Taco Bell’s Newest Secret Menu Hack Is a Tie Dye Freeze

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Elie (@bookofelie) on

In terms of secret menus, not many hold a candle to Taco Bell. The chain is famous for encouraging people to customize their menu items in any which way, occasionally creating an entirely new menu item, the newest of which is called the Tie-Dye Freeze.

The restaurant recently introduced the Pineapple Whip freeze, adding onto the line up with their current flavors of Baja Blast and Wild Strawberry. It was only a matter of time before someone got the impulse to mix them.

Luckily, we’re talking about one of the few restaurants that takes no issue with that idea. This hack is confirmed to be a go. Just ask for the Tie-Dye Freeze at the drive-thru, and pick your flavors.

The result will be a colorful, layered slush drink that hits all the marks: sweet, tangy, cool — all while sporting an IG-worthy aesthetic.

The new freeze will be available for purchase when the Pineapple Whip flavor gets put in nationwide rotation, on May 21, just in time for summer. And, let’s be honest, there’s no time for a Taco Bell freeze like a hot summer afternoon.

So stay sharp, and make sure to remember this secret menu hack the next time you pull up to Taco Bell.

REJOICE: Bottles Of Mtn Dew BAJA BLAST and SANGRITA BLAST Will Be Available Soon

Starting April 20th, bottles of the popular Taco Bell-branded Mtn Dew Baja Blast will be available for sale once again.

Last year’s hype surrounding the availability of the Taco Bell Dews in bottle form drove roughly 1.2 million tweets and had their limited supply sell out in 8 weeks. No word yet on what retail locations will carry the bottles, but if you’re impatient, both flavors will be readily available from the fountain machines at your local Taco Bells.

For those unfamiliar with the flavors, here’s a quick flavor profile for each:

BAJA BLAST: A tropical lime storm.

SANGRITA BLAST: Mountain Dew w/ a citrus punch.

The 6 Most Powerful Food Stories of 2014

The following 6 stories don’t define or tell a story about the food scene. They don’t help convey any particular trend. When it comes to the highest trafficking articles on, we can glean that people love Trader Joe’s and Disneyland, people are super inquisitive about McDonald’s products, and we can surmise that a very curious amount of people care that the once Taco Bell-exclusive Mtn Dew Baja Blast is now being bottled for our guzzling pleasure.

5 Important Baja Blast Cocktail Recipes for Cinco De Mayo

It’s Cinco de Mayo, folks, which means — you know, besides all the Battle of Puebla celebrations —that Mountain Dew’s Baja Blast is finally available in stores. For a limited time, the formerly Taco Bell-exclusive flavor will soon be popping up at your local groceries and vending machines and maybe even a few backyard summer barbecues (loaded with all the necessary booze of course).

To celebrate, we’ve whipped up a few Baja Blast-inspired cocktail recipes for you to enjoy without ever having to step foot inside a Taco Bell. Sweeter than Sprite and significantly cooler-looking, Mountain Dew’s blue Listerine-colored concoction is the perfect upgrade to everything from margaritas to jello shots. What a time to be alive.

Baja Blast Shandy

1 part light beer
3 parts Baja Blast

Mix with ice. Squirt in a bit of lime juice for an extra tart kick.

Baja Blast Skinny Margarita

2 teaspoons lime juice (approx. 1 lime)
1/2 teaspoon powdered lemonade
1 ounce tequila
5 ounces Baja Blast

Sweet and zippy, this skinny Baja margarita is our favorite of the bunch. Mix all ingredients together with ice, salt the rim with some kosher salt and enjoy poolside. It’s only right.

Baja Blast Bruiser

1 1/2 ounces gin (we used Seagram’s Lime Twisted)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon lime juice
5 ounces Baja Blast
1 splash grenadine

Mix together the BB, gin, juices, and grenadine for a citrus-y Shirley Temple, or enjoy layered, because it just looks cooler that way.

Baja Blast Santo Libre

5 ounces Baja Blast
2 ounces rum
1/4 ounce lime juice
Optional: mint leaves for garnish

Technically a drink from the Dominican Republic, but every bit as summery as the rest of the list. Try with white rum for a cleaner drink or a dark spiced rum for a livelier/sweeter burn.

Baja Blast Margarita Jello Shots

Makes 10 – 12
2/3 packet lime gelatin
1 cup water
4 ounces triple sec
4 ounces tequila
4 ounces Baja Blast
5 – 6 limes

Yas Spring Break. Where many jello shot recipes can be a little bitter, the soda here keeps everything light and sweet. Boil water, add gelatin until dissolved, then remove from heat and add alcohol and soda. When ready, cut limes in half lengthwise and scoop out citrus flesh. Pour gelatin mixture into emptied lime halves and place in fridge for 4 hours, or until set. Finally, cut halves into separate wedges and sprinkle with salt.

Be warned though, scooping the lime flesh can be a little time-consuming, so try freezing limes beforehand and using a good paring knife or grapefruit spoon.

Watch Us Throw a Piñata Stuffed with Bottled Mtn Dew Baja Blast Off the Roof of Our Building

Back in March, we announced that Taco Bell’s 10-year monopoly of Mtn Dew’s Baja Blast was ending. The lime-flavored beverage will be available for a limited-time this summer in 20 oz plastic bottles, 24 oz cans and 12-packs of 12 oz cans.

In anticipation of their retail launch on May 5, Taco Bell mailed us a bottle of the blue-green cult soda… stuffed into a piñata. Naturally, our curiosity was piqued. Since it was Friday and happy hour officially started at 11 am at our office, we decided to find out what would happen if we threw a piñata with Mtn Dew Baja Blast innards off our building’s roof.

For the sake of science, of course.

Here’s what happened:

7 Silly Things We Just Learned About Taco Bell, Straight from their President

Taco Bell’s president, Mr. Brian Niccol, took to Reddit’s popular AMA section late this morning to usher in the launch of the chain’s biggest addition in company history: a breakfast menu.

While Taco Bell breakfast discussions were interesting, it was Niccol’s cheeky responses to questions surrounding things like the bottling of their popular Mountain Dew Baja Blast drinks, and his thoughts on Justin Bieber that will make this AMA a memorable one. We’ve picked the 7 greatest moments and featured them below:

1. Brian Niccol’s dream would be to add Beer to the menu

2. This is a poorly made Waffle Taco, and someone may or may not get fired for it:

3. When is Taco Bell breakfast coming to Canada? …as soon as they take Justin Bieber back

4. Sales in Colorado have increased 420% since the legalization of marijuana (har har)

5. Your beloved and illustrious ‘Bell Beefer’ is not coming back to the menu any time soon

Bottled Mtn Dew Baja Blast Finally Coming to Stores, Vending Machines May 2014

It’s official guys: Taco Bell’s ten-year monopoly over Mtn Dew’s Baja Blast is finally over. Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead!

According to newly-leaked images from Instagram and Tumblr, the long-awaited bottled version of the cult-favorite, lime-flavored, blue-green soda will be available in stores starting May 2014. An Instagram photo by user ashlynavskum was uploaded last weekend revealing a refrigerator promotion for the upcoming release. This follows the recent roll-out of four brand new drinks, the Manzanita Sol, SoBe Lifewater Yumberry Pomegranate, Brisk Mango iced tea, and Brisk Half and Half, plus the Taco Bell-exclusive Mtn Dew Sangrita Blast and Diet Baja Blast, in January.

Mountain Dew has yet to make an official statement regarding the leaked images, but comments on a recent IGN forum suggest the PepsiCo order forms have already been sent out to vendors.

Can’t wait ’til May and can’t stand Taco Bell? Pro-tip: just mix regular Mtn Dew and blue Powerade. Y’all are welcome.
