Matthew McConaughey Just Won A Celebrity Burger Showdown, Here’s What He Made

May 28 was a big day for burger lovers.

In celebration of National Burger Day, Off the Menu, the LA-based food discovery app, teamed up with Uber Eats to host The Burger Showdown. The challenge paired more than 60 celebrities including Matthew McConaughey, Paris Hilton, and Dwyane Wade with restaurants in 10 cities to create their ultimate burger, available exclusively on Uber Eats. Even better, the Showdown supported Frontline Foods, a grassroots organization that supports local restaurants while feeding frontline workers and impacted communities..

Each pairing created a video sharing their burger inspiration and recipe, which lived on theburgershowdown.com for fans and burger lovers to watch and vote on their favorite before ordering on Uber Eats from May 28-31.

And, the winners are in:

Best Burger (US):

The Best Burger in the US was awarded to The Jacobite, made by Scottish actor Sam Heughan and Boston’s The Haven. It’s made with a chuck beef patty smothered in bacon-infused marmalade, pickle sauce, arugula, tomatoes, Huntsman cheese, deep fried onions, and a hand-cut french fry wedge served on a milk bun to create a deviously rich burger.

Best Burger (Canada):

The Best Canadian Burger was won by the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner and The Burger’s Priest. The Mitch One-Six Burger kept it simple, with a smashed patty, cheddar cheese, thick cuts of bacon, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, the famed High Priest Sauce, and a classic, soft house bun. Simple, to the point, and dependable.

Most Creative Collaboration:

The winners of the Most Creative Collaboration, Shay Mitchell and NYC’s Flip Sigi, created the Filipino-inspired Shay Sigi Burger, which featured a three-meat burger that bonded longanisa, ground beef, and bacon. Seared on a hot pan, the amalgamation of a patty was topped with pickled onions, tomato, lettuce, a homemade banana ketchup, and a pan de sal bun.

Best Plant-Based Burger:

Max Greenfield and Chicago’s Busy Burger’s collab, the Busy Max Veggie Delight, won the Best Plant-Based Burger presented by Lightlife. Here’s the juicy deets: Two Lightlife Plant-Based Burgers topped with pepper jack cheese and cut with guacamole and sauteed veggies, were topped with butter leaf lettuce, tomato, pickles, and Busy Burger’s signature Busy Sauce.

The Burger Showdown Hall of Fame:

Rounding out the awards by being inducted into The Burger Showdown Hall of Fame is Matthew McConaughey and Aaron Franklin of Austin’s Loro, who created a burger for those who hate when their patty slides out the back (or “slidie-out-backie,” as deemed by Mr. McConaughey) when bitten. Dubbed the “And…” burger, it is made with a brisket and chuck patty and brioche buns, then stacked with double-cut smoked bacon, American cheese, pickled jalapeños, butter leaf lettuce, thin-sliced tomato, mustard, and a jalapeño aioli.

The Burger Showdown was truly something to behold this year. Make sure to peep the builds of all the burgers mentioned, and more here.

Keep an eye on @offthemenu and @ubereats to see what they’re cooking up for their next tasty event, The Wing Showdown.

Beyond Meat’s Burger Patty Priced The Lowest It’s Ever Been: $1.60

As meat prices soar, plant-based patty producer Beyond Meat is making an attempt to appeal to the masses.

The company will be releasing its Cookout Classic 10-pack, a value of their well-known plant-based burgers, which will be for sale in most Targets and Walmarts nationwide for $15.99.

“The new offering will be available through mid-August, or until supplies last, and is intended to narrow the price gap between plant-based meat and animal protein, making delicious, nutritious and sustainable plant-based meat more accessible to more people,” said the company in a statement via email.

The release comes at a time when meat prices are the highest they’ve been since 1974, which the brand hopes will leave typical meat-eating consumers a bit more open to trying plant-based burgers.

“This forward-looking pricing represents an important milestone along our journey to make Beyond Meat more accessible to all consumers,” said CEO Ethan Brown.

According to CNN, a secondary, less consumer centric reason is that the company has an excess amount of the patties, which were destined for restaurants pre-COVID, and hopes to get rid of the stock.

This plan is only a part of the company’s ever-expanding reach, as they’ve recently inked a deal with Yum Brand’s (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell) Chinese storefronts and tested burgers in McDonald’s Canada. A direct-to-consumer website will be released this summer, as well.

Hounded by restaurant shutdowns or not, Beyond Meat appears to be chugging along and trying to turn a negative situation into an opportunity for expansion.

Whatever the reason the Cookout Classic pack exists, for consumers or for the brand, it does. And, it’ll soon be available at a store near most people. For fans of the product, any sign of the company’s (understandably) premium-priced burgers getting a price slash is a good signal of things to come .

Checkers & Rally’s Are Giving Out Free Meals to Healthcare Workers

Known for their “Crazy Good Food,” Checkers & Rally’s have shifted their focus towards crazy good hospitality.

Now, at all 250 locations nationwide, first responders and medical workers can get a free small combo at the fast food chain, solely by showing up in their uniform.

Each combo includes a small order of fries, a small drink, and a choice of one of the following entrees: Big Buford (which may be the best name out there for a fast food item), Cheese Champ, Chili Dog, BBQ Bacon Roadhouse, Half-Pound Chicken Bites, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, Baconzilla, 5-piece Wings, or a Deep Sea Double.

The restaurant’s employees will also benefit from the policy, as they’ve been deemed “essential workers,” and will get a free small meal for every shift they work.

This is in addition to the $100,000 they donated to No Kid Hungry that’s estimated to provide a million meals to children, and certainly shows a commitment to helping the communities that surround each location, which is rare for such a large chain.

Hats off, Checkers & Rally’s.

8 Foodbeast-worthy Restaurants And What To Order In Aspen, CO

Aspen, the stunning mountain town in Colorado, can be quiet at times. This doesn’t mean the restaurant scene cannot boast a formidable roar when it comes to mouthwatering eats.

Java Monster fueled us up as we took a culinary tour through some of the best eats Aspen Colorado had to offer. Whether you’re visiting to get a lung-full of the fresh mountain air or eager to see the world famous Winter X-Games, you have to keep yourself charged. You just have to know where to look.

Check out this list below of MUST-TRY spots in the stunning mountain destination. This list is powered by our earnest recommendations of places that are delicious, in a beautiful backdrop, that won’t break the bank.

Butcher’s Block

There’s nothing that will warm you up like a hearty sandwich, and Butcher’s Block’s famous meatloaf sandwich doesn’t get any heartier in Aspen. It features your choice of bread (I strongly recommend the French Roll) and is loaded with mayo, mustard, lettuce, and tomato. The meatloaf itself combines juicy pork and beef along with a medley of spices coming together to form a unity of flavor in your mouth.

CP Burger

Anyone looking for a bit of casual recreation in the city can stop into CP Burger. The fast-casual burger shop serves up not only mouthwatering gourmet burgers, but also hot dogs, fries, and Spiked Shakes that will warm you up in the middle of winter.
The restaurant also features Aspen’s only outdoor skating rink. When the season heats up, the rink transforms into a mini-golf park. Activities galore!

Home Team BBQ

Home Team is a local spot on Buttermilk Range with a cozy interior and some legit barbecue. The habanero jelly and creamy white Alabama sauce with their wings are a winner. They also fuse together barbecue and brunch or breakfast, with items like a brunch burger, BBQ breakfast burritos and enchiladas, and more on the menu.

Hops Culture

You don’t have to go camping to enjoy s’mores. In fact, Hops Culture bar serves up a tableside s’mores platter that takes the camping experience straight to the bar, letting you enjoy some craft brews all while getting your childhood fix of graham crackers, chocolate, and roasted marshmallows in a casual setting.

Meat & Cheese Restaurant

Rich artisanal cheeses, savory meats, and bread so fresh you can smell it from a block away. Meat & Cheese specializes in a variety of boards, and one of their most popular ones draws its name from the restaurant itself: The Meat and Cheese Platter. Great for small groups to share, once you crush the entire platter, you can walk it off inside the farm shop and peruse through their selection of speciality charcuterie, cheeses, seafood, soups, and sauces.

Paradise Bakery & Cafe

Paradise bakery makes a ton of baked goods, from stuffed croissants to freshly made cookies. If you’re looking for some frozen treats on the mountain, the affogatos are a must! They can be made with any of Paradise’s ice cream flavors, such as birthday cake, acting as a creamy companion for your coffee.

Su Casa Mexican Restaurant

For anyone trying to find shelter from the icy weather, Su Casa Mexican Restaurant specializes in a pretty fiery dish. Called the “Crazy Pig,” this seafood dish is served inside a whimsical pig-shaped molcajete and filled with a red tomatillo sauce, scallops, mussels, cheese, and garnished with fried shrimp. A little latin heat to this chilly hamlet.

The Red Onion

One of the oldest bars and restaurants in Aspen, The Red Onion has been around since 1892. A stunning establishment, the building boasts a gorgeous Victorian aesthetic that’s been gradually updated through the ages.

On the menu you’ll find American classics like the Colorado Burger, as well as The Red Onion’s popular customizable Mac and Cheese. Seriously guys, you can load this plate of mac up with all your favorite meats: bacon, shrimp, or even pulled pork and top them with roasted jalapenos.

According to owner Brad Smith, The Red Onion serves more Coors Banquet than any other single outlet in the country.

Trader Joe’s Officially Launches Their Take On Plant-Based ‘Bleeding’ Burgers

While Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have long dominated the plant-based burger space, several other vegan patties have surfaced over the past year. To kick off 2020, Trader Joe’s has decided to throw its hat into the ring with its own, in-house rendition on the plant meat that can cook to “medium rare.”

Initially leaked in September 2019, Trader Joe’s has officially sent out a release that confirms the nationwide rollout of their meat-free burger patties. The “Protein Patties,” as they’re called, are made similar to Beyond Meat’s, with a base of pea protein, sunflower oil, and beet powder that allows the burgers to look pink and juicy in the middle when fully cooked.

Each 8-ounce package of the patties costs $4.49, putting it on par with Beyond Meat, Impossible, and other refrigerated plant-based meats currently in grocers. While that’s still a hefty price compared to the current cost of ground beef, given all of the new entrants into the market in the past year, it should only be a matter of time before the price of plant-based meat drops below that of regular meat.

The Protein Patties began their release across the nation on January 20th, so if they’re not at your local Trader Joe’s store yet, you should expect to see them soon.

Arby’s Begins Testing Brunch Sandwiches At Select Stores

Photo: Arby’s

Arby’s has always been my go-to fast food chain when I just want to indulge my palette on some meaty vices. Between their brisket and roast beef, I’m usually down to sink my teeth into some meaty sandos whenever the craving surfaces. Never once did I consider that Arby’s would offer something to help with my more frequent breakfast cravings, however.

Chewboom revealed the addition of two new fast food Brunch Burgers: The Bacon, Ham & Egg Brunch Sandwich and The Brisket, Avocado & Egg Brunch Sandwich.

Ham, freshly cracked egg, cinnamon-sugar bacon, a potato cake and French Toast sauce rounds out the ingredients of The Bacon, Ham & Egg Brunch Sandwich. The Brisket, Avocado & Egg Brunch Sandwich boasts egg, potato cake, cheese, and an avocado spread.

Chewboom reports that the sandwiches are currently being tested at select Arby’s locations in Ohio. Hopefully these massive brunch beauties get a national release. Good lord.
