McDonald’s Is No Longer Welcome at a Growing Number of Hospitals

It might seem counterintuitive that a fast-food restaurant infamous for being unhealthy would be located inside a hospital in the first place. Because hospitals are, you know, where sick people go to get better, not to get sicker. Nevertheless, the McDonald’s at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City enjoyed two-years at the hospital before CEO John Bluford told the Salt (the name of NPR’s food blog, not a commentary on McDonald’s favorite ingredient) that the presence of McDonald’s was sending an “inconsistent message” and that it was being removed. Well…yeah.

However, it’s not entirely as simple as it seems — fast food chains within certain hospitals generate revenue for the establishments that can be put to good use, and there’s certainly an understandable demand for comfort food within these spaces (some of the chain fast-food restaurants were brought in as special treats for sick children.) Regardless, it seems that Truman Medical Center is part of a growing trend of hospitals who are deciding its not worth it—including Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

Spend $66 on Domino’s New ‘Luxury’ Kobe Beef Steak Pizza in Japan

If you’re in Japan, you can blow 5,800 yen ($66) on the recently released Kobe Beef Steak Pizza. Topped with Kobe beef, onions, potatos, cheese, and deluxe steak sauce, the question remains as to whether or not anything that involves the expensive and succulent meat can really go wrong (sorry, vegetarians). Then again, this is Domino’s, king of junk pizza, so RocketNews24 decided to break the bank and try it for the rest of us. Here’s what they deduced:

“The beef here really is sublime! From the first bite, the pure tastiness of the ingredients sets off a chain reaction inside the cerebral cavity. Before you know it, you find yourself entering into a state of pizza ecstasy.”

On a negative note, with the beef being the focal point of the pizza- and let’s admit it, the meat is what will be impacting on your taste buds the most – it actually detracts a little from the traditional notion of what makes a good pizza.”

In conclusion: If you’re in the area and feel like trying something different, get some friends together and splurge on this luxury concoction. However, if it’s traditional pizza that you’re after, better luck somewhere else.

Apparently, Science Says Hot Chocolate Tastes Better in an Orange Cup

hot chocolate orange

Next time you’re pouring hot chocolate, reach for an orange mug. Research by scientists at Oxford University and the Polytechnic University of Valencia has demonstrated that hot chocolate in an orange or crème colored cup tastes better than the same beverage served in a white or red cup. The brain’s perception changes due to the characteristics associated with that color—the crème cups, for instance, had participants claiming the hot chocolate was sweeter and more aromatic, despite actually being the same variety served in the other colors.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of color impacting our perception of how food tastes. The same team has conducted similar experiments which have deduced that strawberry mousse tastes sweeter on white plates than black ones, soda tastes more refreshing in blue cans than pink ones, and coffee tastes strongest when served in brown packaging.

So what are the implications of our less-than-discerning taste buds? Betina Piqueras-Fiszman, one of the authors of the study, states that “companies should pay more attention to the container because it has a lot more potential than what you imagine.”

Drink Like A King: Game of Thrones ‘Iron Throne Blonde Ale’

On March 31st, HBO and partner Brewery Ommegang will be releasing Iron Throne Blonde Ale, the first of four Game of Thrones-themed beers. According to the brewery’s website, “The collaboration between Ommegang and HBO is focused on developing unique beers that are named and crafted to directly tie into themes and nuances of the medieval-like fantasy realm of Westeros and the surrounding kingdoms, where the competition to sit on the Iron Throne is fierce and deadly.” We’re hoping this translates into a delicious Belgian-style beer, because we can’t think of a more appropriate beverage with which to enjoy this drinking game. The brew will be available on tap and at a suggested retail price of $8.50 per bottle.

This is not the first time HBO has created an accompanying drink for a series, previously releasing the blood-orange flavored Tru Blood for True Blood.

The catch? The 5,000 units in existence planned for release only in Japan and are most likely all sold out by the time you’re reading this. Hopefully, they’ll be circulating eBay soon enough. Insert obligatory rant about Japan’s monopoly on cool and geeky products.
