German Soccer Club Borussia Dortmund Brings German-inspired Food Truck To LA

The most popular sport in the world is, undoubtedly, football. No, not American football – but the beautiful game of what you might know as soccer. To honor the pastime of our generation and of generations before us, we’re bringing together the perfect match of food and football.

Every summer, we get to witness prestigious football clubs from around the world play this beautiful game against our U.S. based clubs. But this time, we’re bringing you an even more indulgent way to honor the game.

To pay tribute to German football club Borussia Dortmund (BVB for short) and it’s upcoming friendly match on May 22nd with the new Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Football Club, we’ve partnered with PUMA to create a limited time BVB Food Truck.

This food truck features a full menu inspired by German street food. With some help from our friends and popular Los Angeles food truck, The Berlin Truck, we’ll give you a taste of everything from spiced currywurst to crispy schnitzel.

The collab with Borussia Dortmund and PUMA will run for one week. Some of the unique items you can get your hands on include:

The BVB Burrito: filled with sauerkraut, fries, curry ketchup, cheese, and bratwurst sausage.

The BVB Grilled Cheese: Made on sourdough bread with Swiss cheese, and filled with chopped bratwurst, fries, curry ketchup, and sauerkraut.

Curry Chicken Grilled Cheese: Curry chicken with melted swiss cheese between sourdough bread.

Schnitzel Sandwich: Made with a massive fried chicken breast, mayo, deli mustard, and sauerkraut, served inside of a pretzel bun.

Curry Cheese Fries: Crispy fries topped with cheddar sauce and curry ketchup.

Bratwurst Dog: A bratwurst sausage topped with grilled onions, homemade sauerkraut, and mustard, served in a German roll. Also available with currywurst sausage or tofu kielbasa.

These loaded German street eats will be available on the BVB Truck through May 23rd at all of its scheduled stops, including the big game between BVB and LAFC. Below is a list of where and when you can find the truck:

Shawarma Egg Rolls Are A Real Thing And Here’s The Recipe

If you don’t know what Shawarma is then you’re missing out on one of the most important Middle Eastern dishes you’ve never had. Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish comprised of either lamb, chicken, or beef that is prepared on a vertical rotating spit. A typical beef shawarma sandwich is served in a pita with gherkin pickles, turnips, parsley mix and a drizzle of tahini.

I’ve always been inspired by my Lebanese heritage and cuisine, considering that it was what I grew up with. So when Canada’s bad boy Josh Elkin came through the office this week, we grabbed some shawarma sandwiches in Little Arabia, located in the always sunny Southern California. As we were coming up with ideas for some new recipe videos, the thought of rolling up an entire shawarma sandwich inside an egg roll came to mind. Having an Asian girlfriend was my inspiration, but Josh had the know-how to make it possible.

On our way to the store we wisely consulted my Lebanese mother on how to get the the shawarma recipe just right. Although we don’t have a vertical spit for our shawarma, there’s still a way to to make our dreams come true using an oven and the right spices. Here’s the recipe below and check out the video for a detailed visual look.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 deep fryer or large pot
  • 1 basting brush
  • 3 liters of cooking oil
  • Egg Roll Wrappers
  • 1 plastic bag
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 pound of thin sliced flank steak
  • 1 cup of sliced pickled turnips
  • 1 cup of chopped gherkins
  • 1 cup of tahini paste
  • Salt and pepper
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1/3 cup of red vinegar
  • 1 lemon sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of shawarma spice
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 5 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 largely sliced onion with pedals separated
  • 1 cup of finely chopped parsley
  • ½ cup of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of sumac spice

Preheat the cooking oil to 375 degrees F.

Step 1

Slice the flank steak into small bits and add it to a plastic bag. Add the red vinegar, olive oil, minced garlic, onions, shawarma seasoning, lemon juice, and lemons and mix well. Put this in the fridge for about 2 hours (overnight is better).

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Step 2

Add the contents of the bag to a baking tray and cook for about 20 minutes or until the onions become wilted.

Step 3

Combine the parsley lemon juice and sumac in a small bowl and mix well.

Lay out one egg roll wrapper. Paint the perimeter of the egg roll wrapper with the beaten egg.

Step 4

Lay out some turnips in the center of the egg roll wrapper. Add the sliced pickles and some of the parsley mixture. Top it off with a few strips of the shawarma beef.

Step 5

Roll the wrapper from one corner to the next. Pull it back to create a cylinder.

Step 6

Fold in the two side corners of the wrapper over the cylinder and roll it up closed.

Place the egg roll into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and bubbly.

Step 7

Combine the tahini paste with water and 1 teaspoon of salt and mix until the tahini becomes a light, beige color. Season with more salt to desired taste.

Celebrity Grub: Bruce Willis Feeds Letterman His Meat Hair

Bruce Willis is no longer bald! This Die Hard playa is able to grow a nice set of ground beef on his head, and just in time for the fall to keep him warm. You have to give it up for B.Willis for his Gaga-ness and his sense of humor. The man is straight up gangster, ’nuff said. While on David Letterman’s Tonight Show, Willis offered Letterman a piece of his meat (???) which pretty much leads to Letterman choking on it (???). I’m not trying to sound filthy, but it’s just writing itself. Enjoy.

Camel On A Stick!

My hungry cousins in Minnesota seem to have found one crazy ingredient to the whole food-on-a-stick phenomenon. This time it’s camel, I doubt Camel Joe is happy about it, but hey, we hear it tastes like buffalo. Check out this video I found of some ballsy FoodBeasts trying some camel. I hate to be anti-foodbeast, but it really looks like a piece of turd to me. Eat on!

Video: Sinkhole Swallows Sonic

It seems as if the Earth is just as hungry as anyone with an appetite as it swallowed a Sonic Burger Restaurant on Saturday. Due to some rain and rusty pipes, a sinkhole opened up in this tiny town of Cleveland, Ga. to swallow their entire Sonic Drive-In. Sonic manager Tammy Moore estimates the sinkhole measures to about 200 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet deep. The other bad news is that the employees are out of the job. Although they have been offered transfer positions, the only other Sonic Drive-In is two hours away in Tennessee and none of the staff will make the move since it’s so far away. Poor Sonic Georgia. I might have to grab some grub from there today just for some support.
