Newsflash: Sugar is bad for you. In case you didn’t catch it the first time, here it is again: Sugar is bad for you, as in awful, terrible stuff. For those of you not yet sick of hearing it, I’ll say it one more time: Sugar is bad, bad, bad.

Phew, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s consider this particularly eye-opening, unforgiving infographic by The piece outlines the spectacular amount of sugar Americans consume, how much sugar our favorite foods contain and what health problems — from obesity to depression — can arise from eating too much “refined sugar.” The last section even suggests that based on the way it affects the brain, sugar can be just as addicting as cocaine.

Thus, while even good ol’ Bloomberg can be a bore after awhile, the infographic does drive home an important fact: Too much of anything is rarely a good thing.

Like it or not, anti-sugar fascism poster, but calories are actually THE most important nutrient, and sugar does, in fact, contain them and is therefore NOT without nutritive value.

That is silly. Calorie does not equal nutrient at ALL. A calorie is simply the approximate amount of energy that is required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree; that is all. Nutrients, on the other hand, are those units (generally called vitamins and minerals) that FEED your body and allow the sub-cellular structures in it to maintain and remain healthy. Perhaps you could refer to discussions about “empty calories” (sugar is one) to learn more about this.

OK – it MAY be necessary to put sugar in sodas – but much of the food we eat has sugar in it that could be left out – and the comsumer could add it if he/she wants to.

It’s just like all the salt that is in things like soup: LEAVE IT OUT! If I want to, I can EASILY add it and salt-to-taste.

Soda is so stupid. I can enjoy it from time to time, but I have a hard time understanding why people are as attached to it as they are. I haven’t actually paid for soda (unless it like was offered in a meal) for years.

So the deal is that much of America (including people I love and cherish) have eaten huge quantities of sugar all their lives and no longer have a TASTE for anything that’s not sweet. Don’t like the taste, they say. Why? You ask. And the answer always is 1) it’s not sweet enough or 2) it’s not salty enough. Addiction.

I’m a little confused by one part–3 lbs a week or 130 lbs a year is a LOT more than 3550 lbs in a lifetime–it should be more like 10,000 lbs with the average life span of 79 years.
