Creamy Garlic Caesar, Grilled Cheese & Ketchup, Maple Moose and Perogy Platter are Lay’s Canada’s ‘Do Us a Flavour’ Finalists

canadalays

I’ve got to admit Canada, I’m a little disappointed in you. Where else am I supposed to get poutine-flavo[u]red potato chips if not up north, huh?

Frito Lay Canada has just entered the final stages of its Lay’s “Do Us a Flavour” contest, which, similarly to ours, allowed fans to propose new Lay’s potato chip flavors for the chance to be made into the brand’s newest official flavor. Except for some reason Canada gets four instead of three (wtf, USA?) and theirs just sound cooler.

The salad inspired-Creamy Garlic Caesar, the after school snack-reminiscent Grilled Cheese & Ketchup, the super Canadian-sounding, maple syrup flavored-Maple Moose and the Polish dumpling-inspired Perogy Platter are all currently in the running to win their inventors $50,000 and 1% of the flavors’ sales, starting now.

The press-release, via Potato Pro, describes the flavors as follows:

Creamy Garlic Caesar:

British Columbia’s Jill Munro was thinking of Caesar – the king of salads, topped with tasty parmesan and croutons while dreaming up her flavour. For Canadians who like their salad with a crunch, Creamy Garlic Caesar is your candidate

Grilled Cheese & Ketchup:

Who doesn’t cherish the memory of coming home from school for lunch and enjoying a grilled cheese sandwich with ketchup for dipping, made by mom? Ontario’s own Angela Batley used this as her inspiration for what she hopes will be the next great Lay’s flavour. For everyone who believes in creamy cheddar grilled cheese and tangy ketchup – vote Grilled Cheese & Ketchup today.

Maple Moose:

Newfoundlander Tyler LeFrense only needed to look around his hometown of Isle Aux Morts to draw his iconic inspiration. For Canadians who agree that maple syrup makes everything taste better, Maple Moose is the flavour to rally behind.

Perogy Platter:

Alberta’s Lucas Crawford can’t get enough of the perogy platter served at his favourite hometown diner. This was the spark for a brilliant chip flavour idea – one that would allow Lucas to enjoy this delight, with sweet onions and smoky bacon anytime, anywhere in chip format. For those who believe in hometown deliciousness, get behind the Perogy Platter candidate!”

The contest will run until October, which gives us Americans about three months to road-trip to Canada to fail to track them all down (because goodness knows how hard it was just to find our own flavors down here). Who’s with me?

America’s varieties were far better at actually replicating the advertised flavour I’d say. Though, Chicken N’ Waffles just taste of syrup to me, so I just stacked one CNW chip with a Roast Chicken chip (also made by Lay’s, not sure if they are sold in America though) which produced far better results.

Yeah and they all suck. Out of all the flavors submitted, that’s what they ended up with. Totally gross.

*side note* – I’d definitely hit the pierogi chips (even though they can’t spell it).

Caesar is actually pretty damn spot on (best flavour of the bunch by a long shot). Grilled Cheese & Ketchup and Perogy Platter are good, but not great (Grilled Cheese are a less ketchupy slightly cheesy version of Lay’s Ketchup, and PP just taste like Sour Cream & Onion with a slight pierogi flavour) and Maple Moose are absolutely vile. It just tastes of burnt, nothing more. Smells just as bad.

Ugh, yeah, the maple stuff sounds pretty disgusting. I tasted the fried chicken & waffles and that’s pretty disgusting as well.

Maple moose is beyond disgusting! The packaging is so misleading. I thought it was going to taste like maple. Dunno what the moose was there for until I had a bite.

Simulated Maple has always made any food item taste horrible and the most foul flavours to play with these nasty flavours are usually chip manufacturers. I say we boycott Lays for a year just for putting this one abomination on the shelves of Canadian stores. If I could imagine what Moose SHAT and used motor oil tasted like, it wouldn’t even come close to Maple Moose Potato chips. Whoever approved this flavour for release to the general public should be handed their pink slip now. They left out the maple and just kept the rotting moose road kill. Tyler…Dude, Lays lost this contest for you before it even began with this one

I had initially picked up Maple Moose to try until I saw it contained sucralose (Splenda) — I do not want to eat chips that contain artificial sweeteners!! Grilled Cheese and Ketchup is really gross, it tastes like cheesy ketchup chips but in a bad way. Perogy Platter is not that great either, it just tastes like smokey bacon chips with a very strong onion aftertaste. Onion so strong that mouthwash can’t even get rid of. YUCK. I still have a bag of Creamy Garlic Caesar I have yet to try, and I am already bracing myself. Overall, I am very disappointed in Lays for choosing these 4 flavours as finalists.

tried all four and not one was all that appealing to me. if i HAD to choose, i would probably pick the grilled cheese one but for the time being, i’ll stick to plain potato chips for my next purchase!

I tried all of them except for the maple one, and they where all disgusting ESPECIALLY the Ceasar Salad ( which is one of my favourite foods in the world…The salad that is) the most tolerable one i would say would have to be the grilled cheese one, but its definitely not in anyway good, terrible, terrible flavours…SHAME!
