, in addition to a main meal. We need to warn them! But also, we’d like an extra side of guac, please.

Chicken Carbonara Pasta in a Bread Bowl // Domino’s (1,470 Calories)

Making it very obvious that there’s more to their game than pizza, Domino’s offers this insane festival of calories. Welcome a mix of bacon and chicken breast with penne pasta drenched in alfredo sauce with mushrooms and onions in there too, all stuffed into a bread bowl (Uhm, the best part). Hope you’re carbo-loading or planning to run a marathon in the near future!

Well, of course this blows out the calorie count! You’re taking a dish that, at a minimum, is made up of dough, sauce, and cheese, then adding two kinds of sausage, beef, and ham with bacon crumbles. There’s legitimately no room for any kind of vegetable. #Respect

Such a sandwich seems simple enough, as it’s pretty much fontanini meatballs with double mozzarella and marinara sauce, but this behemoth doesn’t mess around. Sure, you can tick off a calorie or two by choosing wheat bread over jalapeno cheddar, but this thing will find you. It will come at you with an army of calories and there is little you can do about it (besides ordering a different item, I guess).

It’s good that Sonic is a drive-in because there’s absolutely no way you could walk any amount of distance after indulging in an entire day’s worth of calories from this single shake. Masterpieces like this are why we look forward to summer, a time when we can swim off such a caloric undertaking after napping for several hours with labored breathing. Honestly, I’m exhausted just thinking about this thing. But hey, there’s no saying no to a PB and Snickers shake.

How The Wendy’s Baked Potato Became A $100 Million Item

With a successful 48-year history, Wendy’s has clearly become a fast food icon. However, some may not realize Wendy’s is the only fast food joint that sells a baked potato. Thanks to the success of this classic item over the years, the Wendy’s baked potato may just be the best deal in fast food.

The concept of the baked potato is simple, but according to Thrillist, the process of getting this steamy side item into stores and onto the plates of customers is a “logistical nightmare,” and that’s where Wendy’s is cashing in.

While potatoes have a very traditional role inside the fast food industry, most potatoes quickly shed their natural state after being cut and fried. Case in point, a plain Wendy’s baked potato weighs 11.5 ounces and is about 270 calories.

Even when cheese and bacon bits are added, it’s only 480 calories. Compared to a 320-calorie small order of fries, Wendy’s baked potato is clearly superior in terms of serving size, while being a slightly healthier alternative.

Still, there’s no easy way to go about cooking a baked potato. However, Wendy’s has innovated, bringing in new convection ovens to handle, “1 million potatoes per week,” according to a Wendy’s spokesperson.

According to Lori Estrada, Wendy’s VP of Culinary Innovation, being able to find a solution for this time-consuming challenge in a fast-food industry built on convenience and speed is where Wendy’s has capitalized the most.

With the cost of a plain baked potato between $1.89 and $1.99 before tax, multiplied by the number of units sold — 1 million potatoes per week, or 52 million a year — it can be estimated that Wendy’s baked potatoes bring in $2 million per week. That’s about $100 million annually.

“It’s a challenge, operationally, to be able to serve them and have them ready for every customer who comes through our doors,” Estrada divulged. “I can only guess that aspect has made it hard for other places to be willing to put something like this into production.”

Considering the endless possibilities of baked potato modification, which Estrada said can be customized with, “anything we top our fries or burgers with,” Wendy’s baked potato is a beacon of creativity, sustenance and truly one of the most over-looked menu items in fast food.

Your ‘Zero-Calorie’ Sweeteners Aren’t Actually Calorie-Free

If you rely on Splenda as your go-to calorie-free sweetener, this video is going to rock your world.

Tom Scott teamed up with YouTube channel Technicality to create a bombshell video about the truth surrounding Splenda: each packet of this “calorie-free” sweetener actually contains four calories, but Splenda can still market itself as a zero-calorie sweetener thanks to loopholes in FDA regulations.

Splenda advertises itself as a low-calorie sweetener since it doesn’t use table sugar to sweeten your beverage or food. Instead, it utilizes sucralose, an artificial sweetener that contains zero calories and is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. However, Splenda also contains maltodextrin and dextrose (which is another way to say glucose, one of the basic sugars that make up table sugar). That dextrose, according to the video, is what makes up the calories in a packet of Splenda.

While the video does a great job of explaining the science of glucose and sugar and uses a well-cited test for glucose, it doesn’t explain why the dextrose is in Splenda in the first place.

Dextrose and maltodextrin are used as bulking agents in Splenda, since the amount of sucralose needed to sweeten the sugar is extremely small and doesn’t need a packet the size of Splenda’s to fit in. In other artificial sweeteners, including Sweet N Low, Sweet One, and Equal, dextrose is also used as a bulking agent, meaning that all of these artificial “zero-calorie” sweeteners also contain at least a couple of calories per packet.

Even natural zero-calorie sweeteners, like stevia or monkfruit, have some calories. They usually contain erythritol or xylitol, both of which contribute calories per gram in lower amounts than sugar, to help mask some of the off-flavor aftertastes the natural sweeteners may contain. Dextrose can also do the same thing in artificial sweeteners with bitter aftertastes, such as aspartame and saccharin.

While this all sounds scandalous for the alternative sweetener packets we know and love, we have to keep in mind that they are still much lower in calories than sugar packets, which contain 15-24 calories per packet. That’s at least four times the calories in any of the packets above, so at least Equal, Sweet One, Splenda, and the like aren’t as caloric as real sugar.

The next time you use a “zero-calorie” sweetener, however, make sure you add at least a few calories to the total count of your drink per packet.

Chipotle Is Being Sued For Allegedly Faking Burrito Calorie Count


It seems Chipotle is once again facing the anger of its patrons.

MyNewsLA reports that the quick service restaurant company is getting sued yet again. This time, it’s for allegedly lying to customers about their burritos’ calorie content.

After multiple customers took a photo of Chipotle’s store menu, they pointed out something a little peculiar about one of the burritos offered. ScottWeier posted this image on his Twitter.

As you can see, the recently introduced Chorizo burrito boasted only 300 calories. Another Twitter user quickly pointed out there’s no way that was possible. 

Thanks to this display of calorie confusion, three customers are filing a class action lawsuit against Chipotle claiming that they were mislead into believing the burritos were healthier than they actually were.

Grubstreet did the math and ballparked the fast casual restaurant’s chorizo burrito at about 950 calories, more than three times the amount displayed.

A spokesperson for the brand said that the calories were solely meant for the meat itself. Confusing, right?

Sure, it could be argued that the customers should have known better. How could something so large and meaty be so few in calories. However, it’s also a huge error in Chipotle’s end not correctly labeling their item.
