Top 6 Food News Stories of the Week [VIDEO]

The middle of June is bustling with big name brands making some crazy headlines in the food world.

This past week, Burger King made headlines when an employee leaked some training documents revealing the official rollout of their bacon sundae and other summer BBQ items, including a Pulled Pork Whopper. Also buzzworthy this week, rocker Dave Grohl was mighty generous during Memorial Day Weekend — reportedly leaving a $1000 tip for his bartender after drinking one drink at a bar out in Philly. Then he did it again the next night — what a nice dude!

Starbucks, Subway and Taco Bell also topped the food news charts this past week with major menu additions and big time acquisitions.

Burger King’s Summer Menu Might Include a Pulled Pork Sandwich and Sweet Potato Fries

With summer just a few days away, fast food brands will begin making the transition to their summer-friendly menu items, and Burger King is no exception.

We just received a tip from a Burger King employee noting that the chain is training their staff to handle a new summer menu that includes an apparent wider release of the Bacon Sundae, a couple flavors of Frozen Lemonades, a range of new BBQ-inspired sandwiches and the addition of Sweet Potato Fries.

The menu will be available as a promotion for three months, according to our source. No telling what items will stay on the menu following the three-month course, and no confirmation, yet, if this is a nationwide menu or just limited to a few locations.

Some notable additions come in the form of a Carolina BBQ Whopper and the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. The Carolina BBQ Whopper features a ‘creamy coleslaw sauce,’ lettuce, tomato, red onion, Sweet Carolina BBQ sauce, thick-cut bacon and Pepper Jack cheese. The Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich features the same ‘creamy coleslaw sauce,’ white onion, Smoky Sweet Memphis BBQ Sauce all over pulled pork.

Here is a closer look at the rest of the menu items:

Burger King Testing a New Bacon Sundae, Because This is America

From the looks of it, a Nashville, TN Burger King location has some pretty sweet regional menu offerings. Amidst a report of Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches, Frozen Lemonades, and Sweet Potato Fries, the location seems to be testing something even more intriguing — a new Bacon Sundae.

The bacon fad is a hot calling card for brands as of late. Denny’s did it before them, Jack in the Box had a bacon milkshake, but from the looks of this spotting out in Nashville, this dessert does something Jack didn’t dare do in his take on bacon desserts — Burger King actually uses bacon.

While no actual shots of the dessert have surfaced, this lawn-sign of BK’s Bacon Sundae shows a mound of what we assume is vanilla soft serve, drizzled in what looks to be chocolate and possibly caramel sauce, bits of bacon sprinkled on top, and a strip of bacon for garnish.

No telling what the actual thing will look or taste like just yet, but for now, at least we know it’s real. Somewhere.
